Both sound so similar. I own the 59 and love the sound, but the neck profile is what sold me. It just feels great, easy to play and less hand fatigue if playing for a long period of time.

To think that the prices of these two are similar and the 59 ltd ed has Gibson pickups, I think it's a no brainer. But at the same time, it's mind blowing that the Epiphone slashbucker pickups (clones of the Gibson slashbuckers) sound so good, so similar to the Gibson ones...

The gibsom slash buckers that slash does not use . Slash still tells Gibson to use the Duncan's when he gets the custom shop to build him a guitar. He recently had gibson custom build him a full size humbucker firebird and they used the Duncan's.

Yeah, I think it comes down to looks and (maybe) price between the two. The 59 has about $300 more expensive pickups in it, so the Slash *really* should be a bit cheaper than the '59. Slash in Appetite Burst with the zebra pickups, or the November Burst are totally unique factory finishes though, and hard to resist.

Also the Indian laurel fretboard is great if you condition it because it's pretty dry upon arrival. Don't understand why some people don't like it. Same density as Rosewood just a bit lighter in color.

I love my 59! It's my main player. Sold my Gibson Les Paul Tribute Honeyburst because it isn't even close to how good the Epiphone feels to play. Epiphone is really putting out some outstanding guitars these days. Just got the Dave Grohl dg-335 and it's a close second to the 59. I played a few of the Slash ones and didn't like it as much.

I've come to the party a bit late on this one, I can't hear any appreciable difference between the two. The 59 has Gibson pickups, the Slash has Epi pickups made to Slash's over wound specifications. However the difference is the neck profiles so often overlooked, the 50s has a really fat neck, the 59 has a slimmer neck and the Slash has a slightly slimmer than the 59. If you have small hands like me these neck sizes matter and so worth mentioning.

I bought the 59 Les Paul by Epiphone and what an amazing guitar and case. My only criticism was scratchy frets, dry finger board and the aged satin look, the rest of it is faultless. I stripped the guitar down and levelled two frets, polished and oiled the finger board. As for the Maple top I used a well known scratch remover and buffed up the guitar, buffing by hand only took 30 mins and it returned to a high gloss and the triple A maple just popped. Re-strung with 9- 46 Hybrid strings and its a very playable instrument, it looks far better in gloss finish, in my opinion.
@cbusbrian
@cbusbrian 3 месяца назад
Thank you for your reply 😊 Surprised at the scratchy frets. Glad the fret ends weren’t sharp. The dry fret board seems to be universal across all guitars, at least the ones I have purchased, from high end to “low end”. I guess they “can’t” oil every guitar before it leaves the factory. I too buffed up the finish & the guitar looks 1000% better. Glad you you’re enjoying the ‘59. Great guitar.

It's difficult tell a difference when you only play power chords with distortion on frets 1 thru 5. I would have liked to hear clean tones and some sustain comparisons. Maybe some bends as well. You could have played a 99 dollar guitar and it would have sounded like the other two.
@cbusbrian
@cbusbrian 10 месяцев назад
Thank you for your reply. 😊 I don’t play with a lot of clean tones but maybe in the future I’ll include some for comparison. Thank you for the suggestion. I don’t think you watched the whole video. I do play some bends & lead licks.

The skully, the CTS pots, the orange drop capacitors, & the neck profile. I did a video called Slash Vs Slash where I put the Slash Gibson pick ups against the Epiphone Slash pick ups. Check it out. You might find it interesting.

