I worked as a long-haul driver a few years ago; went to 43 states from coast to coast & nothing was more awesome to see than this giant freshwater ocean...
@Biggest Richard Cranium 😇 That sounds Amazing 😇 So Far Lake Ontario is my Favorite Lake. I hope to see Huron and Superior someday. I've sat and stared many times across the Lake at the Space Needle Buildings in Toronto. Only time I've been to Canada was on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. Thank you for the information Richard.
I used to sail on the M.V. Comeaudoc. A flat deck grain and iron ore carrier. She was almost 30 years old with riveted construction. In storms she used to bend and twist easily seen from the porthole of my cabin. She weathered well, even with waves breaking over her wheelhouse. Never underestimate Superior storms. Many wrecks lie on the bottom of Lake Superior. Most famous being the Edmond Fitzgerald.
I live here, there is really nothing like it!!!! It's just stunning!!!!! Up- North is just🌲🌲🌲... breathtaking!!!! The Mackinaw Bridge, THE pictured Rock's. The Grand Hotel. So many things to see....
That must have been quite the experience! I've always wanted to try that out someday, just to see what it would be like. I am always in awe of the power involved in these waves.
amazing. Truly a GREAT lake. I keep telling my cousin from California to come surf in Michigan if he wants a real challenge, and he doesn't believe we even get waves. Huntington Beach doesn't hold a candle to this lol.
One of the biggest challenges of fresh vs. salt water surfing is that fresh water is _much_ less bouyant and takes a minute to adjust! Also, the only time to get an overhead, or double overhead wave is in November or December, so the wet suit you use in Cali just won't cut it in 30 degree water! Tell him to search "lake superior surfing" and listen to the pros talk about how "difficult" it is.
One thing making surfing much more difficult in Lake Superior or Lake Michigan, is the fact of the waves being MUCH closer together. They aren't "Swells" like in the ocean, rather they are much more forceful and relentless. I've swam in both the ocean, and Lake Michigan. No comparison.... Lake Michigan is way more intense.
This video is "tame" compared to some of the November Storms. Hurricane force winds in a relatively(compared to the Oceam) make the wave crest even a great distance of shore.
Kind of afraid to swim in any of the great lakes....heard the riptides and undercurrents were way more aggressive and dangerous. Not to mention that devastating howling wind....not messing with the witch of November.
I spent my childhood summers in Ontonagan beside Lake Superior. There were often storm waves but never this big. These look like Pacific waves on the Oregon Coast. It looks like this was shot at Painted Rocks>
I currently live on Lake Ontario, we get some decent sized waves, but nothing compared to Lake Superior .. visited Thunder Bay saw the "sleeping giant" definitely want to do it again!!!
Even though Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world it makes me think about the East coast of the Atlantic Ocean on the coast of Massachusetts of course in a small craft advisory
This is amazing🧐 I live in Tampa bay but remember when my family came from Ohio and cousins would go fish lake michigan and catch huge catfish now I laugh cuz I fish deep sea. But Great Lakes have thier own majesty bout them.
Starting a new unit of area measurement for the Great Lakes. It's called the jersey. One jersey = 8729 sq miles. It's based on the land area of the state of New Jersey. Looks like lake Lake Ontario is just over 1 jersey in sq miles. I have to accurately calculate this. I will find out how many jerseys each Great Lake is in area.
I will show up there and say" hey, superior, u r not an ocean. Stop trying to be what u r not! U have no sharks, tides, or barnacles! U r just an oversized version of my Boy Scout lake in New Jersey. Stop pretending!!
