Daki your chainmail sweater is unbelievable beautiful and even more so on you. It comes alive and the fit is fabulous. I wasn't sure about the three needle bind off shoulder edge but you have convinced me to give it a try. I am sure you will agree that the drape of the fabric is key to this type of shoulder. Outside the colors come alive. Thank you for sharing. And the 'interruptions' are just fine. I love your videos because they appear so real and it is like sipping and knitting with a friend.

Oh that is the highest praise you could have given me, thank you so much for making time for the podcast and for leaving me such a delightful comment! I agree with you that the colors of the sweater at its most beautiful outdoors in the snow light. And yes any kind of obvious shoulder styling does have an impact on the drape of the fabric and vice versa. Good point! 🙏🏽💙

😀Thank you Daki for sharing your passion in your precious time. Where you live looks and sounds magical. Your makes are so lovingly made. I enjoyed everything about this episode. I recently finished a pair of fingerless mitts, partially using some Jacob handspun🧶🫶🏿 which I created on my Turkish spindle. One of my very first ‘proper spins’! The temperatures in the UK are unpredictable at the moment but they sure keep my hands warm on chilly days.😊. Loved the socks you made for your husband and so happy for you that you found the time to create a pair for yourself. The striped ones look lovely. After seeing your white Jacob yarn I would like to make a striped pair in dark brown and white Jacob yarn. I do not have babies anymore, my children are adults but I work full time and with the climate turning so cold now I wish I could knit quickly for the family to keep them warm as commercial garments just do not offer enough warm and there are so many benefits to natural wool. Happy creating till next time😁💕
@woolandtheforest
@woolandtheforest 6 месяцев назад
Oh what a lovely message to read! I love that you have also used Jacobs to spin with. It is such an exquisite fiber and there are many similarities with Icelandic but also big differences. I hope you get to make a pair of socks with your handspun soon and your family is truly blessed to have someone so keen to have them lovingly and warmly dressed in hand knits🥰🙏🏽

OK some more serious thoughts, as short as I can because I don't want to take over the entire comment section 😆 I love your chainmail sweater, really appreciate the close ups and to see you wearing it in real life, this does it so much more justice! It looks gorgeous on you! (But I suspect you could wear a plastic bag and still look gorgeous in it 😍) I also really appreciate all you're telling us about handspun and unprocessed wool. I really thought that such yarns don't make for very strong knitting. That the yarn is much more delicate and therefore the knitted fabric will be too. Which doesn't have to be a problem for a sweater/jumper, depending on the pattern, but I never imagined that such yarns could be suitable for socks! And that the very thing which makes the yarn delicate causes the felting, which in fact will result in sturdier knitwear! It seems pretty obvious perhaps... but consider me amazed and intrigued 😄 Also, I was whooping just now because I am LITERALLY knitting with Camarose Lamauld as I'm watching this episode! I made a sweater for my daughter and now working on another sweater for my little boy who is growing like mad so I hope he'll still fit it when it's done! I wish I could show you a picture... The locally sourced handspun yarn sounds absolutely wonderful. I hope you can find the time to spin to your heart's content ❤🙏 (And if you're ever considering selling some of your own local handspun yarn, I would be interested!)

I used to watch Elizabeth Zimmerman on television too. I was elated whenever I could see her. I have been knitting since 1960. I had to learn from books because I knew no one who knit when I started to learn. I am addicted now and I knit all the time. I have never used the kind of wool you use. I will have to try it. Hi Daki. I, also, keep telling myself I need to get back to my wheel. I haven't tried Nutiden, but there is a mill in Michigan (Zeilinger) that sells plates of unspun, 100% US grown, Targhee pencil roving that is so squishy and wonderful! It heavier than the Nutiden from what I can find at 525-550 yds to 9 ounces. I have a bunch of plates of it in a natural "white" that I picked up at Rhinebeck this year that I need to do something with soon, but I don't know what exactly yet. I could always just spin it, too. Then there is the luscious, nearly black Wensleydale fleece I need to wash and spin calling to me from the other direction. Decisions need to be made! 😄Oh, btw, this is Theresa (formerly a picture of a foot with rainbow toenails lol).
@woolandtheforest
@woolandtheforest 6 месяцев назад
So lovely to hear from you Theresa! Wishing you a very happy new year and hoping that everything is going well for you so far. I was so excited to hear about the Michigan based pencil roving that I ran to their website as soon as I had read your comment. It does look very different from the three other types of unspun I have used but it also looks like it would knit up beautifully! Unfortunately they were all sold out so now I'm waiting to be able to get some in the future. 🙏🏽💙

