In Poland, roughly 50% of the population does not believe that homosexuality is normal. As an openly gay man living in Warsaw, Tom Shay'an is reminded of this everyday.
Homosexual people exist and born every single day. It's a fact and sooner or later the whole society will have to accept this fact. It's just a matter of time.
Alicia Basically... I live in a town in western Poland (not that conservative compared to the east) and in the middle of the day I was walking down the town square. A grown man started yelling at me that he was gonna „beat the shit out of me" and that I deserve it etc because I was wearing mom jeans lol He considered it unwomanly and said something about my parents raising me wrong. He used like 19819 curse words and was very aggresive. Nobody reacted and it was in the middle of the day with many people around. I'm a 5'1 teenage girl...

Literally,I love the way,you are expressing everything. Being a gay in this world is such a difficult thing,I know but what you said in the ending part that if you could tolerate criticism and having strength then you will be the winner. The last line was heart- touching...love you from India ❤️ ❤️
In Poland people strongly believe that gay people have some characteristics 😅 like if man doesn’t have this really “sharp” and “male” look, does care about himself (like hair, skin, etc.) he’s considered to be gay or at least “not male”. That’s sad. For lesbians the stereotype is being a feminist 😅, being vegan, having colourful hair and/or short hair. Sadly we don’t have any sexual education in Poland so people mostly just don’t understand and don’t want to understand what is tolerance and why we all should be tolerant.
I wish I could help y’all..I wish other countries would help Poland’s LGBTQ+ community. Never give up, fight for your rights. A lot of love and support from Romania 🇷🇴! Love always wins 🏳️🌈💜
@@_o..o_1871 I don’t think so. I’ve noticed that 99,9% of people are not aggressive, understand that it’s not their business and accept them as they are. Yeah maybe they will make a cringe look if the will see two boys kissing each other, but that’s all, and most of them just don’t do that in public, so it’s not like is a real problem, and they will make a cringe look even if the kiss is between a boy and a girl. 😂 The only problem that they are struggling with is that they cannot legally marry, but that’s the situation in most of the countries and it doesn’t affect them that much.
That's so sad. What is happening in Poland? I have been living in Vancouver, Canada for the past two years. And I haven't heard any antipathy towards LGBT people or other religious minority people. I feel like Canada is a wonderful place to live on this planet. If he wants to live in a different country than definitely choose Canada for sure.
Germain Martel Just like gay people, the Muslims are a minority, what you just said sounds a little racist. Muslims face racism, gay people face homophobia and so on.Therefore if we want to make the world a better place we have to be more open to those around us regardless of their background, beliefs, race and sexual orientation. As a side note, I know many Muslim people that are very open minded. They know about me and we are good friends.✌🏻
I have been in Canada and i used to live in Poland, is about mentality, Canada is the opposite of Poland. Poland is a wonderful country but if you are gay feminine you might have troubles in the street sometimes, i say it because of my experience, the bus and the tram are dangerous places since all the attacks that i suffered took place in that situations, this country is not socially advanced regarding inmigration and gays.
Enkai pritie Immigration? No one wants to move to Poland🤣 they can keep their immigration laws as they are...Side note: The UK is full of polish people and all of them have rights and so on...so it’s a little hypocrite when polish people are against other people moving to Poland😅😂.
@@45tibi Polish people in general are good people and when i was in Poland they helped me even more than in Spain or UK, but is true that they still conservative regarding gays issues and yes inmigration, some people ( the people who has not been educated and have not travel) do not accept gays or people of other countries. And must say, that in the UK ,they are also not open to foreigner people anymore since there are too many inmigrants in the country and i saw in the news many times attacks to spanish people in England while these people were talking in Spanish, however in Spain, we do not bother people from other countries since we are used to it and we live from tourism however we are having issues from people coming from north Africa that are making trouble to the country and the situation is changing for worst
Polish guys are gorgeous. I had a Polish boyfriend when I lived in NYC. Funny thing is he hated America and eventually went back to Poland which broke my heart. Yes, I am a man if you are wondering, and gay. I would love to visit Poland one day but not sure if the gay scene is great. I don't know if they would like me because I am American, Latino, and gay. Maybe I'll go to London or Amsterdam but I just think Polish men are so hot.
