I had the same problem, you gotta play with the calibration. You can also pick Kirby as your character and it’s more forgiving on timing.

As far as the calibration is concerned, I recommend adjusting the delay, which is specified in ms, to the input lag of the TV or monitor. Because the function with the press on the sound is very imprecise. E.g. the TV or monitor has a lag of 13 ms, so enter the delay -13 on the drum controller.
