Legacy. Meaning. Fulfillment. In the end, these are all things most artists seek. When I think about my own photography, I would happily trade all the likes and follows on social media to be known for something I'm proud of.
Today's guest on the F-Stop Collaborate and Listen Podcast, Bruce Barnbaum, has over fifty years of photography under his belt and has recently undertook the process of revisiting his legacy and his work in the hopes of producing a book showcasing never-before seen images captured along his illustrious career. Having studied under Ansel Adams himself, Bruce is a well-known print-maker and book author, having sold over 100,000 copies of his book, The Art of Photography: amzn.to/42O5EZF

On this week's episode, we discuss:
-How Bruce began his journey in photography all the way back in the 1960's.
-The importance of conservation efforts and how they have guided Bruce's work.
-How Bruce incorporated music into his early books.
-Bruce's approach to composition.
-Bruce's upcoming book project which will be a retrospective review of unreleased work from over five decades of photography.
-And a lot more!

I used the knowledge of both Bruce and Fred Picker, along with the works of John Sexton, to guide my work when I was shooting large format. Looking forward to receiving his book Discoveries of a Lifetime.

Wao, Bruce’s photography book, The Art of Photography, is sooo well written. It’s not really a detail technical book but he goes deep down into the philosophy and psychology of how to create artistic photography, and what makes a great photograph. He is an incredible writer, and apart from the fact that he is also a masterfull artist, I believe Bruce uses his scientific background to elucidate what makes his natural and even human-made subjects interesting from that perspective. The Art of Photography stands up there with the likes of Ansel Adam’s three volume books. In fact, the style of writing of this book lends a continuity to those three Ansel’s volumes, as if it’s the fourth much needed volume from the master himself on composition to strengthen the pre-visualization aspects that he so much talked about. As an added bonus there is a chapter on the digital zone system in the latest edition, the missing chapter from Ansel’s books. I just can’t say enough of how wonderful a writer Bruce is. We need more writers like him in general. There are just some people that can communicate in a way that inspire you to think a bit more about the topic at hand; he is one of them. He has a second book and I am ready to go through that one. If I had the money, I would definitely go on a photographic adventure with him to pick his brain. It has to be full of wisdom that just can’t be captured in one or even two books. What an amazing career.

Wow great episode Matt! Really loved watching this one, I actually paused listening as a podcast on my commute and switched over to RU-vid at home to see the visuals, so glad I did! What a treat Mr Barnbaum and his images were!

How comes I never noticed Bruce???? I think I missed out some major inspiration! Thanks so much for also showing his work and talk about the images!!!! That really gives so much more meaning to the photographers work instead of just talking about it! Please consider doing this more often!!!!

Yeah, I think this format worked really well even with the significant lag that existed which required a lot of editing after the fact. It just depends on whether or not guests are willing to do this. Thanks for your time and I appreciate it.

Surprisingly I've only just learned of Bruce and his stunning works and halfway through this I searched for updates of the book he mentions. I'm sad to see I missed the kickstarter by a month and a half and wonder if you might know if the book will go on general sale later?

I've been a fan of Bruce's photos since the late 1980s. I was fortunate to take a B&W printing class with him. I'm so glad you were able to get him on the podcast.
