Epic Realistic Mountain Landscapes in Minecraft

Today I showcase a project I've been working on for a few weeks: Realistically sized mountains in Minecraft. These are so large that they could actually be classified as 1:1 scale mountains. The ones showcased in this video are around 1,500 blocks tall and consume all of my computers RAM :)

xD well to be fair it gets even worse when looking at more chunks, if im looking away its not that bad, but at times it can be like 4 seconds per frame

hahaha thank you xD Funnily enough, there's actually mods that are starting to be able to render this much (and more) without the game being a slideshow, though not vanilla sadly, tho I'll be looking into them :o

Well, if Hello Games actually manages to deliver on what Sean has said about Light No Fire, then it'll have life-sized mountains, which would certainly put Todd's "See that mountain? You can climb it." quote to shame.

Something about seeing the grand scale of mountains always makes me feel small in the world, in a good way knowing none of our problems matter and it's okay to let go of worries. There is something bigger than us. It's crazy how you simulated that experience in Minecraft. Watching these massive scales was stunning, and humbling. Sorry if thats too deep for a Minecraft video 😂😅

⁠under dh options, world gen, only use generated chunks… then fly around and bam it’s generated it’s sql files for the world, did this with my 1:175 earth 🗺️

Minecraft 2.0 type beat. Only thing missing imo would be to simulate layers of mineral deposits in the terrain using different rock types, would look best on cliffs and mountains.

wow, these minecraft guys should do an update to increase this height limit and add better mountains to the game, i'm sure that'd be a quick patch for them

Ask any coder to even attempt something like this, and their brains would melt like warm cheese. We, as a type 0 civilization on the Kardeshev scale are far too inexperienced, and utterly unworthy, of currently producing even a facsimile of this for the average layman at least for the foreseeable future. It would take decades, or perhaps even a few hundred years, before computer engineers can even call themselves competent.

@@yemm442 or, yknow, make a voxel renderer which is actually optimised and just... do it. Veloren is a great example of this, it has similar scale, and runs pretty well. It does have a bit lower chunk render distance, but compensates by rendering a lower res mesha further away so you still get the feeling of scale. Theres also projects which use voxel graphics where each block is much much smaller, which also means rendering far more blocks.

Minecraft already has psuedo endless chunks on the horizontal axis, it logically seems as though it shoud not be any more trouble on the vertical axis. I know Minecraft's world generation is almost designed as if the game is 2D, though, which leads to limitations on what can be done in the vertical axis.

If Mojang wanted, they could probably figure something out. the Cubic chunks mod works pretty well, and distant horizons works too, i think it would be possible, tho I doubt it would ever be in vanilla, for the average player there's usually no need, most people probably dont wanna spend 30 mins climbing a mountain for a desert lol

This is really amazing! Would love to play this, but I think my laptop would just self destruct... It would be interesting if there was a mod that allowed only the nearest 32 chunks to render in for real, and only showed the top most layer of the blocks further out, like a placeholder that only rendered the chunk properly as you moved into it.

There are some mods that do something like this, distant horizons is one, and there is also a mod that works with the cubic chunks mod

Yeah, distant horizons is one! I haven't tested it but it would likely work with something like this, I didn't use it here because it doesn't work with shaders and i cant recall if it was out yet for this version, but I'll probably end out trying out on this at some point.

I want to experience this mountain, mabye Distant Horizons mod could help with performance? This is Minecraft I always dreamed of. I am guessing that you used 1.19 or later version.

I haven't tested it, but if it works that could be pretty great, I didn't use it here mainly because shaders isn't compatible but I'll try it out!
