So many comments regarding the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top. So I took some time to go over what I think are important factors when deciding to buy this great guitar.

+Mike Corey Save up for a Gibson Les Paul Standard, buy an Epiphone, and spend the rest on a nice amp.

I love my Epiphone LP Standard Plain Top in the Cherry Sunburst. Plays like a dream after a pro setup. You can't find a better guitar for the money. I could have gotten the plus top, but something about the plain top spoke to me.

I have massive respect for epiphone especially recently. They have really tried to step it up with quality and great components out of the box.

I have this same guitar. I had some Seymour Duncan Antiquities put in and added CTS pots. Then had a top to bottom setup done on it. I am blown away. I would just stress that if thinking about buying one of these play as many as you can to find the right one. They seem to be all over the map. Some of them are very well done, others not so much.

I wanna personally thank you for the info on proper setup, escpecially regarding the tunig issues. I've been playing a long time, but always had someone else work on my guitars. I always assumed it was the tuners(mine were Grovers 2) and I had the guitar for a coupla years & played out w/it for awhile, & always had tuning issues & had the "squeaky, creaky, string ping" noise when tuning. Didnt realize it was the strings hanging up on the saddle or nut. Luthier fixed all that & stays in tune now!

Before I get to far into this, I'll say I own this guitar, and I love it. I also owned Gibsons, and I loved them too. That said, buy the Epi, change it a bit if you want to. Adjust the neck to how you want it, and you will more than likely be very happy you bought this guitar.

Bought one of these LP Standard Plus Top Honeyburst August 2009 when Mr Les Paul passed on and it's my main guitar. I'm using Extra Beefy .54 - .11 strings and the stock pickups are incredible. Did the setup myself and I wouldn't part with this Les Paul because it is what it is! I've been listening to Les Pauls since I was 12 in 1970 but this is what I could afford and very happy. Also raise the magnetic posts in the humbuckers to your taste and you'll get some kick potency!

Don't get old. I get what I need from the Epiphone. People can criticize me all day long. But nobody can deny I can strangle some great sounds out of this guitar. It's how you play it that matters. If the guitar is comfortable, has a neck that feels like home to you, and you can make it sing while effortless to play, then who really cares what brand you're using? It's all about the music, not bragging rights over equipment.

Nice vid. Epiphone Les Pauls are really good guitars. I have two myself, a '56 Gold top which is a 1999 model that I've owned from New for 15 years. It looks great, it has a pair of really hot sounding P90 pickups. I love it to bits. I've never had a major issue with it. I had the switch changed about a year ago, but no big deal (as it was 13 years old). I've always found it holds its tuning. I bought an Alpine White Custom in February this year. It needed a set up, but that's all. It's got Probucker pickups which sound great, its an absolute looker too. Very happy with it. I have two other Epis as well (a Cherry Dot and an EJ200 acoustic in tobacco sunburst - again, both nice guitars. If I had the money, I'd buy a Gibson, and I suppose I could save up a bit and buy one, but why bother when Epiphones look and sound the part for a lot less. Gibson's do look and sound better, but on a subtle level. You have to look and listen hard to really notice (obviously that's aside from the name and the slightly different shaped headstock). If you haven't got a ton of money or you're not a professional musician, Epiphones are a fantastic option. As the lad says in his video, its mainly about the guitarist anyway.

I'm so blessed to be genuinely happy with my ES 339 Pro. To me, it's beautiful and I love playing it. I have no gripe with expensive guitars. some of them are amazingly tonal and beautiful. It's great to know that I can have such wonderful instruments available at realistic prices. We really are Lucky, Stew. Thanks for a great review!

Assessment time. 1. Is it a low E or high E buzz? 2. Open chords near the nut or only when you play certain notes up above the 10th fret? 3. What does the existing action feel like? Nice? Really low & easy to play, almost too easy? 4. Are your strings hitting your neck pickup? (Neck pickup adjusted too high? If it's not your action, (bridge height, or truss rod), lay a t-shirt on the strings & using your finger, tap the body near the pickups and bridge. Assess buzz.

Broken pots cost less than $10 US in parts and possibly $30 in labor at your local music repair shop. Ask yourself if you'd even use the coil splitting option at all. Most people buy a Les Paul for their humbucker tone or at least P-90's. This won't sound like a Tele or a Strat bridge/middle/neck at all because of the construction of this guitar. So if you just leave those pots down, then you won't risk breaking those pots. Plus the +Pro has better pickups than the Epi LP Std + Top.

