I have so much respect for John Riggins. Can't think of many RBs who gained more tough yards (i.e., between the tackles) in their careers. The guy scored 128 touchdowns in the regular season and playoffs and never spiked the ball after any of them. Never bitched, never moaned, never talked smack (at least openly). Just went back to the huddle then lined up for the next play. That's what I call a man's man. #HOF

Diesel Riggins is one of my favorite NFL players of all time. For exactly the reasons you mentioned and more. The White House dinner party incident 🤣😂. I love his running style. He wasn’t all power like a Campbell or Alstott. Riggins had outstanding vision + he could turn it on for 50-60 yds for a big guy.

Why do teams wear the wrong color uniforms like this sometimes?
@russellmurray3964
@russellmurray3964 3 года назад
@@markaveryjr7463 Starting in 1981, Washington predominantly wore white jerseys at home just to make sure that the Dallas Cowboys couldn't wear their white jerseys when playing on the road at RFK - it was basically payback against their NFC East rivals, just so Dallas couldn't get away with wearing the white jerseys all the time and feeling as if they were the home team and getting a psychological edge from it. It also had (I guess, if someone believes in these things) the effect of making Dallas play in their less familiar, less comfortable road blue jerseys. The only time Washington wore their dark jerseys in 1984 was in their week 15 game at Dallas, according to The Gridiron Uniform Database (www.gridiron-uniforms.com/GUD/controller/controller.php?action=teams-season&team_id=DAL&year=1984). The New York Giants also did this starting in 1980, and I think the other NFC East teams eventually followed suit (from what I can tell, the Philadelphia Eagles started doing this in 1986). The Cardinals seem to have been the earliest NFC East team to figure out this gambit, but oddly enough had given it up by the mid-80's.

Despite the disappointing home playoff loss, this was one of my favorite years as a Redskins fan. They started 0-2 after playing their first two games against the two eventual Super Bowl contestants, the Dolphins and 49ers. Because of this they spent the rest of the year scrapping and fighting to stay in the playoff race. They suffered many injuries over the course of the season, but a career year from Art Monk and a timely defense kept them competitive. Entering the last two games of the year they had to come out on top both in Dallas and at home against St Louis to win the division. In Dallas in week 15 they had to overcome a 15 point halftime deficit and score late in the 4th to win by just 2 points. On the last day of the regular season they faced the Cardinals in a game that would determine the division champion. Art Monk came up big, scoring two touchdowns, gaining 136 yards, and breaking the record for catches in a season along the way. His last catch of the day was on 3rd and 18. He gained 19 and set up the game winning field goal from Moseley. Maybe they just didn't have enough left to take down this tough Bears team after all of that. Their usually great offensive line was held together by duct tape due to injuries, and it shows here. This was one of the great rivalries in the league from '84 to '91.

BIG DAMN FACTS!!!! As a Dallas Cowboys fan who loved the late great Don Coryell & ALL of his offensive disciples I had great admiration & respect for the legendary Joe Gibbs ESPECIALLY his 1st stint as Washington Redskins head coach from 1981-92 EASILY one of the greatest teams in NFL history & arguably the best coached team of that era.

I too was a Dallas fan in the early 80s (I was a kid 10 yrs old in ‘82). In recent years thanks to RU-vid the Redskins 1980-85 has become a team I really admire. I love watching their big games vs the Cowboys, 49ers, Bears, Raiders, Giants... -Theisman -Riggins -Monk -C.Brown -D. Green -Manly -The 🐽’s -The Smurfs Coach Gibbs I like this era Redskins more now than I ever did the Danny White era Cowboys. PS my idea a couple of years ago when they had to change their name/mascot was to keep things as close as possible and changing just enough to get the (whoever) off of their backs. Keep the helmet logo the same except remove the Native American head and replace it with a capital “W” inside the circle. Keep the hanging feathers. There’s no law against feathers (last I knew). Then change the name from the Redskins to “The Skins”. 💥 BAM.... done. Technically there wouldn’t be anything wrong with that. No more native head, no more word “Red”. I truly wish they would’ve done this. The Commanders is just dumb. Bland, meaningless.

It's so interesting how the '85 Bears are revered in history but the defenses that sandwiched them are often forgotten. The '84 Bears still have the record for most sacks by a defense in a single season with 72 (!!!) and allowed fewer yards. Those teams were just as good as 85. If only McMahon wasn’t injured so often. The Bears win/loss record when he actually played was insane. Consistently having to start backups like Fuller, Tomczak and even Flutie for that 86 playoff game wasn’t ideal, even with the best running back and defense of all time.

out of all the great defenses the bears teams of the 1980's had both ditka and ryan said the 1984 bears defense was the best of them all. 1984 bears still hold nfl record for sacks in a season at 72! good to see games like this .. real football not the 2 hand touch we see in todays nfl.

The game after this the Redskins got dominated by the Bears, but in 86 and 87 the Redskins beat the Bears in the playoffs. They figured out how to beat the Bears blitz and sadly Jim McMahon was never ever healthy. The Redskins would also win in 90 and 91 while the Bears would only win in 88. The Redskins would capture another 2 Super Bowls.

I remember watching this game in a pool hall. Some poor guy had a nickel on Washington (if memory serves, he was laying 9 or 10 points) and he was pretty much dead by the early 3rd quarter, and while that was going on, he was in a straight pool money match and had to watch his opponent make around 80 balls in a row to beat him out of another few hundred. He then tried to get even betting the Broncos with Elway at home in the late playoff game laying 4 against visiting Pittsburgh and had to see Mark Malone (remember him?) and the Steelers rally and upset the Broncos outright. I'm sure he was a ray of sunshine by the time he finally made it home to his wife that night.

@@rjam1974 Believe it or not, Joe Washington did return to the game after that vicious hit. I was in the 6th grade during the '84 season. The Redskins got royally screwed on poorly called fumbles by Joe Washington and Calvin Muhammad, respectively. Of course, they had their chances to win the game irrespective of those calls (as they wasted three possessions in the 4th quarter where they were in the Bears' territory and wasn't able to put any points on the board), but those egregious turnovers (both called as the Redskins were on solid drives) turned out to be the difference in the game.

@@rjam1974 Moseley definitely started to tail off after his MVP season in '82. I had forgotten about his missed kick in the playoffs versus Chicago. I do remember him missing four FGs against the 49ers in the NFC Championship game in '83, which damn near cost us. But that's a subject for another day. The Redskins had their opportunities versus the Bears as they didn't muster any points from three possessions in Chicago's territory in the 4th quarter. That can't happen and shouldn't have happened in my opinion. Frankly, that cost the 'Skins the game.
