I may get flak for this, but goodness some of the comments here are just sooo.blegh. Why is everyone having a go at the crowd? You guys act like the world bows to the Haka and treats it with some reverence...they do not. Saffers sing Ole as loud as they can to drown out the Haka, the Poms sing Swing Low Sweet Chariot, Irish sing Fields of Athenry. Even the Scots chant SCOOOTLAND during Hakas. ...Do you guys watch rugby? Yes it's a nice tradition, but buddy, it's a war c ry, and you're away from home, expect to get some response from the home supporters.
Its fine mate, I'm a Kiwi and the Haka is both showing our respect and offering of a challenge. It's a war dance. Its only right that you answer it and your crowd backed up your team which is the right thing to do.
Australian here bra... its a challenge.... We hear the challenge, and we respond... I receive the Haka bare chested, I feel the energy, I accept the challenge. Yankees can Pee their pants and run away. I hear your challenge, last man standing wins!!
Yeah, so... what was the final score? New Zealand 120 - 3 USA? I mean, yes show you are hosting, but also they better know they place... like if it were basketball, kiwis would definitely show respect
Mate, read British-NZ history, they tried to wipe them out, the took their lands, but the maoris are a different kind of people, I’m sure you will enjoy reading up
And that's exactly what Maoris are!, Gladiators!. As an Aussie I can say that we hold the highest respect for our kiwi brothers and sisters and are always in awe of the haka! The haka is strenght, agility, force, passion, love of country and pride!.
And also it psych's them up and intimidates the other team. It's a war dance designed to intimidate the other side. And I understand that much better teams then the usa find it very intimidating to stand on the field and watch it with these huge guys (who are also the best rugby players in the world) knowing you have to face them in battle.
@@lilith3953 it's not actually just for intimidating people, it can also be used as a celebration of someone's life or as sign of respect and love to someone who has died
truly one of the best comments yet. the U.S. don't realise how they leave themselves wide open for the rest of the world to take the piss out of them!! Jeez i do sometimes love the stupid yanks.
Imagine thinking fucking sheep is a culture on some gun less socialist island in the middle of no where while a country with almostly 400million (with many more trying to clamber in) is cultureless. Truly brain dead comment, massive lol when you die to Islamic extremists
I'm from the US and I found the Haka both intimidating and emotional. It's was fun to watch and I have a huge appreciation to other cultures and their traditions.
@Edward Nicolas Arrienda Torralba Serious?! the respons has to be from the players not from the crowd! the crowd was disrespectful en stupid. you just don't do this if you respect the Haka or other traditions of the opponent! but if you stand by your remark, next time the crowd of another country/club is shouting and dancing during your national anthem... I wonder what your reaction would be..
You just know looking at him, he was one of those guys at the school games who got into fights with the other team before the Haka was over. Then after much blood spilt, everyone shakes hands and are best friends again after the game. I loved growing up a Kiwi!
Its not disrespectful. Its part of the banter that adds to the excitement. e.g Haka expert deems Irish singing at RWC ‘fantastic’ despite criticism it was disrespectful ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2__0liK7y9I.html
I feel like he is the only one that respects the Haka and the NZ traditions. Not to be mean towards Americans but they unfortunately seem very narrow minded when it comes to culture.
@@jennaschmidt3332 I think we're slowly waking up when it comes to different cultures. The haka being a perfect example. When i first saw the haka i was confused like anybody else who's never seen it before. The crazy eyes, the mean faces, the ferocious movements, all while not missing a beat. However the more i understood it the more I felt connected to it as a man.(while not even having maori blood) Just like the guy in the beats haka documentary said. You feel connected to it regardless of race.(I'm paraphrasing) That narrowmindedness is still a big problem, but the information age allows us to see what we couldn't before. The smart people will take advantage of this while the others remain blissfully ignorant.
This is definitely an underrated sport in the US, unlike basketball, football, baseball, etc. Love watching the Maori and AB teams, the haka is awesome in all its variations.
@@user-zs4es2hm2d Depends on the cultural context from which you look at it. Keep looking at it from a Western perspective and you'll miss a much older and deeper meaning of what's being shown.
