I fell in love with P90s about 7 years ago , I started on a cheap strat copy, but within a couple of months a humbucker was in the bridge position, and they were it! for like 20 odd years! I got an Eastman junior and it's AWESOME! I LOVE IT!
I recently bought the Fazley version of this guitar. looked like it had been fished out of the canal when it arrived. took me all day to clean and polish, the frets were very very scratchy. its very pretty now, plays well.interestingly it has epiphone stamped under the bridge.
You might be pleasantly surprised by the Fazley model, I had a fazley guitar which was a different model, the jm style, the guitar had a nice feeling neck especially after a light rubbing with steel wool, the only thing I changed was the pickups and the knobs. I went with stacked p90 neck and bridge, and Wilkinson firebird pickup in the middle. Will be looking at another Fazley guitar soon, probably the black flying V style
You might consider grabbing a Donner DLP-124. I stumbled on them while looking for a cheap single cut for fun, was so cheap I thought it couldn't possibly be any good - so grabbed one for the hell of it. I did have to dress the frets as they were a bit scratchy, also the action was a tad high, but the actual instrument finish quality all over on the body and neck is amazing. Also the binding on body, neck and headstock is sweet. Best of all, the twin humbuckers sound really good (IMHO). At the price, it's definitely worth adding to the collection.
the volume and tone buttons are there for a reason, and they work unlike some guitars where the tone especially may as well have an on/off switch. I have laboured over buying one of these for a while, but still not 100% sure.
It's not a bad thing that both John and Colin are checking out Juniors recently. The Epi Junior is $590CAD in Canada so it's not cheap, and I end up wondering, as always, if a two pickup Epi or Squier guitar for the same price is just a better deal. Unless a newbie is following either a favourite artist or teacher's advice, owning a one pickup guitar seems more about exploring personal playing styles and different gear than 'forcing' a player to become more versatile by virtue of only one pickup. But then I'm no stranger to using both volume and tone to tame two pickups. A good example is the hot wound dual blade minis (17kΩ/26kΩ) I'm currently playing where adjusting tone and volume is mandatory unless they are split.
Maybe it's that you have to use the guitars controls ,maybe it's the where you play (as you say creative with how you play). Nice tune. Anything that gets you having a bit of fun has to be good. 👍
The limitations of one pup make you think and play differently. That's the point. He's got a wall full of multi pup guitars already if that's what he feels like playing.
I don't think the absence of a neck pickup makes the remaining pickup sound any better. I *do* think that the way it makes me play... Wondering if the volume/tone controls are in the best position for this part I'm playing right now... this forced me to think more creatively about the tone I was using at any given point. On balance though, I think I prefer having the flexibility of another "preset" tone being on tap by flicking to the neck pickup 👍
I play and own the high end Epiphones Customs Modern figured prophecy and Crestwood Models Epiphone is back to their glory days of top professional quality guitars have been since 2019 Norlin and Henry J deliberately destroyed the quality of Epiphone now the new owner brought it back ..
You forgot to mention the limited run of Epi 1960 Tribute Plus guitars which were made between 2011 - 2015. I own one ,it comes with Gibson Classic /57 pickups and wiring and it is outstanding ,just saying but I agree Henry J needs to be in prison!
At 379€ retail this is a no-brainer! I mean your lacking a brain if you buy one! An Epiphone Les Paul Special with 2 P90's and individual controls costs 20€ more. Even then I presume they are the same P90's which in my opinion sound dull, lifeless and devoid of character.I'm sure there are much better sounding guitars on the market at that price.
I brought a few new ones at GC about 10 years ago for less than $100.00 each. Boat paddles or firewood at best. Should have come with it's own firewood lighter. So they are better now? Sure hope so.