I've done the same thing back when I was not educated on how tone and technique is achieved. Went out a bought a Marshall Stack and a Les Paul Standard with an MXR Screaming Mistress pedal. I didn't sound anything like Ace Frehley. I didn't suck any less with this very expensive equipment. Plus it was overkill for smaller venues. Every try to turn town on a Marshall 2 4X12 cabs in a small hall with concrete walls? I was melting eyeballs in that room, especially the sound engineer. And thanks.

Totally agree. Got a gig and needed something to do the job NOW. I just didn't have the luxury of shopping local places and just ordered. Still floors me that they think a cardboard box with Styrofoam wedges are going to stop a 5 foot tailgate truck drop. If there are any corners on the box buckled, don't even open, just send it right back. I bought a nicely padded deluxe gig bag for this guitar. I didn't want to buy a case that was half the price of the guitar.

I completely agree on what you said about getting the tone you want. Your gear obviously plays a role, but you don't need some super expensive guitar to sound good! When I go to guitar center, I usually play guitars that range from $400 - 700 like Fender Strats, or Teles, or Epiphones. I always plug into a Marshall DSL40C or 15C (I own the 40C) But seriously, that's less than a $1500 setup.

Check out the Plustop Pro too. Supposedly has better pickups and has coil tapping capabilities. The Plustop Pro also has a AAA flame maple top, prettier than the Plus Top I have. At least compare. If you don't like the upgraded pickups on the Plustop Pro, then get my version and replace with whatever pickups you want.

I just learned about the nut issues you are referring to. I thought the tuners on my Epi Ultra Les paul sucked, so I bought new ones. After taking it to my luthier friend he pointed out and fixed several things for me.1st of all the tuners were loose. He tightened them up and it stayed in tune much better. 2nd, the nut grooves needed 2 b filed like U said. 3rd, the bridge was loose and the grooves were 2 deep and v shaped on the saddles. He fixed everything and now it stays in tune great!

The new Epi LP's have ProBucker pickups. They sound almost as good as Gibson Burstbuckers.. As for the Selector switch problem, Epi does need to take a little more care in that department. It's a cheap fix though. Sometimes just blowing on it with canned air will help. Sometimes it's just a loose wire or bad solder joint. I own an Epi LP Ultra ii(loveit) and can't decide between an Pus top Pro, Tribute, or Prophecy for my next purchase. Great job on the video.

Great review!!!!! I am an Epiphone junkie and own 2 Epi acoustics (texan and hummingbird) and 2 electrics(les paul sg and epi dot) I wouldnt trade any of them!!! The haters are just people who have spent way too much money on a gibson. and cant stand the fact that epiphones are just as nice for a fraction of the price :)

they are good but they arent "JUST AS" nice as an actual GIBSON. they are good(very good in fact) but "NOT AS GOOD" the weight thing is up in the air because there are light gibsons, there are light epiphones, there are heavy guitars from both as well.the thing i should say is the epiphones ARE MORE DURABLE THAN THE GIBSONS.this is the truth, ive owned and own both right now.

I used to have one of these. It was purchased in 1999. This LOOKS a lot nicer than that did. The finish on the back of your neck looks like a picture of milky way- WOW. I put a Seymour Duncan D+ in the bridge and it worked really well for me. I am with you on the neck, it was comfortable, similar to this Peavey telecaster my friend used to have. I'm sorry I sold it.

I can't say enough about the Epiphone Les Paul Plus Top Pro....I'm in the process of buying a honey burst version and it is one of the finest players I've ever had, many of them costing much more money. No, it's not a Gibson Les Paul......but it is an exceptional instrument for the price they are asking. I'm telling you, players looking in the $400-$700 range never had it as good as they do nowadays.

Ive had 5 Gibson Les Pauls (Still have 4) and have had 3 Epiphone Les Pauls. I sold off all of my Epiphone Les Pauls and the only guitar that I regret getting rid of out of all the guitars I have gotten rid of is an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. It didn't look nearly as nice as the guitar this man has in this video, but it played like a monster. Miss that guitar tons.... ;(

Very enjoyable video. Informative and funny! I'm in the UK and I loved your edits, captions, etc., that's a very English sense of humour you have!On a serious note: I have eight Epiphones, (plus Gibson LPs and Fenders) and ALWAYS have new acquisitions setup up by an excellent luthier. It costs £98 a time but they play incredibly well - in tune, lowest action, levelled frets, etc, etc) and I just wonder how many people buy new guitars and think they're crap because in my experience ALL new guitars need a lot of setting up, after which you can truly bond with them. So my advice is simple: Pay for a top class setup. It will be worth everu single penny.