I'm not surprised. As a European child immigrant to Australia back in the 70's. I was picked for a local netball team. I don't know why since I was short & scrawny. But anyway. We were facing off with a Maori team. And the Maori girls started doing the Haka - I have never been so facking scared in my entire farcking life! And as I bolted, raucous laughter burst forth from the players, the coaches, the referee & the audience. If done right - this shite really works. It's absolutely terrifying! Since then, I've made countless Maori friends. They have the best sense of humour on the planet. Hearts of gold. Brilliant mates. Loyal to the last breath. But. They're bat-shite crazy & I would never challenge any of them - they're farcking insane - whilst I'm still little. I know my limitations.
Haka is just so empowering like you can feel it even through the screen, what more if you’re actually there. I hope more countries would be educated of this culture because when the NZ basketball team came to the Philippines, a lot of people made fun of it because we didnt know what it was and a lot felt intimidated by it. If only we knew the amount of respect it actually represents.

Seeing the Haka always makes me emotional.... I'd love to know how it feels to be on the opposing team... how it feels to be facing the N.Z team... it must be amazing.
This is so awesome. Beautiful culture. I feel there power there unity and confidence. US is like wth why don’t we have that!! Every Haka I have watched leaves me with chills!
Estuvieron en Chile y se respeto su ritual en silencio es como su himno Nacional , los gringos como siempre pasarse alos demas por la raja pero ahi quedaron temblando con tanta energía
The haka is tradition,,,from a South african bok supporter,,,,we respect the haka,,,,and I feel every team can respect it,, USA Got crunched up over a 100 points at home while laughing at the ALL BLACKS,,,we respect the haka,,, it does'nt mean we're scared of the All blacks,,,I just love the haka
Big ups to usa for accepting it in there own way respect...rugby is like a battlefield something yous know more then anyone... but on this battle field we are the big dogs and this is our yard 😛
...Rugby Union...a game for thugs played by gentlemen...and there will be beer or stout over lunch or dinner, hosted together by both teams, after the game....gamesmanship at its best...simple...
For those who can feel the haka transmit through their spirit...that is our wairua/spirit we emit when channeling it...when done correctly...its like a mother lifting a car off her child from being crushed...every sense of your body tingles and your mind seperates from your body...you are no longer in charge...its like the last dash of a running race when your legs are moving and your going along for the ride on a cloud.
With the haka your group is honored, the rival is honored, the friend and his own ancestors are honored, the enemy and his ancestors are honored, before the battle.
I was there, the energy at soldier field was intoxicating to say the least, even if it wasn’t even close to a sold out crowd, I”ll never forget that day.
And? Are you suggesting that soldiers aren't an appropriate response to warrior culture, or are you mad because the American culture is demonstrably superior?
@@user-zs4es2hm2d lol 😆 😂 🤣 superior have a look on Google what the maori did to the American soldiers back in 1943 for being too damp racist. It's call the battle of mana Street our worries smash all your superior soldiers you call them .lol lol superior what a joke 🤣 😂 😆
Yea i watched heaps of Hakas online and watching this guy is like watching a warrior from 100s of years ago about to attack a army with hes sword. ..that yell at 1:18 is like something from a warrior movie
@@RedTerrorist13 ok im going to assume you are young or just plain stupid. It's Rico...what's wrong with you? Praise someone up and not know how to spell their name! Pretty easy name to spell by the way you idiot
The most amazing reaction from the crowd I've seen was in Japan. The Japanese were dead silent, and didn't try to drown out the chant with shouting or singing, so you could hear the it echo through the stadium. They are a strange people.
We as South Africans respect the All Blacks, because they are one of the best teams in the world, but if you look at how the Springboks react to the haka you will see that they are not intimidated at all, seeing that they are just as hard and is also one of the best teams in Rugby Union.
The All Blacks from New Zealand are a tough team and much respected in the rugby world. I don't think that the US can beat them any time in the near future. You can see the spirit and determination of the All Blacks team in the face of their leader. He didn't even flinch. Poor US guys. But I liked how they carried their flag into the field. Americans are a proud nation and they like showing it off with their flag and their national anthem. That's their style and I respect it. Greetings from Greece.
