While typically, I would agree when you buy the pre-built bookcases, you have those grooves that you can adjust the bookshelves in with the pegs to whatever height you want which she could make herself would that be drilling at least 100 little holes and then buying me shelf holder separately
@@violetscreaming Unironically, not really. In my area the Billy bookcase is 70 dollars, which is about the cost of 2 sheets of the absolute shittiest particle board I can find for retail. And if you're going to use that, might as well buy the Billy. For nicer sheet goods, the Billy is cheaper. Not to mention the time that it would take to make the bookcases, if that matters to you. But I do think that paying extra for nicer quality materials and building it yourself would result in a nicer product.
@@MattMcConaha ahhh interesting to know. IKEA is quite expensive in Australia and I’m incredibly lucky to have a friend that works for a massive timber company so quite a lot of our wood falls off the back of a truck. Hadn’t really taken all of that into consideration
We're the billy bookcases even needed? You built the sides, the base, the top, reinforced the back, even put trim on the front of the shelves, and filled in the shelves adjustment holes? Looks like it created more work.
It makes it look more like a built in than shelving units pushed up against the wall. AND the original backs are almost cardboard😢!!! Looks great but I wonder about the cost difference between starting with IKEA and totally from scratch🤔!!!

It looks amazing! But I will never understand why this trend of woodworking and intensive crafting is called a “hack”. A hack is an easy trick, something to make life easier. Something anyone can do and use to make something more simple. But building your own bookshelves like this is not for everyone, is not an easy trick. It’s a beautiful project made by someone handy and determined! But not a hack, in my opinion. 😂
Why bother paying for the IKEA bookcase when you are only using the shelves from it, which are the easiest part to create and the most affordable option. lol not to mention flying people in to help you.
This is really cool- only problem is the shelves start bowing after a while. You can replace them for $15 but it looks like it would be hard to do that with these

It seems with all that you did you could’ve bought some ply wood and a few more 2x4’s etc and made solid wood furniture instead of using the particle board shelving. You even admit to needing to put better backing on the shelving. It looks very nice. Just too bad all that work, and it’s mostly particle board.
Some other people mentioned not to use the IKEA but to start from scratch. I've never been to an IKEA, so I'm wondering about the cost difference. The end result looks Great❤!!!
I mean, what's the point to even use ikea products now ? Ikea hacks should be easy and cost effective, here for aprox the same cost it can be built from scratch... I don't get it xD It looks very good. But... Yeah.
For all these asking why using Billy-bookcases. Guess they owned these already. So, why buying expensive wood, if you already own bookcases you would throw away if you dont reuse them? Most Bookaddicts already own several bookcases.
Why buy the IKEA book shelves when 75% of the thing has to be added by home Depot lumber??? Just build them yourself. Those shelves are garbage particle board shit
So, you waste money on buying the bookcase, then essentially do custom builtins. Should have just built them from scratch- you essentially did this anyways. MDF is a fail- absolute fail. The work you did does look wonderful.
Are the bookcases made of real wood or will the shelves begin to bow/sag overtime? Ive had many bookcases made of particle board and they always sag...thats why Im building them from real wood in the future. Not even wasting my money on that fake stuff

besides that it does look like a million dollars, and i suffer from super bookwall-envy... then yeah, i don't have a dad or outdoor powertools hahaha so yeah i will just live with my billy book shelves as is. haahah
This is so ridiculous. The intro really sucked. Why not build a real bookcase? That would have been so much easier and of higher quality than trying to retrofit particle board into something that is attempting to look like high end.
Love it! Great job and definitely a shortcut in spite of what other people might claim that they would just start from scratch. No doubt Ikea kits make it a lot easier to put something together and just embellish it. Love it. Oh I guess I started with that. LOL
I don't get it, they build a bookcase around the bookcase, I don't consider this a hack. When I think hack I think something that adds rigidity and style without breaking the bank... they broke the bank in this video with all that lumber.
Looked very nice however, you may want to move the rod to the top of the bookshelf unless you don't plan on using the top row. Or only putting things that fit under the rod.
I have to agree with some of commenters, you clearly have the skills , so it would have been better to just complete the job from scratch without the need for ikea .
Is the base just for looks or would they not be able to just sit on the floor? Also, was the support in between each of the book cases for looks or is there a structural issue with them just being side by side? Thank you. Very pretty ❤