Hello Ann!! So lovely to have you pop by here again. These particular handspun socks fit one of my two pairs of boots and my wellies of course. But a pair of snow boots a size up, worn with handspun socks, would be the perfect way to prevent those frozen toes I always seem to get on snow days. It's my tropical island blood, it takes a lot of mind over matter to pull those feet out of their natural tendency to go into SHOCK when it's below -5C 😂

hello to you, I definitely enjoyed your podcast. What a wonderful discovery! I don't feel so lonely anymore, hearing you and your passion for wool, spinning, knitting... I am quite the same, but in France, where I live, people are far from convinced about what I do ! (I transformed my passion to become my work and sell my knitting but mentality and close minds are hard to change and open: to scratchy, to difficult to take care of, to expensive, to beautiful...🤯 It's a shame, they really don't understand what they are missing not wearing wool!! but I will always persevere - I can't stop knitting or spinning anyway! I love to discover new techniques and going back to very old traditions like Nalbinding... Anyway, all this to say, thanks for being yourself, it was a breath of fresh air, a boost for my week...(ps:I concur E.Zimmermann IS THE best!😍

I love all of your handknits. Do you make your socks a bit longer than the foot so when they felt a bit, they are the right size? I have not knit socks with untreated wool yet. I have tried spinning a little bit, I am not sure that it is for me. You are a very busy person and I would like to thank you for making these podcasts. 😊
@woolandtheforest
@woolandtheforest 6 месяцев назад
No I haven't found that the initial felting on my husband's socks have affected the length at the leg end of the sock. I don't intentionally felt the entire sock, it's just the parts of the sock that get a lot of friction on them naturally seem to felt with these untreated and unprocessed wools. Thank you so much for watching the podcast!

@@woolandtheforest Thank you for replying, Daki 🙂 I am looking forward to see the socks 🙂 May you get healthy and in full strength soon, it is great you are slowing down.. I work with women - discovering the potential of the voice (singing with the real voice) and many of them come, working so hard in the expense of themselves and I also have this tendency .... I think we have so many completely insane expectations of what to do in a day these times, especially when we are also creative and yet as women we feel it is still not enough. May we all just slow down and enjoy the being, especially when we have children. Just being around them, not rushing anywhere or having a goal in mind, is a pure magic... it is wonderful you have 4 of them and still small :-),Mine are already 17 and 20 and I still love being with them. We are from Europe, Czech republic and we took a road trip together to US last summer and visited Olympia national park, so we were close to you :-) Lots of love, Martina

So, I’m back 😂. I am just stunned by your Elizabeth Zimmerman unspun sweater. I have her book and now cannot wait to dive in. But I’ve been thinking, can you make socks out of unspun if you hold it with something else? I’ve been googling and now think this idea might be a bad one since I can’t find any answers. But if it can be done, I would love to make a pair for my mom, who has very sensitive feet. I was hoping you might know. It might be silly (I’ve never worked with unspun yarn), but I thought asking couldn’t hurt. Thank you!
@Meredith36

@woolandtheforest

@woolandtheforest
@woolandtheforest 6 месяцев назад
It is certainly possible to knit socks with unspan yarn, but the only question is how long it will last. I even know that some people have knit with Nuiden unspun, which is probably the most fragile of all the unspun I have used. I would certainly recommend using the Icelandic on spun, held with Icelandic lace weight, as a way to knit socks because Icelandic wool has inherent strengths in them that will suit a soft yet long wearing sock. And you could use any other sock pattern as long as the gauge matches, if that makes sense.

I would definitely start with Elizabeth Zimmerman's Knitting Around videos and the book if you can find it. That's the one where she really starts with all the fundamentals of learning to knit. And then there's the absolute classic, "Knitting Without Tears", again by Elizabeth Zimmerman. That one is definitely more freely available. With those two books to start with I think you'll be off to a good start!

And i forgot to mention, the "Teach Yourself Visually" series is also supposed to be pretty good when it comes to basic knitting. Although I've never used it myself, if you're a visual learner it might help.

Thank you so much! I believe the base color here is either Vagabond or Morker. The reason I'm unsure is because it was from a patreon cell where I did not actually receive the color I had ordered, so I'm not sure and exactly what the name for this base was. And the pink looks like many of the pinks they've done before and was from a mixed bag. I hope that helps!
