I just watched a RU-vid video by Knit-Paper-Scissors called “How to use sock ruler”. It is how I measure. I do subtract .5 inches for negative ease and I do a 2” toe so my measurement is 7 inches for my 9.5” foot length.

I just decided the other night that I am going to knit the West Knits year of socks 2023. Like you some of them scare me but I think it is what I need to grow as a knitter. So I say go for all the MKAL shawls !! And maybe someday I will be brave enough to try it too. 😂

Thanks for this podcast, love it. The year long knit-a-long of mkal, I'm in, I have 2 on my wish list off making, the Starflake have the yarn in my stash for 3 years already and the Exploration station is my al time favorite one, so yeah only 2 but love the both, not knitting this mkal now but maybe it's going to be on my list too, love the design off it. Hello from Mounds, Illinois. Your shawl is so beautiful and I love the colors! My sister wears a size 10 shoe and I knit her sock foot to a 7 1/2 then knit the toe decreases and they fit her perfectly because the toe is 2 1/2 inches.

I love your idea of the Knit All the MKALs KAL! I also don’t want to do brioche. So I understand not doing all of them. But there are definitely some I want to do!

I am a Size 10 as well (my foot actually measures 10") so I start my toe decreases at 8.25" - this is following Kay's (Crazy Sock Lady) pattern. She says to start your toe 1.75" before your desired (finished) length - for her Medium size. This fits perfectly!! Hope this helps😊

Good Morning Lisa! Your Geogradient shawl is turning out so nice. You are a beautiful knitter. I’m in for the MKAL MKAL although I’m a slow knitter so will probably only get one done!😂 I don’t want to do brioche either. There are probably some good substitutions for the brioche that other knitters have posted on Ravelry.

I’ll definitely be in for the MKAL knit along! It will be so fun! I think you should do the one that scares you the most first, then you’ll discover that you can absolutely do it and will have the confidence to just smash through all the rest ❤. Also we watched Foundation a second time and picked up so much more detail and things we missed the second time - so perhaps that might help?

I love your mkal. I think you should do a SW mkal year long knit a long. the podcast grumpy sheep happy llama does it and so do the codependent knitters. It is super casual for people. I want to make the doodler and I also want to make the starflanket blanket pattern instead of the shawl.

I love the IDEA of knitting all the Westknits MKALs, but also know my motivation would quickly wane (it's a struggle to just finish the October one each year). It would definitely be a long-term goal. There a few I really like, and a few not so much....the other problem is I rarely wear shawls 😂.

For my sock ruler, it’s noted that the size marks are where you start the toe/heel, not the full size of the finished sock. That tripped me up when I got it and wonder if it helps you at all. Good luck!

I would love to knit all the MKAL shawls except I don't wear shawls. I've knit 2 of the MKALs and loved the process. I have knit 2 of his sweaters and they fit perfectly. Maybe I'd be a rebel and in knit sweaters instead. 🙂

Hello Lisa. We now CAN knit all the Felici with a substitute yarn. Knit picks Stroll works great. In my sock knitting I knit 7 rounds in comparison with Felici per stripe. More or less depending on stitch count and needle size. I always knit my socks with a 72 cast on number with a US 1, 2.25 needle. So many colors and complete control on the change of each color. In memorandum of what was a fabulous self striping yarn. It will definitely be missed by all who adored that wonderful exquisite fiber.😢

I wear a 10 in some shoes and 11 in others, my daughter wears the same size as you. I do 10 extra rows for mine before starting the toe.

I think that would be an awesome idea for an MKAL next year. I have several of Stephen west’s mkals that I want to do. The first year I was going to participate was last year then I chickened out because I was a brand new knitter then. This years has been very easy for me. He has so many awesome patterns though.

My twice sheared sheep ruler is about a size off. I have to go by 1 full shoe size bigger on the sock ruler than what my actual size is

I would reknit the Rockefeller shawl. Mine actually didn't come out right. I would also like to reknit Exploration Station. I learned brioche on that shawl. simple brioche is ok, but I haven't learned to increase, or decrease. I can't fix any mistakes I just have to rip it back.

I finished clue 3 on the MKAL and see it has made a serious dent in my colour A. I started with double quantities of each colour anyway so have no fear of running out. I'm really enjoying making this shawl (much more than last year's - shh) For me KALs are a chance to be a part of a group knitting the same thing/s. Not about prizes, but all the different variations, colours and discussions. I'd enjoy participating in a past MKAL KAL. The thing is, I'm only on Ravelry apart from watching You Tube which can be limiting. Also, I've already participated in a Starflake KAL and have participated in a Stephen West marathon knit which included some past MKAL shawls and I don't think I want to double up when there are so many more things I'd like to knit. Geogradient will be my 8th MKAL shawl. Exploration Station has brioche but it is a super easy shawl to knit, and knits up fast. Go do it. I bet you'll get it done in around 1 week. I'd like to knit Texture time too. I have not done that one either. I'm not worried about the centre bit so much as the fact it has Latvian braids in it, which I love the look of but frustrate me with how they twizzle up the yarn before untwizzling it in the opposite direction.

Now when Stephen West has brioche in one of his mystery knit alongs there is a garter section if you don't want to do Brioche. I don't know about his older patterns though.

Ohhh I have been contemplating attempting to complete all the MKALs (maybe not the Color Craving one though - not sure if I like that one...)! This current year is number five for me - so nine to complete (or 8 if I skip the color craving...)

Re sock sizing. This is really, really old school and I learned this a gazillion years ago. (Yes I am old 😊). I have never had any socks not fit anyone. You have the person put a ruler on the floor up against the wall and step on the ruler with their heel against the wall. You take the measurement of the length of their foot and subtract half an inch. This amount is how long you knit the foot before you start the toe. So if their foot measures 8.5 inches you knit the foot 8 inches before you start the toe. But I only do heel flap and gusset and seeing you measure from the heel, I don't know if all the different heel patterns affect the formula.

I never find the sock sizes on the rulers to be accurate. I go by measurements and it works out. I tend to like less or no negative ease for length so my socks are longer than other people do theirs. Texture Time was my very first MKAL and I was much less experienced than I am now. With the videos it wasn't hard and I know you can do it!

Hi Lisa, I had the same trouble using the sock ruler from Twice Sheared Sheep. I knit a heel, flap and gusset sock and by the time I'm done with the gusset decreases, the heel measures 1.5 inches. So I'll knit my shoe size less 3 inches (1.5 inches for my heel and another 1.5 inches for the toe). I'm a size 9, so after I'm done with the gusset decreases, I'll knit another 7.5 inches and then I'll start my toe decreases. Hope that helps. I just use the Twice Sheared Sheep as a ruler but not for the sock measurements.

I have a number of Stephen’s patterns. I would love to join in but don’t use Instagram. ;( I got my COVID shot and the extra high dose flu shot. My arm hurt for three days, but I felt fine otherwise. I really LOVE your color choices for the MKAL (my favorite as well).

Sorry, not interested in knitting the shawls from the kal's. I do have the starflanket pattern that resembles the star flake shawl. I plan to knit it if I ever finish one of the scrappy blankets I have on the needles.
