I decided to prune the lavender during the winter time so I can have more time doing other stuff when spring arrives. Let me know what you think I should do with that thick back brand on the right side! #bonsai #lavender #bonsaitree
Pruning by Dr. Xin will really give this little tree some nice spring growth. Some really good branch structure being developed. A great video Xin. Time for a cup of tea.
@@MaybeBonsai I think I would leave it on until the tree starts to grow really well, then if the surrounding branches look strong, cut it back or remove it!
One cool tree with a cool looking trunk. I have a couple outside in the microclimate to see if they survive the winter in the small pots. Really a cool looking tree.
Daggum, this lavender is awesome, Xin. Great pruning job as well. You’ve got it set up really nice for the upcoming growing season. Have you thought about a ground layering to fix the reverse taper at the bottom? As for your quandary on the top, I suggest leave it be until it starts growing again and see what new branching comes in. Possible get a better replacement, or possibly adjust the front a couple degrees. Just the 2 cents of a knuckle-dragging yeti though. You’ve been making all the right decisions so far, so trust your gut, brother.
Thanks Billy, I will wait until it is growing then make a decision about the branch. Turning the front will help but I will always know that branch is there lol. I am not sure if ground layer would work on this thing since it is not a true tree. I will look it up!
Love that trunk!! Great endresult. I would take that top part off and go with your suggestion, i.e. cut the top and wire that side branch in a slightly better angle. Let the bees come in summer 🙂
Beautiful Lavender good structure that trunk is nice! Got a question does it do well in a unheated garage during the winter months ? I heard they can be indoors as well under growlights . I have doneca rosemary as bonsai twice and they didn't survive inside . I'm doing a rosemary again and this time I have it in a cold frame and it is doing well. I am going to get me Lavender and give it a try too.
I keep mine in an unheated garage, I have done this for 2 years now. Cold frame will do the same trick, bury the pot if you can. This was initially grown in the garden. I am not sure if dormancy is needed or not but it doesn’t hurt for it to have it and you will have more room for tropicals indoors in the winter, hope this helps 👍
Don’t chop it off Xin, that’s a beautiful ancient looking tree that doesn’t need to conform to ‘rules’! You already gave it a really radical pruning! Don’t emulate Nigel too closely, or your head might end up looking like a 🍍! God bless you 🙏✝️ ✌️🇷🇺☮️🇺🇦✌️
hahaha no no my hair would never get like that. I keep them short at all times 🤣 I haven’t done anything with that branch, will wait until the tree is growing and re-evaluate 👍
