Soseki NATSUME
Writer linking the Meiji era with the present

Soseki NATSUME was a Japanese novelist active during the Meiji and Taisho periods. Despite this, he is still highly popular today, having been adapted into manga and app games.
What do you think is the reason for this?
Natsume Soseki was born in Tokyo in 1867, the same year Masaoka Shiki was born. After graduating from university, he worked as an English teacher, and in 1900 went to England to study English teaching methods. After returning to Japan, he took up teaching again, but his novels, such as I am a Cat, were so well received that he quit his teaching job and became a writer.
Why is he still so popular and attracts the younger generation as well as the older?
I think there would be two main reasons.
Firstly,his writings show well that the Meiji and Taisho periods were somewhere between the Edo period and the present, and that there is much that has both been lost and remains today. The stories from Soseki set in that era are fascinating and interesting for their time.
Secondly, Soseki's style is appropriate for his attitude, which he himself coined as Teikai shumi , or the 'low-turn taste', an attitude that avoids worldly cares and tries to look at the world and life with an open mind and relaxed attitude. As a result, his work often contains jokes and detours that could only have come from his cultured mind.
My favourite Natsume Soseki work is The Gate.
The description of the couple's modest life together, filled with gentle love, is wonderful and makes me feel relaxed and peaceful when I read it.
I was wondering, Soseki may have achieved his ideal life in this story…

明治と今を繋ぐ作家
夏目漱石は、明治・大正時代に活躍した日本の小説家、文学者です。にもかかわらず、漫画化やアプリゲーム化されるなど、現在でも高い人気を誇っています。
その理由は何でしょう？
夏目漱石は、正岡子規が生まれた年と同じ、1867年に東京に生まれました。大学卒業後は英語教師をし、1900年には英語教育法を研究するため、イギリスへ留学しました。帰国後はまた教師の職に就きましたが、発表した小説『吾輩は猫である』などが好評となり、教職を辞めて作家となりました。
なぜ彼は今でも人気があり、年配の方だけでなく若い世代も惹きつけるのでしょうか。それには、大きく分けて2つの理由があるだろうと思います。
まず第一に、彼の文章を読むと、明治・大正という時代が江戸時代と現代の中間にあり、失われたものも今も残っているものもたくさんあることがよく分かります。 その時代を舞台にした漱石の物語は、当時のものとして魅力的で面白い。
第二に、漱石の作風は、彼自身が「低回趣味」と名づけた、世俗の煩わしさを避け、広い心でゆったりと世間や人生を見ようとする姿勢にふさわしいものでした。そのため、彼の作品には、彼の教養が反映されたようなジョークや回りくどい表現が多く見られます。
ところで私のお気に入りの漱石の作品は『門』です。優しい愛に包まれた夫婦のささやかな生活の描写が素晴らしく、読んでいてほっこりとした気持ちになります。
ふと、漱石はこの物語の中で理想の人生を描き上げたのかもしれない...と思いました。