@Benito Swaggolini Please, don't use "We" in YOUR opinion. Not every Pole is like you and thinks this way. For example, I don't want you to speak for me.
@@magdalenapawlikowska4907 Well, "you" is actually the typical western thinking. It's not your opinion, it's the one the west gave you thanks to their soft power. He is actually rightfully stating that if a foreigner comes, he must respect Poles and Poland. Maybe you don't deserve respect or behave as a savage in foreign countries, but that shouldn't be the case for people who are coming over to Poland.
@@radoslawpazder7291 If any foreigner comes to any country - they need to behave and be respectful. That's just obvious. Also Poles should respect other people who come visit. If not because of decency then at least because they leave their money here and support Polish businesses when visiting. What is not respectful is assuming that all Poles think the same and are the same. That is fortunately not true, cause that would make this country a real hellhole.
@@WinterWerewolf it's not that obvious. If it were I wouldn't have stated it. I don't understand why you are addressing your comment to me actually I never said that someone who rightfully deserves respect must not be respected
I love what you said in the video. "Being a victim is a state of mind" so please, continue being yourself and live the way you do because you're a beautiful soul. It makes me cry when I see what's happening in Poland. Sending lots of love to you and all the people who are being constantly stripped of their rights to love, to live and be their true self. They fear you because they're not brave enough to give love, to express their real needs. Hatred is easy, following the crowd is easy.. Standing against it is not! That's why they shout and abuse you verbally... Because they're scared of the real honest people who let their souls shine in the sunlight!
I go to the Polish equivalent of high school and I am harassed very often despite the fact that neither I nor my boyfriend do anything wrong. Their excuse is that it may disgust some people but we never do anything intimate in public, we don't even hug. It all started when we were sitting together on the train and I put my head on my boyfriend's shoulder and someone from school took a picture of us and then posted it on the Internet. Since then a lot of people have been harassing us, we told teachers but their warnings don't work or they don't give a damn about us. We plan to leave this country someday because the chances of things changing are small, but for now we just have to survive.
Are you an Arab? I checked your profile and saw that you had an Arabic video. I am an Arab too and I never saw another Arab gay! I hope nothing but the best for you!
Thank you for this video! Keep your head held high... Your brave, your beautiful but most importantly your YOU! I will be visiting Warsaw and Krakow in September with my Husband 🇬🇧 🇵🇱 🏳️🌈
You are not the only one who suffered those attacks, i am from Spain and i used to live in Poland, i had sometimes homophobic attacks verbally in Poland in the streets and the public transport for me this was not normal, since in Spain rarely we have those issues, in Spain people do not care. I had to buy a bicycle to commute to work because i was affraid to take the bus. Attacks can happen anytime, but not always, depends of who's in the bus and if the person is under alcohol in which case it can be worst.
Izabella Abramowicz Warszawa 👍🏻, I liked Poland, but being gay in Poland as you know.. is not so easy.. Eastern part of Poland is worst, I think Poznan and Katowice is better.
Izabella Abramowicz I am sad to read this 😕, you just have to be careful in public places.. you know what I mean.. it is very interesting how in Czech Republic and Slovakia the situation is not like that.. in Czech Republic is not a problem
Being Gay anywhere in the world is difficult. I'm from Los Angeles, 75 years of age. Me growing up in a Roman Catholic family was difficult to say the least. Never give up on yourself and always remember, no one is more Beautiful than you and who you are inside your Heart. You have as much right to live " Your Life " as anybody else on this planet. Stay strong and smile big. 💗🤟 Peace and love.
On behalf of all poles i disenvow your polisz citizenship. Poles do not do anything unless provoked. Would you behave in the same way if you went to saudi arabia? No because you know the culture wouldnt approve. So stop trying to provoke people who just want to live a peaceful life.
I remember hiding people who were being persecuted by the Police for being in Solidarity - their sacrifice is for all peoples of Poland to be free from this kind of senseless discrimination
XDDDDDDD gopr w porównaniu do lgbt . How many people were arrested because they were just gay? Think how many people have been arasted do to wanting to have demcrocy in a communist shithole of a country
,,Warsaw is very open compared to the rest of Poland”, what about Wrocław for example ? Poland is mentally divided to west (more catholic) and east (more anti-uropean) and generations (young and elders). In westernt Poland, in city like Wrocław there is not much homophobia than in eastern city Białołystok where fascist groups like ONR have thier headquarters.
