I love that they use the original black and white manga art style for this. They even went with the yellow subtitles, maan elder weaboos and otakus like me are crying right now. Those yellow subtitles and fonts has a significant history with the early anime being shown both online and tv during the early 2000s.

Fun fact: the yellow subtitles seem to be an american thing. Being german, I was always used to white font with black outlines. If it wasn't outright dubbed to begin with.

Junji's shock panels are drawn in meticulous detail, often *too* much detail, thousands of little lines all coming together to create some horrible texture of a living form. Filling in all the space with a flat color really kills his aesthetic delivery.

God that lineart is making my wrist hurt and I mean that as a compliment. So much detail and it doesn't look like mush. That's wicked impressive but given how long it took those artists had to have been putting a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this. You don't bust your butt making something look this good unless its out of love for the source material.

Though I really wanted to point out how Kirie actually took Azami to meet Shuichi at his home instead of the station. And how he yelled at her to leave at once. And the next time they met, it was again at his home and he pointed out her spiral scar. I don't hate this improvisation in the anime tho, I honestly really love it. This might be much more expressive and impactful fr.

In reality, rotoscoping takes more time and effort and is deliberately made to be a stylistic choice. It's not cheap at all. The quality is pretty much like a movie. It's unusual to see cinematography and animation that smooth in a tv series. Also the atmosphere and feeling is so perfectly crafted. It started with silence daily life and then get more tense as uzumaki appears.

There were so many negative and pessimistic comments about the anime in the last trailer. "The CGI looks terrible!," "Junji Ito was bought out for this anime..," "This isn’t real animation." But this short clip shows how much potential this anime has, and simultaniously mollifies the arguments all those haters had. I'm looking forward to the first episode's premiere.

The thing I love most about the animation is how still it can be. Azami, for example, doesn't move as much as much as everyone else and there are even frames when her model freezes in place, like the shots of her forehead. Not only does this emulate the manga's style, but it also makes her come off as off-putting, especially when compared to the others. This makes sense because she's been infected by the spiral.

It's rotoscoped. There was no cgi in this clip. Rotoscoping means first filming the footage with real actors and then drawing over that footage frame by frame.

@@Shivam-vr6eh fyi Rotoscope is different from CGI. Yes the movement is weird but it fits the narrative and its atmosphere. Same as Aku no Hana, both of them are Uncanny valley. Unlike Aku no Hana, this one referenced from the original. It makes sense why it took 4 yrs to animate.

I kinda like that it’s rotoscoped, makes it look uncanny. It reminds me of Aku no hana in that way :)

idk why but the anime's choice to not color it in really works well here.. it really captures Junji Ito's style to its fullest, and brought the visuals of the source material to life, without relying on color!
