Very interesting to see all steps in details. This video got me a little worried with all the wires and hoses but I still plan on doing the whole process with my car thanks to you.
I really enjoy watching your video's. Brings back a lot of memories. Almost two years ago I finished my full nuts and bolts restauration on my 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo. Best part was building the car back up with as many new parts I could get my hands on. I even managed ti buy a brand new engine block from Porsche. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing!
Russ, thank you very much for today’s video, it was very interesting to see how it comes out the bottom as not having a lift, I had to take mine out the top. Seems about the same amount of work either way, as I did not have to dismantle the suspension and steering, but I had to remove the mounts attached to the block, and the exhaust manifolds, coolant pipe, and aos whichever was additional work for me. I have a 1988 951, and my car has plastic wheelhouse liners which your car doesn’t have(maybe they are missing like the lower service panels). I think the reason your cam tower and oil panel are painted is because those casting have a lot of surface defects in them. In fact, some of the surface defects are so bad that I thought mine was cracked and purchased a second hand and found it had the exact same defects. After a lot of sanding by hand, I was able to clean up both castings and polish them to a very high finish. The cam timing covers are better castings with fewer casting defects, but you still have to do a lot of hand work to polish them also.
Taking engine out the bottom is the way to go, Russ did it the hard way. You do not need a lift. Use the cherry picker that you used to lift the engine and raise the car with it instead. Put the engine on a dolly, roll under car, lower car, bolt 4 bolts fir crossmember in, 2 bolts at the end of control arms on each side, 4 bolts on top of shock towers on each side and the 2 bolts on each side for sway bar mounts. This is all it takes to install the engine with ALL the accesories, turbo, crossover pipe, down pipe, steering rack, wiring harness - basically everything. I am getting too old to bend over, crawl under the car to remove or install things. This way everything is removed/installed with the engine out of the car - much easier then bending, crawling. It took me 15 minutes to install the complete engine, suspension, clutch, harness, exhaust etc.
Great job! Keep going on. Btw: the covered connector is for the instrument cluster > oil pressure control lamp, battery, oil level and so on...Greatings from Germany
Could be electralysis/corrosion prevention on the grounding...amongst other electron issues realating to various components...and the more metal to ground to
Great video!👍How much would the rough cost be to do an engine swap? I wish I was near you, but unfortunately I am in Los Angeles? Any shops you would recommend near me? I have purchased a donor 951 with a freshly rebuilt engine to swap from. Appreciate your advice.
Hard to say, sometimes things go well, and other times...ugh. seals and gaskets, fluids, maybe a new clutch. You could be between $2500, $3500. If the car was here, we would make a new video series with that and give you a nice discount
@@EuropeanAutoCraftStudios Thanks for the reply. I would take you up on your offer in a heartbeat if I was local. Thank you for all the videos and walkthroughs. As a 951 owner, It helps a ton and your genuine approach, experience and knowledge is awesome. Look forward to more Porsche 944 content.
Wiring will be interesting. I'm wondering if it's the same as my 87. I have a Porsche shop manual but it doesn't include wiring diagrams. Keep up the good work, and treat yourself to a new impact!
@chris I have all the factory shop manuals and for my ‘88, the wiring diagrams are in volume 5:electrics. Early production ‘88’s were same as 87, mid-year 88 production has some changes.
The only difference in engine harness is the one wire that goes to the oil level sensor on '87+ models. If you look online you should be able to download all the factory shop manuals along with the factory PET (parts manual)
