Ilahi Sufi Qawwali sing Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's epic kalam Haq Ali Ali.
It’s hard to find the words to express how proud and awestruck I am of these women.
After two full years of hardcore dedication and commitment, I can now listen to Ilahi and genuinely say that women are now carrying the classical Sufi Qawwali tradition for the first time in known history.
Not just the poetry or the music, but that true Qawwali spirit, which 25 years ago moved me to devote my life to it.
The spirit of unity, brave creativity, passion, reverence, devotion and community, expressed in astounding harmony.
A harmony that, in my opinion, is rare to feel between two people - let alone 13 of such diversity!
This piece Haq Ali Ali, created by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, has always touched me profoundly; such a rich composition that travels through many chapters poetically as well as musically.
To have heard it and been taught it by some of the greatest Qawwals of Pakistan, it feels deeply purposeful to pass it on to these devoted students.
As Hazrat Ali (ra) said “ The duty that comes with knowledge is to share it “
Despite the obvious criticism I’ve received in regards to teaching Qawwali to women, I’ve sincerely wanted to know what doaba Qawwali would sound like sung by women, now I’m happy to say it sounds awesome!
That said, we are barely touching the surface of this immense tradition…
And now that international touring is again possible, I prepare to lead Fanna-Fi-Allah once again with Qawwali tours throughout Europe, America, Australia and India.S
o tell me, would you like ilahi to continue?
Is the Qawwali loving world truly ready for this?

Originally sung by Amir Khusrau himself. He also created the genre of qawwali over seven centuries ago. ‘Qawwali’ is from the word ‘qawl’ which refers to the repeated refrain of one phrase throughout the rendering. The original phrase in the very first ever qawwali was ‘Man Kuntu Maula’

I have been studying with Tahir Qawwal for almost 2 years now... How can I even dare to behold and wrap into words and letters what is the true meaning of Qawwali tradition for me. I find it in every verse of every song and in the essence of every rag. Since 2 years my heart is unfurling deeper into the art of sound and into the feeling of immense gratitude for Tahir and Amie for their teachings. I feel honoured and blessed. Singing in this ensemble is a multi-layered experience for me. It’s about connection to women, devotion for the sacred sound, diligence, honouring the teacher and the bridge from my heart to Creator.   Tahir Qawwal, Alexandra Amie Parvati, sisters. You are gems to me to the tradition and to those who can listen with their hearts. I love you!

Qawwali teachings stem from the love of Allah and is messenger (pbuh). Thats the whole point of the music, not the music in itself! Become muslim in totality, submit yourselves to the Shariah and Sunnah of the messenger, sand experience the true taste of faith, or as it is known Marifah of Allah, which all the great sufis strive for!

I just wish they covered themselves properly. Allah ordered the believing women to wear a hijab. Following Ali (A.S), is following Muhammad (S.A.W), and following Muhammad (S.A.W) is following Allah. These ladies frankly showed no respect to the name of Ali (A.S), who holds the title of Maula e Kainaat. Absolutely shameful in my honest opinion.

Sufi and Alavi movements of Islam are very open minded, tolerant, modern, spiritual and promoting the equality and knowledge. Those movements have more affection with secularism and absolutely non with radicalism/fanaticism. Sufism started in the regions where predominantly Azerbaijani but also Farsi people were living. Alavi started in Anatolia where predominantly Turkic but also Syriac people were living.
