Episode 064: REACTION to BTS (방탄소년단) - Blue & Grey Lyrics 

This will be on my playlist like forever with Spring Day.

One thing about BTS is that the verses often offer multiple perspectives on the same theme. RM's verse here is reminiscent of his lyrics in his solo track Forever Rain. He mentions finding some sort of solace or kinship in the rain. Thus grey is a colour that he relates to a lot. I feel that when he says "Colourful words make me nervous / Wide grey areas put me at ease / Here there is the grey of a million faces", it speaks of him relating more to a life that is grey, to the point that platitudes feel uncomfortable. Both his mixtapes, RM and Mono, have had monochromatic cover art. And I felt that Jhope's lines about not being afraid are not so much about strength, but about being unable to react to situations as one should. If you don't react to a rhino charging towards you, it's dangerous. The term "gray rhino" comes from a book about financial risks. It refers to events wherein people do not notice an obvious threat, and thus fail to react to it. Jhope raps about the familiar feeling unfamiliar. Depression and anxiety tend to cloud how you see reality and react to it. Suga's verse echoes one from his track with Halsey named Suga's Interlude - "This wandering in which my head is only filled with the color blue... " as well as his mixtape track, People, where he questions why people call humans animals of wisdom when they are obviously animals of regret. He has been very open about his struggles with depression and social anxiety. A lot of their work showcases their individual thoughts about life, society and existence. Like you said, this song was originally intended for V's mixtape, but they all loved it so much, they decided to put it on the album. V penned it when he was at his lowest point. He had trouble sleeping, so he'd often visit the app Weverse, where we get to interact with them. He'd post and respond at odd hours to pass the time and feel better. This song was his way of channeling his feelings to create art, which in turn gave him a sense of accomplishment. He said that rather than meaninglessly saying "cheer up", he wanted this song to address these blue and grey emotions and let people who are feeling depressed know that he is in the same boat as them, and perhaps we could all see that we are not alone and get past it together.. As for reaching out for help, many people keep their struggles to themselves, but sometimes there is a silent reach or a hope that someone will realise that you need help even if you're putting up a mask. That mask makes it hard for others to understand that something is wrong, but we still hope that somehow someone will look past the mask and help you pick up the pieces. What I find tremendously beautiful and powerful about songs that tackle these struggles is, they really help do away with the stigma of mental health. It's something BTS has spoken about numerous times. They want the world to reach a point where we can say we are struggling as easily as we talk about a cold. Knowing that you are not alone is a big step in empowering people to admit when things are hard. Sorry, this turned into an essay like my comments often do 😬

Taehyung actually believes in angels and ask them for guidance alot, so him writing where is my angle says how much he was felling lost at the moment. Also the part at the end where he talks about sleeping at dawn, he stayed up till dawn many many days this year and he used to come to Weverse to talk to ARMY or to say he is feeling a writer block,,, The rapline wrote their parts (they always do) so each of them expressing the idea from their perspective, Namjoon is an atheist so he was saying his part from his perspective, he also referenced his song forever rain in his verse. The grey rhinos in J-hope's part is a physiological term. As for the blue question mark and animal of regret in Suga's part, he was referencing his (Suga's interlude ft. Halsey) where he talked about similar feelings and how humans are the only animals who feels regret and get stuck with the feeling. This song is one of my favourites in the whole BTS discography, so much depth and emotions, it's not easy for an artist to lay themselves bare to the fans with all of their struggles, but in doing so we felt that someone gets it someone know how it feels, it's not just us.

V wrote this after a burnout this last year. Thankfully he’s feeling a lot better recently and credits a lot of his healing to writing this song

ARMY the BTS MMA 2020 performance😭😭😭

Blue and grey was written by V in English for his coming mixtape, the song was then converted by him into Korean while the rapline added in their own lyrics. The members especially V were going through depression a few months ago and he expressed it throw this song. Same goes with Jins new song Abyss, he was doubting himself and saying he doesn't deserve what he's getting, also known as imposter syndrome. So he wrote Abyss after his burnout and released it on his birthday, I recommend you guys check it out

Suga have been dealing with depression since he was a kid in real life, real severe depression, not just having bad days but questioning if he should continue living. You can check out his song 'The Last' from his 2016 mixtape 'Agust D'. In that one he also mention being hit by the car in 2013 (2012?) thats when his shoulder were damaged and he now got the operation because of that.