It's not because most of western world is stupid and uses words they don't even know the definition of that everybody have to do the same. If ONR is fascist, then Hitler was a little crybaby and we can doubt him committing atrocities because ONR likes to show off, but nothing really serious actually, or very rarely serious. Hardly "fascist" or at least neo-fascist, but that's it
@@Dokuzu technicly, you are fighting for your own country if you stand in the way of abuse to someday maybe see the society your country change towards acceptance of all people, you should look up Dietrich Boenhoffer who stayed christian in nazi germany with the possibility of fleeing, though staying for his country, he was a hero

My partner and I are thinking of heading to Poland in January. We are big fans of Aga Radwanska and Polish, but after some research - especially reading comments from Government ministers and the Archbishop of Krakow, we are really afraid.
If you are a normal person dont spend your money in an homophobic society, you can go with your Partner for example to Spain or Canada and not to thesee kibd of places. Support them with your money is a very bad desition from my perspective.

This is a real shame. I've wanted to visit Poland (Krakow in particular) with my boyfriend but I've been steadily put off by reports of homophobia. Aside form being downright anti-human rights, it's actually economically counterproductive to deter LGBT tourists because they often are statistically more likely to be affluent and spend money on luxury hotels, hipstery shops, foodie places etc.
You have more homophobic hate attacks in London than in the whole of Poland... www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/almost-55-homophobic-hate-attacks-in-london-every-week-a4331121.html Are you going to visit London?
Portugal was like that 30-40 years ago, but fortunately it changed so much, as you can see in some videos. I hope Polish will also open theis minds and change. Be strong and survive, you will be respect in your country someday, soon, I hope.
This reminded me of this one time, when my cousin (who I considered safty space), outed me, in front people who clearly weren't safe. They were saying stuff like "If you would have slept with me you wouldn't be gay anymore" and I wasn't sure if he will do something to me, or he was just joking. I regrets that I didn't just go away then, but I was stupid, shy and younger. I were thinking "It's not that big deal" "He is in my age, he is not going to something like that", but that was big deal for me. This guys are living in small city where I go to school, so I still seeing them sometimes and they accosted me few times. They know my name, they know where I'm go to school. It scaries me.

i consider myself gay. but you are speaking bullsh... If you feel scared of guys punching you just act/walk normal. Theres no need to walk like in a runaway or demostrating that you are gay.
It hurts that this story is being normal in lots of societies and at the same time this kind of people are capable to change it! I believe he is and he will be happy!
i wish it will be better, my dad said to me when I did my coming out that i am disgusting to him, becouse God didn't made me that way... i belive one day I will be able to hold hands with my girlfriend in public without fear! 🇵🇱🌈
This was not good that they called you disgusting and you have the right to be upset but you also need to see the situation from another perspective. Your parents want to raise you correctly so you would have a good future. They want you to teach you to be a good and normal person with a husband and kids who will give the family descendants. You need to understand that the way you want to live is wrong and you will notice it with time. Christianity will lead you on the right way even if it is hard to do how god wants u to do it is worth it and you will have 100% a good life. If you reject god now you won't be happy with time. You will notice that something is missing in your life. If this moment comes feel free to go to Church.. I like talking with lgbt people if they are polite, even if I am against lgbt I would like to understand them and their story :)) Remember: the choice is yours
You do realise you could just not tell your parents? I dont get the pont of coming out to your parents if you know they will be disapointed, just dont mention it to them, problem solved.

It 's very hard. He can thanks all those priors and religious people. Poland is not a laïc country. This country don't need to stay in Europe. We can make a boycott.
I can understand perfectly his feeling. I am not from Poland, I am from Italy but last summer when my boyfriend and I were in Warsaw I remeberer that while we were wolking in a mall near the palace of culture and science my boyfriend gave my a kiss, a young boy who were next to us looked us with disgusting. I understood that Poland is a very conservative country and I feel very sad when I hear stroy like this.
