Oh my gosh!! I have NEVER seen someone perfectly emulate all the ways I sit when I'm working!! Sitting is SO uncomfortable, I hate it!!! Grateful for the tips though!
It’s so encouraging to watch this, i find it so hard to sit and I’ll definitely give this a go! I constantly sit with my knee up against my chest (or both!) and have never understood why no one else sits like that!
Wow, I never realised that sitting wasn't supposed to be uncomfortable :O I always do the "tucking" the leg under, especially at work but I'm worried it will hurt my knee long-term I can't wait to put all of this into practice!
You know you’re hypermobile when... That position with your foot up on the desk looks SO comfortable, LOL! Can’t believe I never arrived at that one in all my contortions.
That one foot up on the desk position ...like looking in a mirror! I have realised recently that sleeping that way with one knee up in my face and the other leg dead straight with pointed toes (....so comfy!!!) is why my hips have been screaming at me for months. It's been my go-to position for as long as I can remember, and it still feels good, but if I do it now I am in so much pain the next day. Could you do a video on safe sleeping positions? That would be great. Also, can you recommend any workout videos that are safe for hypermobility? All the ones I've found are more informative with lots of long explanations, rather than get-right-into-it workouts you can watch over & over for a daily workout. Cheers.
I am LITERALLY in bed right now with one knee hiked up to my elbow. Which I have switched to because my other go-to is RUINING my shoulders. I had no idea this was A Thing.
I do this too!! LOL Seriously lately I literally consciously make myself straighten the "up" leg to more parallel and go back to sleep. I think/feel it's my pt practice that is starting to make parallel-ish more "comfortable" (maybe?)
Omg... the weird chair sitting is entirely me. Even the foot on the table thing! I’ve only recently been told I have a hypermobile spine but these signs have been going on for years! For some reason those positions were just more comfortable than sitting properly, no matter how odd looking it was (or whether my mom got upset with me for hugging a knee at the dinner table)! I will try to use these tips!
This is great and I'll definitely try these positions but there is something you are missing with the feet-up thing that my cardiovascular/ POTS specialist pointed out - he believes nearly all his hypermobile patients will also put their legs up naturally when seated to subconsciously try and stabilise blood pressure... Hypermobile patients often have low blood pressure/ unstable blood pressure problems/ POTS and sitting for long periods obviously makes this worse. If legs are up then less effort for that blood to get the the brain. That's how he explained it to me anyway. I wonder if being in the position you suggest but with legs up on a stool in front might be good?
Angie Fink Or check out those zero gravity chairs/desks. And the sukasana chair. These solutions are expensive tho of course. I had a physio tell me not to sit cross legged. No way I could not though. On steroids for things now but that doesn’t fix the hyper mobility lol. Ugh, painful for sure. Cheers.
I'm hypermobile and whenever I'm sitting I really like to put a chair on the opposite side of me and put my legs up on it... Never thought about the link to blood pressure before that's kind of interesting
I'm constantly shifting about when i'm sitting. Never stay in one position for long. And that shoulder thing...that explains what is happening when I'm carrying groceries! I knew something was going on but i wasn't sure what or how to explain it but to say the shoulder was drooping!
My whole life I've pulled one or two of my legs forward when seated bc I was/am SO uncomfortable otherwise, I can't stay in one position and it makes me lose my focus. The tilting forward of the hip is something I will work on. Thank you!. I've always felt pulling my body all the way into the desk was the most comfortable (even if it was for a short period). LOVE your video and will watch the rest! My family and friends to this day have NO clue what I go through on a daily basis...the youtube community makes me feel like I'm not insane. :-D
Subscribed!!! This explains the unusual sitting behaviors my daughter and I have had for many years! I recently saw a rheumatologist where he explained to me that I had Hypermobility syndrome. This nearly explains all my unanswered questions why I was this way that others did not struggle with! Thanks for this video. My daughter and I will watch it together again. I'm also super happy to see so many of the viewers supporting each others comments!!
Thank you for subscribing! I'm thrilled the video helped with your Hypermobility Syndrome. Enjoy watching with your daughter, and it’s wonderful to see such supportive comments from everyone!