The BB2 and BB3 are mislabeled. They are both BB1s . 7.8k/7.9k is a BB1. A BB2 is supposed to be 8.2K to 8.4k and a BB3 is supposed to over 8.5k in fact gibson lists the BB2 at 8.4 k and the BB3 at 8.7k .I have several BB3s that measure between 8.7k and 9k and Several BB2s 8.2k and over Obviously gibson is slapping BB2 and 3 labels on BB1s and sending to epi . I have seen many videos where epi 59s were put on the bunch and not once did the pickups outputs match the BB2 and 3. Same for the new epi 58 Korina Vs and explorers. One V had 2 BB1s and the the supposed BB2 in the neck was hotter then the supposed BB3 in the bridge .a BB3 is supposed to be the hottest of the bunch but it has less output then BB2 in the neck. The neck was 7.9k which is a BB1 and bride was 7.8k also a BB1 . That is why the BB3 sounds so bright in epis. The BB1 is meant for the neck it's too bright and thin for the bridge. The epi 58 explorer was a little better it at least had A BB2 in the bridge . The neck was 7.9k again a BB1 and the bridge was 8.1k which is a 2 . I have many sets of BB1 and BB2 as well As BB2 and BB3. Half are older and half are more recent and the older ones blow the newer ones away. It's like the newer Burstbuckers have been neutered . The older ones are not only hotter and more aggressive they are fatter sounding and have more clarity My theory is that because the BB1 is the Burstbucler gibson uses the least they are putting BB3 labels on them and shipping them to epi to get rid of them. They only use them in the neck of the standard 50s . They use the BB2 in the bridge of the standard 50s and for the neck pickup of the flying V and explorer and use the BB3 in the bridge of the V and explorer. So just to get rid of BB1s they label them 2 and 3 and send them to epi . Also the Burstbuckers that come in epi 59s are supposed to be non wax potted but I pulled a set out one of my epi 59 and took them apart to do magnet swaps and they were potted . So on top slapping BB2 and 3 labels on BB1s they are sending them potted BBs instead of non potted. Also the BB1s that come in the gbson USA standard 50s are wax potted so that is another clue they are just slapping BB2 and 3 labels on BB1s. Gibson just does seem to understand their customer Base . We expect accuracy and we check these things.

@cbusbrian Год назад
Interesting. If they are potted they might be BB Pros. I checked my output readings vs Gibson’s readings on their website & the website specs are 0.59 hotter for the neck & 0.79 hotter for the bridge. I check the specs for the Seymour Duncan Slash pick ups on their website verses my own & there was a 0.58 difference for the neck & 0.16 difference for the bridge. My Seymour Duncan Slash pick ups are: Neck- 7.72 Bridge- 8.74 My Gibson Slash-Buckers are: Neck- 8.06 Bridge- 8.44 I checked another RU-vid video for the same pickups & their readings were: Neck- 7.69 (0.37 less than mine) Bridge- 8.57 (0.13 higher than mine) Seymour Duncan website specs: Neck- 8.3 Bridge- 8.9 Gibson doesn’t list the output specs for the Slash-Buckers, or I just didn’t see it, but I found a website that listed them as such: Neck- 8.56 Bridge-8.92 I have two Seymour Duncan SH-4 pick ups one reads 15.25 & the other 14.96 Seymour Duncan website specs for the SH-4 bridge pick up is 16.6 So it appears that there are always variations of the output readings of pickups. I doesn’t appear that the readings are absolute. Perhaps environmental conditions effect the readings. As far as the Epiphone BB pickups being potted, I’m not tearing mine apart to find out lol.

Twins lol. Maybe I’ll call one Minneapolis & one Saint Paul lol Thank you for your comment 😊 I have 3 Harley Benton’s; SC-Custom in Honey Burst Flame, SC-500 Deluxe in Paradise Amber(these two were made in Vietnam) & an EX-76 Classic GHW (made in Indonesia). Great guitars. Love the Roswell pick ups in each. Harley Benton have only let me down once (-ish) The Paradise Amber I bought from the B-Stock (never buy B-stock) because they were discounting the finish. I had to replace the Pots & Capacitors because they just were not working properly. But on the plus side I dropped CTS pots & Orange drop capacitors in it & it sounds great. Which HB did you get? I’ve been eyeing the new SC-550 II’s

I owned 3 Harley benton Les Pauls and 2 SGs. Tried 5 different pickups, couldn't sell them fast enough. They were made Indonesia and Vietnam. My Epiphones are made much better, sound better, play better, and don't need to change pickups - sound great stock. Made in China rocks, so well made! As good as my Gibsons. The quality of the Harley Bentons were generic, slight flaws, rougher frets, poor setup, poor sound.

Great comparison. I'm looking at these two, along with the Epiphone Standard 60's. I worry that the 60's might sound a bit muddy (heard people say this a few times) maybe the pickups on these two guitars are worth the extra money.
