After getting a new MOT sorted, it was time to give the Swedish workhorse some fresh oil, plus a new oil filter and air filter. However, as you'll see, the Volvo's undertray would not come off properly, making a simple job very awkward.

Another couple of tips. Always oil the O-rings, never put them on dry. There are torque settings for oil filter housings, but if not possible I just go hand tight. Should really replace the crush washer on the sump plug every time. Use a torque wrench on wheel nuts/lugs and sump plugs. Always wear some decent nitrile gloves when handling contaminated oil. Otherwise, jobs a pigs ear...lol..jk

The black plastic that you unscrewed can be removed together with the undertray, it's just really tight. You need to push it towards the back of the car

Ah. Nice one. Thank you. The only thing I'm thinking about still is whether I would have had capacity to screw back those front three screws if I got them out when taking off the front plastic and undertray. Considering they were all spinning, I might have had an issue. Oh well. Lol.

Hi, asking for advice do u think it would be possible for the oil sump to get dented and damaged and have a leak with the under tray on? Or do u think the undertray would have to be off?
@jimmykneesall
@jimmykneesall 2 месяца назад
Hello mate. Honestly, I think these undertrays are a nuisance. They might stop some dirt getting onto the bottom of the engine, but that's about it. I think they get in the way of everything you want to get access to. I think my video is a case in point, especially with those spinning screws. If it's made of thin plastic, it ain't going to be strong enough to stop any dents. A proper metal sump guard would do that job, as that's what they're designed for. So, to answer your question, I reckon dents would occur if it was on or off, simply because of how thin and flexible the plastics are. Do you know if it's definitely the sump where your leak is coming from?
@82seabiscuit
@82seabiscuit 2 месяца назад
@@jimmykneesall yep. I was told by a mechanic who recently serviced it for a different problem that the sump was damaged and dented. I hadn't had any issues before it's last service. But since the oil pressure lamp comes on intermittently. He said it's weird that they would not have seen the damage at the service and that it's coincidence the error is only since then. The engine was lifted at service to change the cam belt. Just wondering if it could have been dropped as I definitely haven't run over anything. All a bit puzzling and frustrating.

@@82seabiscuit Seems it. Is the undertray damaged or scratched in the area where the dent is on the sump?

Please wear gloves next time! Thanks for the video - think I'll check those panel bolts all move before I buy the other bits I need!
@jimmykneesall
@jimmykneesall Год назад
HaHa. Nothing wrong with a bit of oil under the nails. 🤣 I find the gloves annoying. They rip too easily when you catch them on sharp edges. Glad you liked the video anyway. Yeah, those panel bolts were an utter pig. Apparently, people have found ways to get them out when they spin, but I didn't have the time to mess about too much that day, as I needed to get the car sorted before I picked up Reggie. Hope you get yours sorted. Keep me posted. 👍

Thanks very much matey. Appreciate that. It was a good car for the time that my missus had it. If your hasn't had it's interior mirror glass fall off, or a suspension spring snap, be prepared! Lol! Joking aside, hope you enjoy yours pal. Cheers.
@jasonkemp9396
@jasonkemp9396 Год назад
Not sure why you didn't just drill the heads off those screws.
@jimmykneesall
@jimmykneesall Год назад
Hi Jason. The main reason I didn't do that was because I didn't know if the fixings behind the screws were badly broken. What I didn't want to do was risk damaging them further and then not have anything to screw the undertray back into once I'd finished. Whilst they were obviously spinning, they were at least still keeping the front of the undertray attached. Just not ideal for the job I needed to do. Haha! Thanks for your comment though. 👍
@jasonkemp9396
@jasonkemp9396 Год назад
@@jimmykneesall Whatever the fixings, either tinnerman clips or often nylon inserts, you can always sort it afterwards. Even if you have to drive around a few days with the cover off. My XC70 P2 never had a cover since I had it. I wonder whether they are that necessary to be honest.
@jimmykneesall
@jimmykneesall Год назад
@@jasonkemp9396 Thanks Jason. Yeah, neither of my cars have these undertrays, althought they are a lot older. I guess they are there to protect the engine if you were to run over a tall speed bump, etc. Pass. 😆

A simple task made much more difficult by an undertray where you also have restricted movement under the car. Also cars that have the oil filter hanging down under the engine creates a mess as well. Enjoyed the video and felt your pain. I am lucky enough to have the oil filter on my car on top of the engine and with no undertray to remove either.
@jimmykneesall
@jimmykneesall 9 месяцев назад
Thank you mate. Yeah, not the easiest of tasks, although without all the faff, it IS an easy task! HaHa! Our Capri was certainly far easier than this, although I suspect the simple tasks on most modern cars are a bit more time-consuming with all the bits to remove to gain access. Is that E30 in your picture yours mate?
@bmw-e30
@bmw-e30 9 месяцев назад
@@jimmykneesall It is Jimmy and have it nearly 30 years. The sump plug faces outwards and the oil filter sits on top of the engine so an oil change can be done without jacking the car up or indeed getting your hands dirty. The Volvo v40 is the only modern car that I actually like hence the interest.

@@bmw-e30 That's awesome mate. Sounds dead easy. I do like the E30's. All of the BMW's around that time looked great. We don't have the Volvo now, as you probably saw. I didn't think it was particularly good-looking, but to drive, couldn't fault it. Very comfy, especially over bumpy ground, and had a lot of nice in-car features. Did a couple of other videos of fixing other bits on it too. 😁