When you put your leg up on the desk I felt so seen! 😂 I used to get some looks in the office doing that I found crossing a leg up on the desk worked wonders, so a leg is posted on the ground and the other is laying flat along the width of the desk, I then rest my elbows on my leg when im getting stuck in to some coding 😂 My hips LOVE it, boss. Not so much
Wow, was just diagnosed with hEDS. Have been wearing a back brace almost daily for 10 years. It helps a little, but sitting or standing for long periods of time has been causing excruciating pain and now at least I know why! People thinking you're crazy and also not getting diagnosed for years is one of the worst parts of this crap.
No one ever asks this on hypermobility channels but................... how about a video on positions during sex to avoid hip subluxations, hand pain from repetitive movement, etc? It wouldn't get monetised, that's for sure...but you'd make for some quality of life improvements for some folk!
Personally, swapping positions more often, finding chairs, different pillows, etc. for support helps a lot! My wrists are particularly bad so I often wear braces, some like them for ankles and knees. I found that toys help a lot as they do most of the work and I just have to hold it in the right spots, I've even heard s*x swings are helpful since they take pressure off most of the joints but isn't always an option for some people. I get bad hip pain and missionary is the worst on it, so doggy/cowgirl is more comfortable.
This is so incredible!!!! Thank you so much for sharing! I’ve been on a journey of discovery with my daughter (15 months now) who wasn’t crawling and finally learnt it’s cause she’s hyper mobile and it’s genetic! Now I’m learning about myself and my back pain. Thank you for these videos!
I was doubtful when opening this video, I mean I'm not even diagnosed with hypermobility yet- I just have my doubts. You then proceeded to perfectly emulate all the ways I try to compensate for uncomfortable sitting positions and show me a method to controlling it. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this! I always found the "proper" way to sit incredibly uncomfortable, this makes much more sense. Hopefully this will lead to me sitting better, and stop the neck pain/headache that I normally get
Everything is so spot on. Thank you for those exercises. I had never been able to control how I sit even if my life depends on it. This might actually work.
This video is so helpful - I sit all these funny ways and even have a little friction spot on each ankle from when I sit all twisty-turny - as far as diagnoses, a doctor was able to attribute it to my sitting position, alongside knee problems from pretzeling up so tight, but I'm only discovering that hypermobility is a real thing! I'm 32 and I just thought I was 'a little extra bendy' this whole time. Thanks for these Hacks!
Oh my goodness i'm so embarrassed... the part moving from the leg tucked under all the way to the leg on the desk! Completely me, I was actually already watching this with my left leg up on the chair. Thought I was just weird!! Haha thanks for this video :)
The sliding forward, the pain in the big muscles, and the shoulder pain - wow! I didn't know you could sit in a chair without the constant shuffling back to stay in the seat. I have been using the occy health advice for years and wondering why it didn't help the pain. Thank you for this - I've managed to stay in the same position in the seat for longer than I ever have before just by taking your advice. One question - I have a laptop and sit it on a support to stop it overheating which means I can't lay my hands flat, any advice please?
I used to do the one foot on the table position when I had to drive for long periods of time! Not safe, but like you said, it kind of happened without me thinking about it.
I was always watching other people sitting comfortably for long time. And I was astonished how they can do that but later I just knew it was just me because of hyper mobility .
I've had a lot of issues with hyper mobilty , my shoulder has slipped out of place and my left leg has limited mobility , I've been attending physiotherapy for 6 months now and they still don't seem to know how to help me though after watching a few of your videos I feel you are more knowledgeable about this subject , especially sitting on a chair which as you know can cause pain , I will implement what I see and hopefully I'll have good news , thanks
After just a few minutes of trying out the corrected posture I already have less tension in my neck and back. Going to keep practicing this. Thank you!
I am so happy I found you! I am suffering now when I am back to the University. I will start to apply all your tips and hopefully it will help me survive next Two years of education
If you are interested, i have been working on a few seats and decompression devices for us who have massive hyper-mobility. I would love to work with you in developing and testing these chairs, seats / add on's . Getting treatments for Lyme at the moment but will be done in another 8-9 weeks. I will be available after this time to start getting serious again.
Thank you SO much for this video, very useful! :) I knocked my head along those "weird" positions saying this is me, also me, exactly haha somehow intuitively u know what "helps" but in a long term...
*facepalm* i didnt realize sliding off the chair was a hypermobility thing.... i usually keep both my knees up and use my shins to pin myself into the chair against the table/desk
I had to laugh... I've done all of those positions for decades. Nowadays I sit with one leg up on a stool under the desk, but your adjustments and practices look even better. Ty!
