I really appreciate this episode because I grew up in the church of Christ so when I left to a non denominational one I struggled with baptism is needed for salvation concept but JP makes a good point. What’s so special about water that cleanses your sins when it’s the blood of Jesus that does that and we just have to believe - Salvation thru faith alone. Love this podcast and these people!

It’s so vital to understand/ receive salvation the way God created it to : 1 Peter 3:18-22 with in these verses: V21 “and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also-not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,” “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” ‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:16‬ ‭NIV‬‬ Roman’s 6:1-7 within these verses: V4“We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life…. V7 “because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.” Acts 2:38 “Peter replied, repent and be baptized, everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” For the man on the cross: Mark 2:10 “But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man,” ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:4-6‬ ‭NIV “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”‬‬ Baptism is absolutely essential for salvation! It is the point and time when we participate in the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our sins are forgiven and we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. We have then died to our old life and raise into a new life with Christ and in the Kingdom of God. “Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.” ‭‭John‬ ‭3:5‬ ‭NIV‬‬ I beg of everyone to be know these truths for yourself ❣️ It’s a matter of life and death.

Absolutely. JP, brother-I believe you must really repent/rethink this meaning. I challenge you to do history homework on why baptism is now called a “symbol of profession” because it is nowhere to be found in God’s Word. I grew up Jewish and if you only take the New Testament to understand baptism you’re going to be extremely lost… which may be why today’s church is so lost on a topic so immensely huge. A believer’s baptism, according to Biblical doctrine (not Protestant, catholic, or anything else) was when a human being would be re-created through the blood and Spirit of Christ. Being born of “Water and Spirit” through God’s Word was how the cosmos was created in Genesis 1:1-3. Follow this thread throughout the Torah. The flood story, the exodus story, and priesthood’s immersion. God’s method of salvation into new creation for his covenant family (in the present age) has always been through “Water and the Spirit”. Nicodemus was curious too and Jesus expected him to understand that this is what the prophets had been prophesying about all along-Zechariah 12:1-13:1, Ezekiel 36, Isaiah 44:3, Micah 7, Joel 2-3, etc. Jesus picks right up on this thread as he is The Living Word of God and tells how to be recreated through His Name and His own blood and Spirit. Nothing removes our sins besides the blood of Christ (Hebrews 9), and our sins are removed when we are baptized into His Name (Acts 2:38, Acts 22, 1 Peter 3:21, Romans 6, Colossians 2). We come in contact with the “Blood, Water, and Spirit” as John would say in 1 John 5. Brother Jonathan, with a platform this large you can’t go about changing God’s Word with so many people listening. You mentioned our sins are not forgiven/washed away and we do not receive the Holy Spirit when we are baptized. The apostle Peter would clearly not agree as he said, “Repent (Think Differently) and be baptized-every single one of you-for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit.” He saw himself in a time where all of the prophets’ prophecies about the Kingdom and New Creation inauguration was happening through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Sh’vuot/Pentecost. Paul would later write in Ephesians 4 that there is “ONE baptism” during his Messianic version of the Sheman (which is awesome!). When you are baptized into the water, you are baptized by the Spirit of Elohim into the New Creation just like in Genesis 1, Genesis 6-8, Exodus 15, Joshua 1-4, etc. There are not “two baptisms” my brother. That’s unbiblical in of itself as the Apostle Paul has told us there is only one. I will be praying for you brother, as I have many friends who appreciate your podcast and I see the work God is doing through you. But I truly challenge you to quit listening to the voices who have compromised Messiah’s truth about His definition of baptism-which is why so many 1-3 century believers were killed on the way to being baptized… they knew that was the means Christ gave us to be washed by His Precious Blood and to be resurrected with Him into New Creation life. Hence, “If anyone is in Christ (if they have been immersed into His Name), they are a New Creation.”

Hi guys, I love your podcasts and was really interested in this because I have wrestled with understanding if baptism is necessary for salvation. I am apart of ICOC and believe that baptism is necessary but it definitely isn’t what saves us, it is Jesus and what he did for us. I want to understand more clearer what you think of it. John has stated to be baptised for the forgiveness of sins, and this “for” in Greek is “Eis” which I’ve looked into more, coming to the conclusion that it isn’t ‘because of’ but ‘for’. So since I believe that through baptism is dying to our old selves into Christ, we are renewed, not by our act or the water washing us, but is the inner work of God within us and Jesus forgiving our sins. I know one of you mentioned the thief on the cross, in which I perceive it as, Jesus had not yet died and he has the authority on earth to forgive sins then and there, so him being there in the flesh, forgave the thief on the cross, still in the old covenant. Then Jesus died and the new covenant began, where I believe in baptism and the forgiveness of sin. Of course baptism doesn’t save because in reality, we are just being dunked into water, but that representation of dying into Jesus and Gods work in us. I’m sorry it’s really long and may be all over the place, I was writing as I went. But maybe I could contact you on instagram or something? I would really love a deeper insight of what you think and specifically on the scripture in which baptism is discussed. Thank you!!

As a Baptist, I’ve never understood where the idea that baptism is primarily an “act of obedience” or “profession of faith”. That’s just not obvious to me from the Scriptures. Baptism seems to be a sign/symbol/promise provided by God to his people through his church. The “command” of baptism is in Matt 28 in the great commission and the people of God are commanded to make disciples and baptize them into the Triune Name. Command is not for the baptizand, but the baptizer.

Idts. it says in the Bible you must be born of water and of spirit. And you must be baptized in the name of Jesus. The name of the father, the son, and of the holy spirit is Jesus. A father isn't a name. The son isn't a name. The holy spirit isn't a name.

Born of the water and of the spirit is speaking on being born in the flesh and in the spirit - water is the physical birth on earth and spirit is the spiritual awakening when you confess and repent of your sin, believe Jesus died and rose again paying the price of sin for us, and putting your faith in Him! Jesus speaks on this in John 3