The Eagles have learned how to stand up to the haka. And good on them for doing it. Now they just need to learn how to beat the All Blacks. That's a bigger ask. But we're already more than halfway there because we took the first step: taking on the haka with courage.
Wow... that's the first comment Ive seen In ages from an American that doesn't involve disrespecting or pissing on another culture. Maybe there are a few good ones in the bunch.... your team is getting better, give it a few more years and yous will be sweet.. 🤙
as a kiwi you guys will be dangerous once you get the right support system going for your players, you've definitely got the variety already. Keep on pushing mate.
@@B-Durry Cheers, mate. Your country and your union are the gold standard for what the Eagles, at all levels, are trying to achieve. Ya'll set the standard, we're just trying to exceed it. But real recognizes real, and I'm glad you see the progress we've made. This is new rugby territory the world game is going into.
Oh now this. This is something. The immense will and pride of the people of the USA, met in equal measures for once by the power and intensity of the All Blacks. Neither side knows quite how to respond to the other, but both know how much of a fight the other side will give. Today, I am satisfied.
As an All Black fan, USA are actually the sleeping giants of rugby. If all their focus (money, resources etc.) go into rugby like they do NFL.....they will be a serious contender.
that's the way it goes, aha. don't worry about it though, you guys will get better. You made it to the RWC, and if you can get out of your pool you can take Canada's spot and automatically qualify for next year! (Canada won't make it to the quarters. RIP.)
I think because its not our tradition, and the fact we were never taught about it that we didnt understand jow to accept it! No one was being disrepectful, and the haka was highly respected, a d most of us thought the haka is truly inspiring! So i guess i don't have to tell you where to stick that "typical American" comment! We are all generally nice people with a desire to learn about other cultures! Don't judge us by what our government does, or what your news media tell you to believe about my people!
Disrespectful, they were in the United States. What gives you fucking Kiwi's the right to have the last word before the game starts? Get out of here with your trash haka, they're just a bunch a brutes. I don't care how big or strong they are, they ain't bullet proof. Sorry not sorry
The haka is a traditional and cultural ritual that's not only is practiced and performed in the sports arena but at any venue to which a group shows courage and respect before going to war or battle and many cases sending off someone in a funeral or special events like wedding etc. I am a Tongan American living in East Coast USA and some years ago the All Blacks in their only trip to the US played the US national team in Philadelphia and let me just say how rude the US fans were during the haka by the All Blacks. I was so livid! What if the NZ fans in NZ did the same thing during the Star Spangled Banner in NZ, no one would dare in any country the US play in. Like the Great Don King once said, "Only In America"
To put it simply...it's a great shock to the system when you've been told your whole life that you are the leader of the free world even though no one voted for you and that you are the greatest nation on earth...it's like finding out Santa isn't real. I feel sorry for them.
honestly, I think it's really funny that you can't bring yourself to acknowledge the obvious: the USA is the leader of the free world & the greatest nation on earth. there's no other nation it could be. what would you suggest... germany? lol! then again, we're no good at rugby, so if it makes you feel better to focus on that, you go right ahead.
The culture of Rugby, or just the particular New Zealand customs surrounding it. As far as I know, rugby was invented in Ireland. And what about all the other countries that play rugby. Are you saying that we should learn their cultures as well. I'm all for that. But don't pretend that what you call 'rugby culture' is just about the Haka and Maori customs. To do that, you are really disrespecting every other culture that has contributed to that great game.
once, a roman general hears people singing in the far distance coming nearer to their direction. He asked who were they. His lieutenants say they are the 'enemy'. He could hear them singing loud in unison and in spirit. He gave the orders for the man to pack up and leave saying, how could they fought such a powerful army. ( Try to look for this story. You might be surprised who this 'enemy' is. )
@@manaturipa4017 Why you got disrespect their country tho, let them do whatever they want. How would you feel if people started talking mad shit about our haka. That is the american culture, they are a powerful country. So I guess they used a soldier to symbolize that