Legit, tho, the first three 'common positions' you showed are the ways I usually sit. I also sometimes hybridize position two and position three (I put my right ankle on my left knee whilst super slouched).
Really had to laugh at the examples of sitting positions you gave at 3:45, every single one is so recognisable. I'm gonna try to follow your advice, sounds really good.
Hi. Firstly this video is soo on the money for me and my sitting challenges. I'm a therapist and am in the process of setting up a new office. I've been putting off purchasing a chair because of this very issue/challenge. I'd love any information or advice you have about choosing a chair. 🙏
I've been unconsciously taking that position for longer term sitting for some time, I was trying to "correct" it but now I know I don't need to! Thank you for this video!
>Be me, watching this video while sitting on the back of my hips with right leg tucked and leaning against the armrest, left leg propped on the right side of my desk, right arm looped under in pretzel mode.
thanks i will try this, but can i ask what about siting on the floor?, you see ones in a while i move to the floor and using my bed as a desk, i draw for one hour, and constatly move my hips in the cross leg position to 90/90 and actually have found some realeve, also my ineer knees started to pain, so put a cushion and sit on it and my knees started to feel better. will be cool to see some hypermobitly hacks for sit on a desk floor thanks
I really struggle with sitting correctly, not least because i find it hard to know where my body is in space. I'm in pain most days at work, despite having had adaptions made to my desk and chair 😢
What would you recommend for people who are doing art work on a tablet. I often find myself hunching over quite dramatically. I’m not quite sure how to raise my iPad up so I can draw on it comftably without curling my right arm in significantly. Also you wouldn’t happen to know what type of chair you are using that looks very helpful.
both foot on my tall desk, leaning backwards and keyboard on my knees, mouse position is probably bad, screen has just the right height in current position. how bad could it possibly be
hi.pain is a big struggle.does anyone have advice for dealing with the chronic pain. Currently getting physiotherapy and sitting on a cushion. also stomach issues when eating anything but meat.diahrea and stomach pain. 30 year old. thanks
You have no arms on your chair. After years of upper back agony, I finally found that having support for my arms is critical. I cannot sit in an armless chair for more than a short time. In an ergonomic chair with adjustable arms, I’m fine.
Wow, thank you. I can't sit with my foot under my butt anymore because of hip pain. I make beaded jewelry any suggestions for how to sit? I am rarely comfortable sitting. Thank you
This is helpful, but immediately causes pain on my butt joints. On the left side in particular I have old swelling at the top of my femur and so sitting properly immediately hurts that area that never really healed after initial injury. What would you suggest if those butt joints have chronic pain?
Hello, Thank you for your question. This position can encourage you to use your deep neck flexors to stabilise your cervical spine. If you have an unstable neck, it is best to use a high backed chair!
Sitting like this makes me feel like that there are ants walking up and down my lower back and it doesn’t really hurt but feel weird - I tried to find my way to sit but I can’t do it.
Hello! :) I know this is an old video, but I am struggling hard with this right now and on the path to a new chair and desk, and I absolutely want to try this out! :) I like to play computer games with a keyboard and mouse, is there a specific way you would recommend for KB and mouse placement? Thank you!!
Omg- I have been criticized by bosses and teachers my whole life for sitting like this. I couldn’t work at a desk job and was told I had bad beliefs about working when it turns out I have hEDS😢😂
Hi Ann, It is great to hear that you have a diagnosis. I hope this video has helped you. Check out the rest of our Hypermobility Hacks videos for other useful tips and tricks.
THANK YOU. I'm a music producer, but I find myself less and less creative due to my EDS pains. I can't find a comfortable way to sit in the studip for long periods. I'll try all these tips 😁
One thing that has really helped me is full on embracing spreading my legs. Sounds crazy but it seems to stabilize my hips/pelvis in a way that makes me less likely to end up slouching.
After being diagnosed hyper mobile and not being double jointed, I had a hard time believing all my injuries were from hyper mobility. After watching this video, I know the diagnosis is accurate! I have sat in all those positions except leg out on desk. My favorite is the tuck. Would floor sitting be beneficial for hyper mobile people- providing we don’t get too stiff when erect?
I literally do all of those one leg up positions and now I have knee problems in that leg! I used to drive my car with the leg out the window!!! Have been suffering from shoulder pain for 5 years now... and PT, steroid shots, muscle relaxers did NOT help. I'm praying this would help, except its hard for me to find desks I can rest my forearm because I am really short... hopefully it'll work!!!!
