They are from The Netherlands. Been around since 2002, formed by guitarist Mark Jansen, after parting ways with his former band After Forever. Lead singer Simone Simons, 17 in 2002, started singing training in pop, but switched to this style after hearing Tarja with Nightwish. Keyboardist Coen Janssen , Mark and Simone, have all been there since 2002. Current lineup, constant since 2012, also includes Isaac Delahaye on guitar, Bassist Rob van der Loo, and drummer Arien van Weesenbeek. 8 albums and several EP's to date. Love the slow build on this song. The performance is from the Omega Alive concert, their 2021 virtual show, recorded over 5 days, and streamed online when they couldn't tour due to restrictions. Yes, Simone has an awesome voice, Mark will add some harsh vocals in a lot of songs. A contrasting vocal style sometimes referred to as Beauty and the Beast. Would you believe that EPICA have been making music for 22 years? they have made 8 studio albums and lots of other projects and releases In the same genre as Nightwish 'Symphonic Metal', their music ranges from breathtakingly beautiful to very heavy, and every style in between, they have more variety in their music than any other band I can think of.

Greta reaction ladies. Epica (epic-a) is a Dutch symphonic metal band with similar vibes to Nighwish (many people inckuding myself are fans of both) but heavier and more symphonic. Once upon a Nightmare is one of their many gorgeous ballads that really showcases Simone Simons beautiful crystal clear powerful voice. Song is inspired by the Germanic mythological creature the ErlKing or Alder King who stalks children in the woods and lures them to their death. Performance is from their COVID era Omega Alive concert with no crowd. Recorded live over several days on multiple sets it was livestreamed in one two hour event. For Lulu, Simone has been a spokeswoman for L"Oreal cosmetics in Europe and has a blog Smoonstyle where she talks about her two big interests outside of singing, beauty and photography. She also has lots of photographs and videos on her instagram showing her makeup for concerts. Epica was founded by Mark Jansen (one of th guitarist's and their growler) after leaving After Forever. After Forever was Floor's first band (they are not releated). Recommend Unleashed live from their 10th anniversary Retrospect concert next. Their is a more recent official video of the song but I prefer the older live version with live orchestra and choir on stage for it's more expansive soundscape.

Oh my, this is a great start to listening to Epica! I suggest continuing down this rabbit hole! Epica has a lot of variation in their music, from really hard metal to stunning ballads. I suggest "Consign To Oblivion" (live at Zenith performance) for one of their harder songs, and "Tides of Time" (studio version) for one of the most amazing rock ballads ever made.

Thank you so much for getting to Epica. They are "Epic" When it comes to symphonic metal, they are the peers of Nightwish with a harder edge. Simone Simons, the singer, has a voice that will give you goosebumps every time. Songs that you should consider would be Unleashed (I would listen to the version from Retrospect with a full orchestra and choir), Rivers feat. Apocolypticia, from the AFAS show, and when you are ready, Kingdom of Heaven, Part 3 from the Omega Alive show. You have found a wonderful rabbit hole. p.s., At the Retrospect show, Floor Jansen was a guest singer with Simone on two songs, Sancta Terra and Sabat Mater Delarosa, an ancient hymn.

I love that Coen is playing on a wing (piano) instead of a keyboard. Such a gorgeous sound. There are still so many of their songs I haven't listened to. This was one of em and I listened to it with you! :)

Fun fact: Simone Simmons the lead vocalist joined epica with only 18 year old back in 2002 I think it was a year before because the first album came out in 2002 when mark Jansen the lead guitarist and growls left after forever (first floor Jansen band) to formed epica. till nowadays she still in the band.

It was worth the wait ladies - a pity Kathy wasn't there for this. They are on a par with Nightwish. Yes Lulu, Simone's hair is lovely, she is beautiful, sings like an Angel, designs her outfits, designs the Epica artwork , is a very good photographer, has modelled for L'Oréal.
