The BBC have used all kinds of microphones since the advernt of radio 1, so this video shows some examples. Oddly, Radio 1, 2, 3 and 4 have different favourites - so currently, Radio 1 and 2 seem to favour Neumann, while radio 3 and 4 feature AKG - Radio 4 also like Beyer. I started my research in the 70s - with the AKG 202, and you can hear a little of each one. I've also tried each one with two versions of compression. I discovered that many people don't actualy know what compression sounds like - so I picked a mild and extreme version of each. Back in the analogue, AM radio days, compression was pretty vital. I'm not pretending either of the versions is suitable for radio now of course, but at least you can hear what it does.

I remember the location team on the late 90s City Hospital program leaving their trolley in one of corridors at work (I work for a local hospital Trust). I had the opportunity of looking in there several times as I passed, they obviously felt nobody would touch it and trusted us staff not to (obviously I never touched, just looked as a curious musician). I remember a couple of shotgun mics, but the c414 took my attention the most - it being one of my dream mics at the time due to being a Queen fan.

Ah, the good old AKG D202, wonderful microphone, wish I'd never sold mine. Glad I've still got my Beyer DT100 headphones, though, although as I prefer the cable on the left side, I had to rewire the plug to keep left and right in the proper places..!

Great fun - nice demo of compression. I DO hear a difference with and without the foam pop filter, it has ever so little bit more air and treble without it. But, not significant, just a slight difference to my ears. Too bad the condensers microphones capture so much low frequency hum and ambient noise. I guess that is a difference between dynamic and condenser style mics. This does not, however, diminish the demonstration of how compression works. I completely agree modern stations do not need compression, but they seem to overdo it anyway to take advantage of the added excitement and energy compression adds - you should hear a Mexican radio station in the US or Mexico ... WOW they go way over the top with excessive compression, often adding reverb and other effects - which of course sounds terrible! And yet, I agree with your assessment compression is not needed, even though they still use it! Happy trails, old man. Cheers and lotsa luck. TT

That was very interesting, thank you for the effort! I learned about the M201 the first time, i did not know about it before. Especially as i like Radio 4s Sound. The concept of a dynamic mic in a condenser mics clothes....i like that.

Cheers - the headphones are Beyer DT100. Really good at keeping sound out and in, and totally repairable. Theyre a rather unflattering headphone - so what you hear is what it is. Very common ins studios. they do headset versions as well

@@pauljohnson4590 There is also the DT150 version which has a lower bass response, but to be honest I've never really noticed much difference. I love that as you say they're totally repairable, the parts are easily available and easy to fit. Although in 20 years all I've ever done with mine is replace the foam inserts a couple of times, and the headband once, when it got accidentally ripped.