I was given a cheap guitar started to learn to play and now I'm hooked. I'm not rich so I was going to upgrade with the Les Paul 100. My God, you are so right on. I learned the hard way. To emulate my guitar hero, which is Alex Lifeson, I spent a FORTUNE to get his rig. The Gibson ES335, the Hughes & Kettner half stack, all the pedals and effects (to the best of my knowledge and financial means) You know what? Still couldn't get the tone. I was pissed. It finally hit me. Perhaps there is more to it than just gear. I believe that a third is the guitar, a third the amp, and a third your fingers and brain. Expensive lesson.

I've had both. Nothing like looking at the Porsche in the driveway rather than the Honda that looks like a Porsche.Yes, a bit of quality comparison too. But in this price range, for starting out, the Epiphones are way better than what I had available to me at 14. And unfortunately, to my eyes, a Gibson Studio just looks too stripped to be a real Les Paul in my eyes. It's got to have that top binding and carved maple top. Otherwise just give me a Flying V, which I do own as well.
@Stewmade64

Yeah, it takes a bit of finesse trying to adjust the saddle bridge, tune to pitch, frets out, raise the bridge back up a little, same problem, clamp the first fret & press the 21st fret to check the string/fret clearance at the 8th fret, too close, loosen the truss rod a 1/4, check 8th fret again, better, unclamp, retune, action now too high, adjust the saddle bridge down, retune to pitch, etc. It's a hassle but eventually you get there. If any tuning issues, have them check that nut too.

Well I purchased my Ibanez Les Paul second hand. The guy before me had already installed Grovers AND he sanded the entire back of the neck and headstock down to bare wood. He also oiled the heck out of that neck to seal it since it felt very smooth and the wood grain never swelled up when playing with sweaty hands.

There's just the one and you can't really tell unless your groupies are right on top of you. I replaced the screw back into the hole. That way I won't lose the screws when it comes time to put the plate back on. I really don't think it's that unsightly. The holes are so small. But that's just my opinion. The screw look just looks like it's part of the guitar.

Alex! Another great guitar hero of mine as well. If we could only learn his amount of tendon pressure and measure the exact amount of hand reflex to achieve his tone, then the rest of us might have a fighting chance at chasing that tone that we can't get enough of. And we can't talk about studio tone versus live tone. Alex nails that too. Even from his Telecasters, he gets a huge tone. Have you ever met Alex? He's a loveable goofball that constantly keeps you laughing. Plus he has no off switch.

Hey brother, great video and I highly agree with your comments. I had and Epi LP plain top a couple of years ago and thought that it was an excellent guitar for the money. As far as tuning issues go. I LIGHTLY filed the nut just like you said (actually on did the E A and D strings). Added a drop of nut lube to each nut slot. I used the old "string locking technique" (RU-vid it guys!). No more than 2 to 3 wraps per peg. Stretched and played the strings for about 20 mins. Never a tuning issue!

No, I have not met him. I have seen him in concert many times. Have you watched the video of the three of them having dinner at the lodge? If not, you should look it up. It really shows the personalities of them really well. And I shouldn't be too hard on myself. With that rig I bought to emulate him, I do get great tone, and the more I practice, the better I get. So, God permitting, I will achieve a degree of Alex I can enjoy. Thanks for the chat!

'96. It weighed in at 11 lbs. Limited run of an unusual finish on a usual standard. Antique Gold with an ambered logo on the headstock. It was gorgeous! Plus the way it looked in it's case against that magenta lining and silk color. If that same guitar was at least 9 lbs, I would have kept it. Sold that and my surf green '87 Strat Plus to buy a Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt one off between me and Dennis Galuszka. It was the only solution to keep the wife happy. I miss those the most.

I just bought an Epi LP Standard about 3 weeks ago. I had always had Strat style guitars prior to getting my LP. I do think that the Plus tops are gorgeous but not sure it's worth the extra cash. That's just my opinion thou. The guy that sold me mine could have pushed me toward a Gibson but he was big on the Epiphone, and really made me feel like I wasn't just getting a good value but also a great looking, sounding and built instrument.