Yes, Taehyung (V) wrote this song. The rappers added their own words for the rap parts. Taehyung had said he would try to release his mix tape by the end of the year. Since his bday is December 30, some are speculating that he’ll release it on his birthday or in early 2021. I’m really looking forward to it as he’d be the first vocalist to release his own mis tape and his love of music is so varied. He loves classical music and jazz. My favorite song from the album! Grey rhino metaphor refers to a threat that is obviously coming at you(in this case burnout and depression), but you don't take action about. It’s used often to describe catastrophes hand in hand (ironically) with the term ‘black swan’! Black swan theory describes an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect, and is often wrongly rationalized after the fact (i.e. in hindsight). Have for sure been there like V says in the closing verse where all the thoughts are swimming in your head all night creating insomnia until you fall asleep at dawn. And you’re in this emotional loop knowing you need to do something about it but feel paralyzed by the grey rhino charging at you.

Hey guys! One thing to take into account is that the members often sing from their own individual perspectives. So for example, maybe RM will rap about facing things a certain way while Jungkook sings about facing it differently. (This is more prominent when it comes to the rappers because they _always_ write their own raps, while the vocal line doesn't necessarily) And you were right! The song was written mostly by V and NIve (another singer-songwriter-producer) Oh! And as a note, I think this particular video that you watched had annotations, the *** next to some lines probably had an explanation in the description regarding the context, reference or wordplay

Blue and Grey and Jin's Abyss is my Fav 2020 songs. I know actually what they are saying and i have felt the same way. Jin is also my bias as i relate so much to him and what he does for his members. Feeling burnout sucks and feeling down when everyone else is happy around you kinda feel detached. Like you put on a mask and smile but you are really not ok inside. I really appreciate both of the songs and it felt like man I am not the only one.

So proud of my TaeTae, he wrote (aside from rap line parts), composed and produced this. Ps. Taehyung mentioned angels because he believes in angels and pray to them for all things. Then Joon has mentioned he's an atheist. Pps. A grey rhinoceros is an event that is high impact, highly probable but is neglected. And yes Hobi and Joon have a different take on how to deal with being "blue and grey" and the song definitely talks about knowing you're depressed, expressing it, hoping that you'll get over it and finally feeling relief that you expressed your pent up feelings. Ppps. The last line in that video is a bit incorrect. It should be "After secretly sending my words up into the air, Now I fall asleep at dawn, good night" it shows the relief of venting your emotions and now you can sleep because it's a burden off your chest.

thanks for the reaction ! 💜 basically Blue & Grey means an emotional journey where the boys sing about experiencing anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation during the pandemic. V wrote the chorus and melody but the vocal rap is written by the rap line themselves. This song was supposed to be on V's mixtape, but after Jk heard this song, he pushed V to send it to the producers and let the other members hear his song. So in the end, they've decided to put V's song in the album because of the theme itself that suits the theme of their BE album. Another fact, this was written by V in full English so with the help of the rap line members and the producers they've translated some parts into Korean.

V originally wrote an all English version of this he was going to put on his solo mixtape, but the group really liked it so he rewrote it for all of them. You can here some of the original in an episode of In The Soop that aired over the Summer. The grey rhinoceros represents depression. RM is actually an atheist; he has sad so in a couple interviews.

My favorite part that ties this song all together for me is the pulsing heart sound in the music. To me that signifies that even though we are down and sad our "Heart" still beats. This is my favorite track from the album. Glad you guys listened to it.

One of the things I like about BTS's lyrics is that the rappers all write their own parts, so they will write about the same situation or subject but from different perspectives. In this song V wrote the rest of the lyrics. Most often RM writes the lyrics for the vocalists, although they all have input into what they want to express. Sometimes their thoughts are very different so you get an unusual song dynamic that doesn't really occur in most songwriting. In answer to your question about the grey rhino: black swan and grey rhino are both economic terms. A black swan event is a highly improbable, unforeseeable event that has a dramatic effect. A grey rhino is a known risk that people choose to ignore despite its potential to happen.

