Zen Whispers: Ryōkan’s Timeless Haiku
Hello and welcome, dear listeners, to another episode, 'Author Spotlight.' I'm Kasumi Kobayashi, and today, we embark on a journey into the enduring legacy of Ryōkan.
Born in 1758 in Niigata Prefecture, Ryōkan's literary contributions span waka poems, Chinese verses, and haiku, resonating deeply with audiences, encapsulating emotions and relatable sentiments. His roots stem from a family lineage deeply involved in commerce and civic duties. An avid reader from a young age, his life took a turn at 22 when he embraced Zen teachings, diving into a life of rigorous Zen practice, refining both his spiritual and artistic expression.
Ryōkan's essence, not confined to his literary genius, lives on in the collective memory of the Japanese people. He's fondly remembered as a compassionate monk, often depicted sharing tender moments with children, a snapshot of simplicity and genuine connections.
Let’s explore the treasures he left behind:
"Hometown" (布留散東(読み:ふるさと)): A cluster of poems likely surfaced around 1812. The anthology kicks off with verses evoking Ryōkan's nostalgic return to Niigata, tapping into the deep emotional connection to his hometown. Of particular note is a touching verse, vividly capturing the sheer delight of playing temari with the children.
"The Dew on Lotus"(はちすの露(つゆ)) : A compilation of poems curated by Teishin-ni (貞心尼), a figure deeply respectful of Ryōkan, forty years his junior. She acted not only as a student but also a friend and confidante in his later years. Divided into primary and secondary sections, it contains Ryōkan's verses and exchanges between Ryōkan and Teishin-ni.
"Chinese Poems by Ryokan"(良寛詩集): Ryōkan's approach to Chinese poetry differed from rigid conventions, focusing on authenticity over conforming to prescribed rules. He disdained poetry created for vanity or seeking fame, advocating for genuine self-expression.
Ryōkan's legacy extends beyond poetic verses, offering a path to embrace sincerity and life's simplest moments. His words remain not just poetry but a guide to appreciating life's essence.

良寛
子どもと遊ぶお坊様歌人
良寛は、1758年、新潟県に生まれ、親しみやすく人々への愛情が感じられる和歌や、漢詩、俳句などを残しました。
生家は由緒正しい家柄で、廻船問屋を営み、世襲で町名主(市長)も代々務めていました。良寛は、幼少より読書が好きだったそうです。22歳で出家してから、禅僧として厳しい修行もしています。
良寛と言えば、殆どの日本人は、子供たちに混じって遊ぶ優しいお坊さんを思い浮かべると思います。

それでは良寛の作品を紹介します。
『布留散東(ふるさと)』　
1812年前後に作られたらしい歌集です。故郷の新潟へ帰る途中に詠んだとされる歌で始まります。タイトルどおり、故郷を思って詠まれた歌が多いです。
先に紹介した子どもと手まりする歌も、この歌集に含まれます。
『はちすの露』　
はちすは、蓮(lotus)の古名です。良寛より40歳年下の尼僧、貞心尼が編んだ歌集です。貞心尼は良寛を師として敬愛し、晩年の良寛を友人そして弟子として慰めました。本篇と唱和篇からなり、本篇は良寛の歌、唱和篇は良寛と貞心尼のやり取りの歌からなっています。
『良寛詩集』
良寛は、あまり漢詩のルールにこだわらず、心に浮かんだ事を映し出すことを主眼としたようです。「歌人の歌、詩人の詩、料理人の料理」を嫌った良寛。彼は、いかにも玄人が作ったと分かるような、例えば人を感心させようとか新奇なものを作って名声を得ようとか、色々な煩悩が含まれるような作品を嫌ったようです。
