I wish more interviews were like this - it was very wholesome and real. I feel like the art of 'interviewing' has gotten lost. So many people just talk but don't really listen. I feel like I got to know what the both of you are about and not just what you do for a living. This was time well spent. Great interview:)

I don't like how Simu Liu says that the Shang Chi movie is an 'underdog' film, in response to Chapek's benign comments about theater release strategy. Shang Chi is a big budget Disney movie from a huge studio (Marvel Studios), massive franchise (MCU) and has a wide fanbase. How, exactly, is Shang Chi an 'underdog' film? Many small, independent films would love that kind of support. Simu Liu loves to grandstand and promote himself. I wish he was a bit more humble.
@ilsukdyang8134
@ilsukdyang8134 2 года назад
Guardians of the Galaxy was seen as an underdog film, so why wouldn't Shang-Chi be seen as one? You do understand that he's an actor, right? They're supposed to promote themselves. Plus, he did it in an organic and unobtrusive way. I don't really see the arrogance here. He's played arrogant characters, but he seems way different than the characters he's portrayed.
@shameless5444
@shameless5444 2 года назад
@@ilsukdyang8134 Guardians of the Galaxy had a green alien, tattooed man, talking raccoon and an anthropomorphic tree and the story was set in space. Marvel and James Gunn took many risks with that film. Shang Chi is a Phase 4 film that Disney/Marvel expected to perform like 'Black Panther'. They heavily marketed Shang Chi as an 'iconic hero', 'you're next favorite Avenger' and the ten rings were 'more powerful than any other weapon of the MCU universe'. It was a martial arts superhero film that also included Pokemon-like mythical creatures in its advertising. How does this look like an 'underdog' film? It's nowhere close to being an underdog. Simu Liu was very arrogant and pretentious because he twisted Chapek's comments to create a controversy to promote his film. Chapek clearly stated that the 'Shang Chi' 45-day release strategy before SVOD was an 'experiment'. Simu Liu was a drama queen who overreacted and portrayed those benign comments, at a business shareholder meeting, as some kind of an attack on his film and Asian representation. He makes many outrageous comments. This wasn't his only bad one.

@@shameless5444 First of all, almost no one knew about Shang-Chi until about a year or two ago. Second of all, for an mcu film, it was hardly advertised. Everyone I've talked to about it didn't even know it wasn't until diehard fans of the mcu told them about it. The reason it's done so well is because of word-of-mouth advertising, just like Guardians. Don't know anything about the Chapek stuff, but that definitely sounds like a concern. But I will say this. There's nothing wrong about being proud of your work. You seem bent on disliking Simu after hearing a few stories about him. How is this an underdog movie? How is it not? When was the last Hollywood movie, besides Crazy Rich Asians and Joy Luck Club, that had an Asian-dominant cast? That's an underdog film, especially with someone as green as Simu as the lead actor. Either way, you have your opinion, I have mine (and yes they're opinions) so let's leave it at that
@shameless5444
@shameless5444 2 года назад
@@ilsukdyang8134 The General Audience didn't really know Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Dr. Strange, the GoG crew, Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, etc. Technically, ALL those movies would fit your definition of an underdog, which is a stretch. Why? Because some of those movies were released after the MCU became a juggernaut. It's really hard to describe Shang Chi as an underdog for being an all Asian cast. The Joy Luck Club and Crazy Rich Asians were successful and celebrated films. For the MCU, Black Panther already proved that Marvel fans will watch a movie with diverse characters and different cultural storytelling. Lastly, China has a long history of producing martial arts films, which are popular around the world. Simu Liu played a Chinese martial artist superhero. He didn't exactly break any molds. There's nothing revolutionary about his movie, besides being the first Asian-led Marvel Superhero film. Do you know how many awesome martial arts films have been released where the fighters have super-human, amazing abilities? Technically, Wong was the first Asian Superhero in the MCU. The 'underdog' label is fake MCU hype. Everyone has opinions, but some opinions are more well thought out and better defended than others.

@@shameless5444 That's China, not Hollywood. This is specifically made for western audiences. You do realize it's not even being released in China. And yes, those two movies (which I already mentioned to you) were highly successful, but that were very different movies from Shang-Chi (not to mention, separated by a lot of time). Martial arts movies have always had a tenuous relationship with the West ar best. Plus, it was generally accepted that this movie would bomb at the box office. Literally, the only reason it's doing so well is because of word-of-mouth. Yeah, all the characters you mentioned weren't big names, but they were bigger than the Guardians and Shang-Chi (I'll include the Eternals as well). With the names you mentioned, people had ar least heard of them in some shape or form. And Iron Man was definitely an underdog movie. It wasn't until The Avengers was highly successful, that you could remove the underdog label from the mcu. Also, with Shang-Chi, many people seemed to be against it mostly because it was something different. Many people said the same things about Guardians for different reasons. Both proved the naysayers wrong, for the most part. Also, you have to realize that we're still in the middle of a pandemic, which will even slow down the mcu, even if just a little

His parents were electrical engineers. They had zero problems putting food on the table. He grew up in a very well-to-do, immigrant family. His parents are amazing! Simu? Not so much. He lived a very privileged life. Lol. The dude even mispronounced the title of his own movie. Bruh, how?

I wouldn't call it privileged but maybe an upper middle class family. For immigrants coming to the us itself a privilege.
@ilsukdyang8134
@ilsukdyang8134 2 года назад
@@MrALenCar321 Not necessarily. Often times, immigrants had better jobs and living circumstances in their home countries. They were professionals there and become taxi drivers here making much less money in a country that is much less free than it seems. Don't get me wrong, I love the USA, was born here, and have lived here my entire life. But it's not the "Holy Grail" many make it out to be, especially for immigrants. I will say that Simu was definitely more privileged than most immigrants, when he came to Canada. That doesn't mean he didn't go through tough times. Racism against Asians here in America has been a thing for centuries