Gray rhino refers to a risk factor that society can recognize and fully anticipate due to constant warning, but is easily overlooked. The rhinoceros is so large that the ground shakes when running. It's easy to see that the rhino is running. I know it's dangerous to bump into a rhino. This can be expected, and the impact is great in the event of an accident, but a situation where neglect and risk of out of control is called a 'gray rhino'. It was known after first mentioning at the Davos Forum in January 2013 by the head of the World Policy Institute Michelle Booker. The gray rhino is a term compared to the Black Swan, which is extremely unlikely to occur and is difficult to predict and contrast, but once it appears, it causes a large impact. This expression stems from the discovery of black swan in Australia, breaking the notion that swan is white.

I like how Chalfant pointed out the reflection and the ending of the song. Gray Rhinoceros was being connected to depression. Like your in a room staring with it. I'm an economics person... And to me Black swan and gray rhino are familiar terms that mean opposite things. BTS' word play always leaves me in awe. Black swan: a threat that no one expects but causes a lot of damage (like the pandemic) Gray Rhino: a threat that is plain for all to see but is ignored until it's too late (like the 2008 crisis)

I'm not sure if Blue really is the represntation of depression. Because blue is also associated with calmness. Those who mostly had a hard time sleeping or suffering from insomia be it a human or animal would get treated by sometimes using blue light when it's time to sleep. And most of the time, those who couldn't fall asleep were able to get a good time sleeping. Tho it doesn't work all of the time, but light cases are doable. Also, thank you for reacting to B&G 💜 This album really is special to me, not that the rest are not. But in days like this where we also suffer and feel the same because of this unfortunate world crisis. The songs doesn't give you the wishy washy words you want to hear that lacks sincerity but genuine comfort and hug you needed. The factual realization and embrace is what these songs help me realize and accept.

glad you picked up on RM's verse. the better translation is: *_"Certainty is not a god i believe in"_* this is a play on the korean word for certainty/confidence/confirmation, Hwak-Shin. "Shin" by itself can mean god but it's a HOMONYM to literally ~50 other words that sound the same but has a different meaning. it all depends on the context of use of the word and to which other word it's attached to. - this is where korean gets confusing. the language itself is VERY contextual and often one word may sound like one thing but it means something totally different in context.

Grey rhinoceros is a metaphor for depression. Hobi is saying that he staring at the grey rhinoceros coming towards him unmoving and unfocused. He's helpless to get away from its path or escape it on his own but he's not scared at the same time , maybe because he's not feeling anything atall, since depression it self is a daze. RM's part won't make sense until you listen to his solo song "forever rain". In that song he says he wish for it to rain all the time because that's the only time his surrounding reflects his mood,also relating to a depressive/meloncholy mental state. So dancing on top of rooftops when it rains is not necessarily a good/positive thing.

This is my favorite song from the BE album. Although the lyrics are sad it is really comforting to me. V wrote this song while he was going through a tough time and originally it was in English and going to be on his mix tape but after the members heard it they wanted it for the album and so he reworked it to change some to Korean and the rap line added their own verses. He played part of the original during their show In The Soop and the English lyrics were even more devastating. I really hope he puts the English version on his mixtape still although I doubt it will happen....I am really looking forward to the release of his mixtape. V's voice is so relaxing and comforting to listen to I just know it will be something I will listen to all the time.

When I heard the words grey rhinoceros it reminded me of the book, "James and the Giant Peach," in which Jame's Aunts keep telling him that the great rhino had taken his parents away. This consumes James and he becomes scared and is threaten daily that this pretend rhino is going to end his life as well. This means to me the rhinoceros being any bad feelings or the storm inside your self taking over you and attacking your self-esteem. Which can bring you down until the depression defeats you and swallows oneself up. This is what I got from this lyrics.

Yup you were right mostly Tae wrote this, with the goal to normalize talking about mental health issues, showing he himself struggles. Maybe to some context...Tae lost a in the last few years few people that were very close to him - grandmom (who raised him), later his friend commited suicide and then his grandpa died...I belive his mixtape will be probably a way of him expressing the pain he went through and how he dealt with it as he seems to be doing better these months.

