Episode 21 - Whanganui, New Zealand

My Great Great Grand Aunt Mary Ann Collinson emigrated from England to Whanganui in 1873 as part of a government emigration program. She became a suffragette during her time there. She remarried and had a Son called Charles Edward "Bronco" Seeling. He became a legendary New Zealand All Black rugby player... he was part of the team known as the "Originals" that toured England in 1905. Look up Mary Ann Seeling and Charles Edward Seeling if interested.

Nice video. I think you pretty much covered all there is to see. I had a car and spent 6 months there and didn't find that much more to do.

I grew up in Wanganui when it didn't have the H. Names are being changed all over NZ to keep Maori lobbyists happy.

Hi Heather! A lovely video! As you might expect, I've never been to Whanganui. In fact, when I left NZ in 2004 it was called Wanganui. Checking Wikipedia I see that it wasn't until 2009 the government had the recommendeation of the New Zealand Geographic Board and decided that while either spelling was OK, all government agencies would use Whanganui. I've literally never given the town much thought, and only saw the War Memorial Tower on RU-vid this year. Clearly, it's worth spending some time to check out the region. (Btw did you actually check out the Durie Hill Elevator? That century old underground elevator just makes me geek out!) Again, thanks for posting these videos. By not deliberately seeking out the "checklist" tourist spots, your videos are actually useful as a travel guide. I think I learn something new with every video you post.

I just watched one of your most recent videos last night or so and subscribed. For some unknown reason, RU-vid decided that this would be the first of your videos that would be recommended to me. It's surely just a coincidence that I spent all my teenage years in Whanganui, right? Smh, Google spies so hard, it knows where I lived ten years ago. Though it's just as well because it was interesting to see how things have changed after all this time, which is not at all because it looks just as dead as when I left. Don't get me wrong, Whanganui is an absolutely beautiful place, and it's quite nice for raising a family, but I think I'm too addicted to the vibrance of city life to ever live there again. Also, if the iSite said there's no public transport around the city, that might just be a temporary thing, because there was a series of buses between the CBD and the suburbs when I lived there, and there's a timetable for 2021 on the regional council website. Or maybe you were there on a Sunday? Cos they don't run on Sundays and they only have like three times on Saturdays. I plan on making my way through your video catalogue over the next couple of weeks or so (I have ADHD so I can only do so much in one sitting), so don't be surprised if you see me popping up in the comments on some of your older videos. Engagement is good for the algorithm so I usually don't refrain from leaving comments when something comes to mind even if the video's a bit old, as was the case here. One advantage of Wanganui being a backwater is lots of buildings with history haven't been ripped down with "progress".

why its empty no houses or homes here?