4:22 Don't know if this has been said. But you really can't run away from neck joint cracks... The wood is still ''alive'' and is expanding and shrinking cause of humidity, and that causes cracks at places such as the neck joint. So as said, you can't run away from them.

Great review of this guitar. I was torn between this and a LP Studio and this - I'm certainly not disappointed I went for this. I have a mexican strat which I love so the comparison between the necks also resonates with me. I have an Epiphone SG I got a long time ago and the difference between the pickups is night and day compared to this thing. The only negatives I've had so far is the fret inlay on the 5th coming away but I sent it back and got that sorted. The other issue is with the pickup selector switch. It's pretty flaky and I've had the neck pickup cut out a few times. I plan to get this swapped out for something more decent soon but other than that - this guitar is a gem!

Any overwound humbucker pickup. Tonerider has a pickup called "Generator Set - TRH2" for about $50 each. Check out their soundfile for the TRH2 set on the Tonerider website. More bang for the budget. Dimarzio Super Distortion bridge & Air Classic neck run about $65 each. Seymour Duncans are a bit pricier but usually a JB Jr (SH-4) bridge and a Jazz neck pickup (SH-2) cost about $72-79 each. SD Antiquity, $115 each, Fralins $130 each, and Lollar Imperials, $165 each, & Harmonic Design; $170 each.

My son wanted versatility for the guitar, so I put the SD P-Rails with the so-called Triple Shot (TS) Switching Mounting Rings in it. Thus, you can easily switch from a full modern humbucker to a PAF style humbucker, to a P90 or a single coil; and all of them sound great. The only problem is that the mini-switches in the TS break up rather easily, the first ones lasted only a year or so.

Most of my Les Paul customers swap pickups and caps anyway, I advise them to go with a good Epiphone. The hardware is decent. Usually the fretwork is pretty good. For my customers that want perfect fret work with very little relief, I dress the frets in a jig that replicates string tension. I have to do that on PLEK'd Gibsons! The Epi's have good bones. Why spent $3k & then another $500 + on mods. I can make a $500 Epi play & sound as good as $3k+ Gibson. I have a R7, R8 & R0. I should know

Not necessarily. They offer an amazing "Black Beauty" Les Paul Custom, on ebay for under $500. Also, they do offer the "Plus Top" (flame maple top is the "Plus"), but is only offered in Heritage Cherry Sunburst. All I did was do a search on eBay for "Epiphone Les Paul Lefty" and about half a dozen popped up.

I've been playing for 35 years and have played plenty of crap guitars. I do defend the Epiphone line only because the quality is far greater than the Sears plywood crap I had to play on when I was 14. Also, at this stage, like you mentioned, I would not hesitate to jump on a chambered Gibson Goldtop Les Paul Std. But I still think my Epi LPS is gig worthy.

Just because it's expensive does not make it automatically a better guitar. I've also seen crap work done on Custom Shop guitars and I'm not talking Relics. I think your key advice is for people to just go out and and compare rather than just write off as crap without even trying first.

I don't see why not. But you'll have to adjust your truss rod to compensate for the lighter string tension, unless you plan on using 0.52-0.11 string gauge to offset the lack of string tension.

Hi Stew. Just recently got a Epi Les Paul Standard in Pelham Blue. Plays really good. Not a single problem with it. I'm still getting used to the neck profile a little. But jammed with it this afternoon. I'm fairly happy with it.

Funny, I have a 1976 ibanez Les Paul that I bought new in 1977.I was playing in a "road" band in 1976 that played clubs literally across the country.I had a 68 LP Gold Top.The guy playing lead had a 1972 Sunburst LP.When we hit the road for the first job he pulled out an Ibanez LP.He said that he leaves his Gibson home.Didn't take it on the road. The Ibanez (in his hands) sounded great.I bought one.Sold my Gold Top LP years later when money was tight.Still have my Ibanez. Beat up but still great.

A great video. Lot of good information (especially) for the youngters. My 15-years-old son has very similar guitar (, the pickups are changed to Seymour Duncans, though,) and it is as you said, it's a great guitar.

I just bought this model only it's light blue instead of traditional color. I love it, haven't had any of these problems yet. Is the Gibson model really heavier? Cause I didn't really think there was much difference. People who have to have it a Gibson are just buying the name.

