The BEST video editing in any of the “mix tutorials” on RU-vid. Also, obviously, some of the best tips, tricks and tutorials. More, and more frequently PLEASE!!!
Thank you so much for this comment! As soon as I get to certain point I’m going to hire someone to help me with the videos so I can make them more frequently. Right now it’s just me and it’s takes time to edit them.
Among Underoath fans, this record is surprisingly not as well loved. I liked it, but if you take a journey back through their discography, you’ll find some really really cool stuff too.
@@ElegiesAus I’m a fan of Underoath and I liked it a lot. Some people want a band to sound one way from the start of their career to the end. I believe a band should go wherever their creativity takes them.
From a longtime UO fan. This is a good song. If you're just getting started with Underoath "Lost in the Sound of Separation" is an awesome starting ground.
We’re hella lucky, Ken could have just been an engineer and hid out.. no Failure, no videos. Dude had shared his gift and these videos are so awesome. And he does the most important thing, learns what the band is after first and he gets them there with his gifted mind. Awesome video dude! We all think the world of you keep em coming :)
Hi Ken!! A big fan of yours from Italy (Failure, Replicants, Lusk!!, Year Of The Rabbit, Ken Andrews & Digital Noise Academy) : ) THANK YOU for letting me know about such a MASTERPIECE like Underoath - Erase Me with wich I'm now TOTALLY IN LOVE !!!! Keep up the great things you do and congrats again for one of the greatest comeback in music history like you (and Greg & Kelly) did with FAILURE - THE HEART IS A MONSTER which is absolutely KILLER !!
My goodness I just discovered your channel Ken! As a "home" and previous struggling musician-prodcuer-engineer (but what a blast! LA in the 90s!) this is very exciting to find all these videos of yours! ty!
been looking forward to this one. I actually bought my first slate plugins after your latest video, and the tape / console emulations are on everything now. thanks for the great stuff Ken!
Talk about getting it right at the source… wow! Great video. I usually feel more like a plastic surgeon rather than a sculpting artist when it comes to the tracks I get sent lol
These videos are excellent! Would love to see an episode on how you handle gain staging, I see in some videos you use a VU meter would love some insight into this!
Hearing Ken go into the specifics of the keys is just so damn cool to me. Maybe I've been looking in the wrong places but I haven't found a lot of in depth talk about how the keyboards have been mixed into a full on rock/metal track, and hearing Ken Andrews of all people dive into the topic is such an ideal combination. On a side note, maybe it's just me but I feel like the On My Teeth instrumental transitions seamlessly into the Distorted Fields outro.
Incredibly complex mix, incredible stuff man. Love it. One thing I'm noticing is how all of the tracks you have for the guitars and keyboards are all so "brickwalled" off level wise. At least they look that way on the meters.
Yes, that’s normal for guitars with a lot of distortion. Heavy distortion will flatline your waveform faster than heavy compression. Keyboards are also fairly distorted and mangled on this song, so yes, not a whole lot of dynamics in the individual tracks for this song, but that’s the vibe here. Everyone on 11 for the whole thing!
Ken I just stopped by to say Solar Eyes is the best song you've ever produced. Me and my wife have listened to it on a long drive like 5 times in a row. You were really on one.
Great presentation and super informative! I would pay top dollar for a masterclass of this for Failure’s (or any of your projects) future sessions. Thanks!
Love your work Ken! I only recently discovered you and Failure a few years back and I've been hooked ever since! I absolutely love watching these videos and will continue to do so, but I was wondering if you, or any of your followers could please point me in the direction of somebody as nearly as cool as you, that does almost the exact style of videos as yours, but using Logic Pro X instead? Because I have allot to learn and very little money and I only have Logic. Thanks in advanced please keep doing what you're doing! I'm learning allot! Cheers.
Yes, I usually try a couple and see if anything hits me. Currently I'm using the SSL Native Buss Comp because I got one of the SSL UC-1 controllers. But I do pretty much always have an SSL style buss comp on the st buss.
@@KenAndrewsMusic I demod the Native and regret not picking it up when it was on sale.. will definitely be getting it the next opportunity. And thanks for the content!
So valuable. The mix is so good. But, man, when there's only one person making music - I can never get so much complexity in one song just by myself... Well.. I hope to get someone involved, I guess.
Find people online to work with. People who are into similar music. Pass ideas forward and back, and work out parts together. I happened to get in touch with a guy by chance, and his recordings really made my at the time mediocre song into a really good one! He came up with the chorus, bridge and outro, he put in guitars and synths that sound great and fit the song very well. It's worth a shot. I mean, I don't know if I could do that for you, or anyone, but I do know that when I'm listening to music, especially for the first time, I have a feeling and a sense of where it could, or even should go.
if our ears perceive sound in stereo phonic surround naturally. is their really ever such a true thing as hearing in mono? or is this a masking trick of our stereo phonic surround ears?
So you’d give the “thumbs up” on quad tracking the rhythm guitars? I know some producers/mixers hate it, but I’ve always thought it sounded great. When planning the 4, are you planning two of them slightly more inward than the other two that are hard panned, or just all 4 hard panned?
On this song I’m pretty sure all 4 were hard panned but that’s not a rule I use. I will audition different pannings and see what feels good. Often it’s more about how it’s affecting the other instruments.
@@KenAndrewsMusic thank you for the reply, sir. I would also like to inquire on this as well- are you doing any kind of “widening” with the guitars as far as using a stereo imager, or it is just hard panned left and right and then maybe a little “room” and EQ on a bus? I’d really be interested to know about this albums guitars and the JEW song “pass the baby” toward the end. Thanks for doing these!
I would rather show you how I use them and why I like them rather than put up a shopping list. If you watch all the videos I think I’ve discussed around twenty of my favorites already and how I use them.
I would love to hear this song with just vocals, bass, drums and guitar. But I appreciate all the work that went into the added sounds. Stupid question: Doesn't it get to a point where you can't fit everything in? I feel like all those sounds get buried in the mix just to let the actual song breathe. No?
Yes, sometimes not every sound can be independently appreciated, for sure. Rather they play a more supportive role. All the synths hitting the same power chord guitars is a good example of how keys can support and make the guitars appear more intense with actually noticing them on their own.
This is really cool of you to share tons of brilliant info, but the ken burns zoom effect on every shot is incredibly distracting for in-depth videos, trying to check out what you're doing in Pro Tools and focus on the info you're actually sharing.
agreed for the shots of me. i turned on auto zooming and I don't like it for those shots. won't do that again. but for the PT shots I actually think its really helpful to give context and I think the zooming is helpful there. There might be a few where the zoom is too much or too fast, but overall I think it actually helps to focus the viewer on what I'm talking about. probably went a little overboard on this episode though. thanks for the critique.
@@KenAndrewsMusic Sorry to be that guy too but i came to write this too Ken. If someone is watching your video, it's likely we are well used to looking at a non moving DAW screen. Maybe a little app that highlights where your mouse is would do the trick of drawing attention. but regardless your info and sounds are invaluable though, thanks for these videos
@@KenAndrewsMusic I agree, please tone it back. It feels a little bit like I'm watching a Nail the Mix clip while drunk. It is cool to not just have a static screenshot all the time, but the constant motion is a little much.
