Reduced oxygen to the muscle when you reduce the blood flow. This does remind me of the book you recommended Paul, "Breathe" by James Nestor. In that book there were stories of deep free-divers who went over 10 minutes without equipment diving underwater. And as far as I understood from the story, they had no problems, no complaints about it, and they said they were "ordinary people" like "you and me" (well you're not ordinary weak person Paul, and Im neither, but you know what I mean). That they kept at it, and practiced so much some of them could be underwater without equipment for over 10 minutes at a time, that tells me that in diving like that there's some benefits like in the breathing techniques and the BFR workouts, and the high-altitude workouts like mountain climbing. Very interesting. Thank you! Mikko Murmeli
Thanks Paul, I really enjoyed this episode. I tried out a BFR-style workout yesterday for leg day. I did 4 sets of very very lightweight squats (the bar + 5 kg) for 30 reps each. Then I did the same routine for leg press and lunges. Mike mentioned that he hasn’t been sore for years and I woke up today more sore than I’ve been in a long time. To me, that feels good and it feels like I am actually about to grow. My question is, doesn’t producing more lactic acid actually make you MORE sore and necessitate even better recovery? I’m confused where Mike is coming from by saying that he’s never sore anymore. Maybe I pushed it too hard for my first time trying the BFR technique. Thank you 🙏🏼
what would be a good Reps, Sets, load tempo, TUT and intensity using BFR technique for a bodybuilder? Using Eugene Sandows light dumbbell method with the BFR technique could be very interesting.
Hi, Things are a bit different with BFR than without it. It is not the exercise load and related variables that trigger the hypertrophy response as is the case with bodybuilding or strength training in general. It is the oxygen debt created, usually with quite light weights and the resulting hypoxia and anoxia that starves the slow twitch fibers (oxidative fibers) of oxygen, triggering a lot of lactic acid production and forcing the fast twitch fibers to be activated that is coupled with nitric oxide production as a stimulus for growth hormone production by the body. Therefore, as we discussed in the podcast, mixing BFR training with standard bodybuilding with the typical acute exercise variables allows one to get the anabolic hormone response to trigger muscle growth but with a lot less physical stress on the body. Unfortunately they don’t :( I’ve been checking their website periodically to see if they started but not as of yet. There is another website called healf that has their products that ship in the UK though it’s a bit limited. But better than nothing! Hopefully the people at paleo valley, bioptimisers and organifi realise that there’s a lot of people in the UK that would love their products and start shipping to us or paul could tell them 😂
