Hey Rick! Enjoyed your recounting those great playoff series. Those rivalries between teams like the Yankees and the Royals were something else. I remember when they brought the camera in to talk to Brett. I thought that was so bush league. You leave the guy alone at a moment like that. Anyway, I love the series and playoff cards you featured. That Koufax card is one of my favorite cards of all time. It was great when they featured every game of the series and playoffs the way they used to. I'm not a big fan of the 1971 cards though. But I love the '68. '69. and '70. If they started making playoff cards of every game played now, the subset alone would reach 720 cards, lol. Hey, just in case you aren't aware, Battersbox is having another one of their discount sales! All the best - Gannon
Great topic Rick, I think in today's baseball with all the wild card teams it is a lot harder to win a championship. I think todays playoffs diminishes the value of winning your division a bit. Back in the 70's and 80's there were some great playoff series that were fun to watch especially with a trip to the World Series on the line!
Hi Rick, I enjoyed hearing your playoff and World Series memories. Other than 1980, I was too young to remember the Royals and Yankees series. 1980 is one I would like to forget, but it didn’t sting too hard because I was still pretty young at the time. Nice group of cards to commentate those series. The 64 Koufax is a beauty. If that image was on his regular card from that year, collectors would be clamoring for it. The series cards don’t have the same cache. I saw Rocket Rick commenting on the Mantle. It is likely game 2 or 7. The Mick looks like he swung and missed. You can see McCarver putting his other hand on his mitt to hold the ball. It is definitely Gibson on the mound. That’s awesome the 75 Joe Rudi brings back childhood memories of your friend from Little League. I would love to know why they change how many playoff cards they put in a set. That and other decisions would be a fun interview to listen to. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Rick, loved the video and thanks for the shout-out! Topps was notoriously lazy when making their cards, using photos from the wrong games on the WS cards. The Mantle card you showed in 1964 has a photo from game 7, not game 3. The funny thing is that this was the only hit that Mantle ever got off of Gibson. The Brooks Robinson card photo (out in the desert..and one of my favs by the way) was actually from game 3, not 5. Anyway, those series in the 70's were a blast to watch as a kid. A lot of back and forth, and it was always fun back then to watch the Royals and Yankees go at it. Have a great weekend my friend.
Hey Mike! your video brought back so many memories of growing up at Dodger Stadium. I wouldn't change that for anything in the world. Both you and RocketRick brought up the Mantle card, I did not know that! Brooks is from game 3? Damn, you're right, Topps was lazy ass!! I am sure we'll be chirping back and forth during game 5 in a few. Enjoy!
Hopefully Terry @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648 comments! I just showed the 1964 WS Game 3 card in a video. In addition to the pitcher “looks” like Bob Gibson, note Mickey wearing the road gray uniform with “New York” across his chest. Game 3 was played in Yankee Stadium and Mantle’s. Game 3 homer in the 9th was a “walkoff” which can only happen to the home team. I loved these cards, especially from the 1961-1971 sets. I graduated from HS in 1970 and watched or listened to every one of those games! You are so right about the memories! Thanks Rick!
Rick, I never knew about the Mantle card until you and Mike The Sports History Collector brought it to my attention. Topps was just lazy! I remember not liking the post season games during the day but I did have some teachers that would let us watch if the game started at 1pm local time. Such a fun era! Thanks so much for watching, Rick!
This is such a legendary trip down memory lane with stops at those grand postseason moments! I know a lot of us crabby old-timers refer to 1968 as the last "real" World Series, but the game always changes, and hell, my Red Sox won four times under the new format. As an aside, the 1960 Topps card of 1959 game 6, "Scrambling after Ball." has been voted the worst Topps World Series card of all time. What, they couldn't get a shot of Larry Sherry, the hero of the Series?
Michael, I didn't know about game 6, I didn't know that is considered the worst World Series card ever. I should have show it! HAHAHA! I miss the 70's and 80's playoff format, but I realize the game has to evolve. It's always fun looking back. Thanks so much for watching!
Great stuff Rick i have very few of those but I do have the 60 dodgers with wills and the 69 bob gibson card that is in the 300 greatest cards by mike Payne. Remember there's a 1960 Bell brand Maury Wills. Go Dodgers talk to you later today
Jesse! I have my Dodger cap on and ready for game 5! I think I do have a Bell Brand card of Wills. I forgot about that one. Thank you for watching! Go Dodgers!