Nice video, lots of useful info. My Epiphone Les Paul Ultra III will arrive at my house tomorrow. I will for sure give it a good once over for damage. This will be my second guitar my first came by mail and there were no shipping issues with that one. zZounds packages their guitars pretty good for shipping. Again thanks for the video. I will sub your channel and be watching for new vids. Thanks.

Hey Stew what's up? My name's Mike and I just bought a Epiphone Les Paul 1960 Tribute Plus and I love the guitar because it's in a vintage sunburst and all the hardware on the guitar is exactly the same as you would find on a Gibson Les Paul its got Grover Locking Tuners USA made Gibson 57 Classic Pick ups etc etc if I had the money to go out and pay for a Gibson Les Paul I would still prefer the Epiphone 1960 Tribute because all in all it's a Gibson and cost just over 600 bucks but I use my action low on all my guitars and I do the set ups myself but I got this crazy fret buzz on the A string of the Tribute Plus that I cant get rid of so I sent it to a pro. Nice review. Thanks. Mike.

+Mike Swann What did the pro say? I'm betting money on a nut string slot cut too low. Epiphone gets an F grade when it comes to cutting nut slots. BTW, what's your string gauge? 10-46"?

I buy my Guitars from Sweetwater. They seem to go the extra mile packing them so they won't be damaged. My Epiphone guitar came in it's factory Epiphone box which was packed inside a second cardboard box. The Epiphone box was cushioned with bags of shaped foam and brown wrapping paper packing. Not a chance the guitar would get damaged unless someone deliberately wanted to damage it like jumping up and down on the box.

Yeah Sweetwater goes the extra mile always. A lot of people don't know how these instruments are shipped. It's not the dealer's fault, it's Epiphone's. Even a gig bag inside of the cardboard carton would be helpful.

Ah, there you said it: '85 MIJ Strat. I miss mine. 1985's "Diamond in the Rough." Don't ever let that Strat go. They are proving to be some of Fender's best out of Japan in those days. Spot on details. Anyway, find a place that will give you a 30 day money back return policy if it's not for you.

Depends on what year. I'm sort of disappointed in the quality of working coming out of Fender these days. Custom Shop now is more consistent but still has their days. I would go more for the Japanese versions these days. For an entry level guitar, I guess they are okay. a MIM HSS made prior to 2010 might be better.

I removed it. My review "New Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top (Honeyburst)", I received lots of requests regarding the removal of the pickguard. So I basically removed just for this video. I kind of like it off because it shows off more of that awesome flame maple (veneer.) I just leave the screws from the pickguard in the holes. That way I don't loose them when I replaced the pickguard. A lot of people just leave the holes. You can only tell up close.

I bought a cardinal red epiphone les paul a month ago. It was an indonisian one, and I noticed a chip near the nut - exactly where this dudes crack was - , the open b string buzzed no matter how high the action was, and the tone knobs were really low to the body. I took it back and got a replacement new one from the store, wow what a difference between the two guitars. My new one is a chinese one, the finish looks better, no flaws in the finish or chips and the knobs are on properly. No buzzing frets etc. tldr - ive had two, one was awful, one IS brilliant. Be sure to try it first!!!!!!

Yeah, just get it set up unless you do that work to your guitars anyway. I do everything short of repairing set necked guitars. As long as that nut is clean and clear of any burrs or improper slot width, those Grovers will work just fine. So many people are throwing money away thinking the tuners are crap. People would spend less money just having the nut cleaned out with a nut file and a setup than discover the tuning issue still exists. BTW, glad to hear you kicked cancer's butt.

I'd go with some push-pull pots instead of the mini toggles. That way you can still split away or parallel/series wire all you want without wasting 1/2 second running for a toggle. They also make 10 db boost pots with a trim pot (inside the control cavity) for adjusting how much boost/gain you want. Might require a 9 volt to operate. P-Rails are cool. What music does he play?

Thanks, I needed to hear that! I mistakenly bought an Epiphone online. I didn't read the head stock. Anyway I'd like to have a, Gibson Les Paul; however it's gonna have to wait. I realize it's the work I put into my guitar, not the guitar that's in my hands. Alright, thanks again!

Ha ha ha that was a great review you are one funny guy. Dont sleep on the Epiphones. I have an old Gibson Gold top deluxe and still swapped out the pickups. Epiphones are great guitars. Les Paul commented on that himself.