The first time I heard a lil of Blue and Gray was V singing it in their show In The Soop. The ending lyrics 'I fall asleep at dawn, goodnight' was my breaking point because that's just a hit in the face of reality. Although the album was released around the pandemic, the songs can be related to so many situations. Thank you for this reaction. I believe the line about exit meant that he hopes it doesn’t consume him and he gets out of it. That’s the exit. I don’t think intend the other meaning in this setting. I may be mistaken, but I always thought of the lyric "A grey rhinoceros coming toward me. I stand with unfocused eyes, all alone" in the sense that when you are depressed you can feel numb toward things in life. Like you see a huge problem coming (rhino) but you feel numb towards it and do not\can not care about getting out of the way.

Something I've noticed lately, anytime someone or yourself will ask how you are or they are, most times its a "meh". Most times you get a yeah I get it back. And that's it. It's all you needs to hear because you don't want to get into it and now topic is closed. And the "Yeah I get it" is mostly because everyone seems to be in the same boat. No one is okay right now. I see a lot of comments said bts members include theit perspective in their lines. So when Namjoon/RM said he does not believe in god, he was talking about his idea. But when V said 'angel' Taehyung was talking about his idea. Taehyung as a person does not believe in god, but he believes in angels, he mention this on multipal occassion. You might see him praying or asking helps from his angels. He believe they exist and helps him to win sometimes. Not that it was important, but thought I should drop a comment about this. Like your reaction and effort you put in to understand bts's music.

SUGA has a line about having a Blue Question Mark since he was a child. That references his depression he's dealt with all his life. That one resonated with me. The whole album is about their feelings and perspective during the pandemic. An amazing album that should have gotten more recognition from The American Music Industry. V did write this song for his mixtape, and English version, but when he shared it with the members, they loved it so much and wanted to include it on the album. so it went through some edits, and additions. We don't know if he will include an English version on his mixtape. J Hope's part I took to mean that even though he sees the danger coming at him, he's not afraid of it, which is unlike him. RM's part I look at as he already deals with depression and has accepted it as part of his life or himself, and has learned to embrace it. I'm not sure if I am correct in my interpretation, but he has songs that I love that talk about this, like Forever Rain, and MoonChild. Bicycle is another one. The pandemic has his everyone in different ways, but it has brought mental health out in the open. I hope we get some positive changes because of it. A Gray Rhino is a term used to define a danger that is slow moving, obvious and yet conveniently ignored. Somewhat of an opposite of a Black Swan. Its argued that the Climate Crisis is one such event. Black swan is an unpredictable event that is beyond what is normally expected of a situation and has potentially severe consequences. Black Swan events are characterized by their extreme rarity, severe impact, and the widespread insistence they were obvious in hindsight.

It's Jin I feel more concerned about right now - I get the strongest feeling that he isn't okay. This is partly due to "Abyss", but also more than that. The way he looked at the MMA and at MAMA during the award presentations. They swept the board, and I don't think I saw him smile even once.

With their songs at least the rappers always write their own parts. So what the lyrics say is what they say. With this song. It was originally v mixtape song. It was adapted to include everyone. I’m not sure what what degree the lyrics were changed to fit everyone and what they all felt. They want it to be representative of them as a group and are not afraid to change lyrics if needed to be genuine. The raps were added for sure. Jin said he listened to the song a lot before the raps were added

The gray rhino is a metaphor for missing the big, obvious thing that’s coming at you. And the important part is that it gives you a choice. Either you get trampled or you get out of the way, or you hop on the back of the rhino and use the crisis as an opportunity.

When Jhope says “I’m just not scared” I’ve wondered if it’s because he’s at that point where he just doesn’t care anymore, so he just doesn’t even feel fear either anymore. Just doesn’t feel anything. He said he stands with unfocused eyes, like he is so lost that he doesn’t pay attention to the things around because of how down he is. The grey rhino could maybe just represent the depression that is about to hit him hard.

Blue and Grey is truly amazing! I've been watching all of ur videos all day, you guys are funny. For example, since Chalfant you are a school principal, I challenge you to guess what the tracks "Whalien 52" and "134340" are about; Here's what you need to know about this track: « Blue & Grey » - written and composed by V, RM, Suga, JHope, Hiss Noise, Ji Soo Park, Levi and Metaphor - is a guitar ballad that tells the story an artist’s burn-out. I think the god that is certainty part is a play on words. I think I read somewhere that the word god and the word certainty are essentially homophones? RM has stated in the past that he is not a follower of any particular religion, but he has also made references to god. If I had to guess, I'd say he is probably agnostic.