@MCADHD666 VOL2 pardon me? Its a different type of disgust, the man knew exactly what he was saying when he made that statement. Also its disgust not disgusting in the sentence he wrote

I am Hungarian and in my country bejng gay is still a taboo if you are not in Budapest. Budapest is like Warsaw as being capital the atmosphere is more tolerant and cosmopolitan.
Quite a contrast! I see how a brave young man from an oppressive country seeks strenght inside him and overcomes his woes. Pretty different from the US and many other well developed regions where people indulge themselves in self victimization in a pretty safe and open minded environment...
I’m pretty sure it’s not even that bad in Poland. These people exaggerate everything most of the time people don’t say anything if u don’t provoke them or do something for them to react.
I do think so, I lived in Poland for 4 years and my gf is from Kraków. What this guy tells does not only happen to gays, also to foreign people, blacks, asians, atheists, islamics, etc. I could not even speak in Spanish in some places/situations because it was dangerous. I also was verbally injured and threatened several times during those years, despite I always tried to avoid these situations.
I can't agree with his statements I understand he has bad personal expierience but it is not representative for the whole society. I have many, many friends who are gays and many of them are occuping high social status and have zero prolblems with they every day life on the street. Even more in the country society is much more open than in a big cities where the life is more stressful abd you have bigger chance to encounter with patology like he described with his personal expierience.
Recognice you are part of a minority, and that most of people would not like to live the way you do. Keep your private life private, you don't care about straights, why would they care about you? Being the "victim drama queen" always attracts negativity. And support traditional values with space for exceptions like you. And be a contributing part in society, not a burden. Then they will value your diversity.
Polish people are not bad,but a little slow, it took thousand years for Poland to accept Christianity(until10th centuryy) it will take time for them to accept gay rights.
Seriously, he is true hero because? he try to be visible as a gay, that's what is to be a hero? Never occurred to him that nobody have to know about his sexuality, nobody have to know that he is a gay. What you doing in a bedroom is your and your only business, keep it for yourself like most of normal people do. Someone said that be a victim is state of mind and he have to continue be who he is. I think he is confused. Because he created this video to show he is not a victim any more but on this video showing nothing more than Poland is homophobic country and how victimize he feels, I've seen two girls hold their hands all thought I have no clue if they were gay's or not because LGBT sympathizers or regular teenage girls thinking that if their hold their hands they'll feel or look special and no one absolutely no one said anything to them, guys on the bus occasionally hold their hands and hug each other people looked, they did, but no even one person said anything and that was in the south of Poland not in a big city. What I'm thinking is that he is not trying to be strong or cope with homophobia this all LGBT Q this whole movement trying to make majority to accept what they are doing let them adopt children and accept gay marriages.I will tell you something in Poland LGBT movement are laughing of our religion destroying religious portraits everything for as they shouting "Love not hate" The same people coming on every event In Poland religion is everything to us help us to cope with communism and now my point if LGBT hates the religion in general why the hell they want have a marriage in church. Now a days even straight's don't wanna get marriage. I like gay's but I hate movement especially activists. Just be yourself go to people let them know you for what person you are not what sexuality you are.
All do respect but any movement or ideology shouldn't be assigned to the constitution we Poles put in to constitution eternal friendship with USSR so should be like this we can' tolerate you take it or leave it. No constituing their rights its top much. With this activists is bacicaly like that... Give them finger.. well you knows the rest
just like that, "do what you want to do at home"... is exactly pure homophobia. Please don't say to anyone that you have a boyfriend, or a husband, don't you there hold hands or hug in public.. please keep your sexuality hidden in your home, in your bedroom... say those words to urself miss.
@@TheTomShayan Exactly. People with this kind of reasoning don't even understand that they are denying gay people the right to exist within society altogether. Imagine you are at work and most informal discussions are like "how is your wife/kids/whatever... ?". At some point, sexuality is a part of your public image, whether you want it or not and you can't hide it except if you are going to stay alone at your place your whole life and not have a professional life.
The problem when you give rights to gay people is that they will grab after another right which will eventually affect the childhood of children and other things Every child has the right to have a mother and a dad This isn't a question of tolerance anymore it's about the family
@@kavguy imaging using religion to persecute a minority, despite the fact that religion of state is not a thing anymore. If Poland wants to become the Christian equivalent of the Islamic state, they can pack it up and get out from the EU
