Yes. At the end of the day, there's a max capacity of irradiance the coral can take, per photoperiod. You can play with the intensity and time to extend or shorten the photoperiod (given that you're in the right PUR spectrum). When one goes up the other must come down. It's the sum that matters (you can work around an average number and go above and then below for equal amounts of time). Allow a period of complete darkness as well is super important. This is great news I can have my lights on for 12hrs. I was always told no more then 8 hrs for my light cycle. You mentioned a moon light period is that already installed in Red Sea's lights? Where do you buy Red Sea lights from?
Mary, with many lights it's not as straight forward as it seems and the recommendation you got my still be valid, as different lights produce different outputs and your user setting might add too much of the unutilized spectrum to cause heat damage on top of not getting enough PUR or getting too much of it in a shorter period. What if i'd like to have the lights on until 9pm. So i should start the lights from 9am right? But my tank is outside the house and can get indirect lights starting at 6am. What is your recomendation? Coz my only time is during 6pm onwards at home after office.
Hi, ideally the photoperiod would be equal to the dark period. Set your LED to come on as early as you can. If you're home between 6-9pm, you can set it to 10am-9pm (standard setting), perhaps consider to cancel the moonlight.
Aviad, I recently purchased the RedSea Deluxe 350 with AI Hydra 26 lights. Is there a range of settings I should be using with these lights to make sure I am staying inside the Reef-Spec parameters?
First of all lose the reds and greens, up the UV, V, RY, B to the max and set the white between 0-50%. You might have to play with the intensity\acclimation if it's too high and causing photoinhibition.
@@Redseafish hmm. That sounds scary. I have all the blue spectrum lights at 45% and a PAR meter I rented still reads 50 on the bottom of the tank with the lights 11 inches above the water. I started a couple of cheap sps corals after the tank had been up 4 months using AI's recommended settings and both frags bleached and died within 2 weeks. These lights are powerful!
@@hbforeman That's why there's an acclimation mode. Use it to reduce the intensity and gradually work its way up to allow the corals to get used to the light. give it a good 60 days. and watch for the signs of photoinhibition.

I like my tanks in bright light much white, i got 2 led lights pipe and i bought reefled90 but if i Only use reef90s i find it to be quit dark in my tank and very blue even if i set down the blue and increse the white its stil pretty dark i allmost perfer original t5 lights or ledpipes cause i really like high daylight white for my tanks
With my previous led lights, the white color detonate more than the blues (and I like it).. when I started with the Red Sea 90s, my lights are in 65% blue and 55% white and both percentages I decreased by 5% because start to bleach some acros (I considering the length between water surface and the coral). I read the PUR-PAR% table. But my question is.. Can I have the same PUR/PAR % if I want to have more white than blue color?
if i lower the intensity , can i longer the photoperiod ? i have reefled 90 , softies / LPS dominant as i plan. my tank still in cycling process.. 90 x 60 x 50 cm.. whats your recomendation profile for this ? 50% blue ? i dont have par meter over here.
You can, however without a way to measure it, we would recommend not to exceed the time on the preset. As for each hour of light you need an hour of complete darkness to allow the photo-system to discharge. The profile is up to you and what your eye likes. Start with 100B and use acclimation (or reduce intensity) if it's too strong. As for the white channel use as much as makes the tank look nice to you. It doesn't really matter to the corals.
I have a question which no one seems to be able to answer. A lot of LED lights and bulk reef supply say that the WIDER blue spectrum is needed for best coral growth and colour. The fixtures you have tend to have a narrower peak. What im asking is based on your research is the wider blue spectrum needed better
We have over 30 years of coral growth research and we looked into every aspect of the animal's life. The spectrum we are using in the Reef Spec blue is ideal for what the coras-zoox complex (it's not "just zoox" alone or just coral alone) needs for optimal growth and wellbeing. Since energy doesn't get lost everything outside that PUR range will turn into heat and a damage potential.
Red Sea thank you... so even though the blue part of the spectrum is not as wide as other led fixtures in the market you would say in your research this is the BEST spectrum and was created intentionally? Im thinking of switching to the red sea lights but wasnt sure about the spectrum etc
@@Redseafish I think he spoke about the spectrum that is narrow in the pur range,you can have a larger still stay in the pur ,for example some lights have a larger blue same kessil ,why you choose a narrow blue instead of large?
I don't know which is the exactly the intensitive the spectrum of light. i have a redsea 300 XL, but it difficult to know the kind of light or quantity of light i need , i put 100 % blue , but de white light is difficult. i had 100% white light over 6 hour, but some coral has been death. Now have 50 % whit 6 hour less intensity. Some tips for me , to my reef ? Yhanks a lot
curious thought and hope you are able to provide some insight: 1) is the UV light of 360 - 400 nm given off by Red Sea reef led harmful to human? 2) are the blue lights given off by Red Sea reef led harmful to human eyes or are blue lights harmful in general? there is some information out there describing blue lights to be capable of causing permanent damage to human eyes leading to blindness.
The ReefLED has been tested and certified RG1 (Low Risk) according to the European safety standard EN 62471:2008 which tests the photobiological safety of LED luminaires. The lens of the ReefLED has been recessed into the body of the unit specifically to limit the residual light and glare from the unit. Some common sense should be exercised when using ANY reef lights as they all have predominantly blue light and looking directly at any intense light source should be avoided.
yes, as the light coming from the outside is still being detected by the animals. While it may be enough to not interfere with the discharge of the zoox's photosystem, the circadian clock and hormonal regulatory systems will still be affected. How exactly and the severity, that's worth many years of research to get to a conclusion. So unfortunately other than a "yes, but" we cannot give you a definitive and conclusive answer. Similar to the effect of you living upside down with the clock ;)
According to Echotechmarine, "The SPS AB+ program has a photo period of 7 hours for the core spectrum with a one hour ramp up and ramp down (9 hour total photoperiod). In a non-commercial setup where viewing is a priority - these ramp periods would be the optimal time to experiment with a desirable viewing spectrum." If the Red Sea recommendation is correct, then you may need to manipulate the intensity to account for the shorter photoperiod. It’s clear you only want to sell your new light. Corals aren’t finicky creature in regard to lighting. I have used several settings of my Sanrise LED and corals were vibrant and colorful despite the settings. They can adjust to lighting by increasing/decreasing their zooxantelae unless lighting is awful. What is important to corals is *stability*.
While corals can live in various conditions, we strive to give the the ideal conditions. You can give them the "wrong" (or a bit off) conditions, HOWEVER they will spend a lot of energy trying to correct it. It goes for Calcium\KH\Mg as well as salinity and spectrum. At the end of the day, we try to minimize the energetic demand by the corals. The coral biology hasn't changed much over millions of years. The more we research the more we can give these amazing creatures exactly what they need. If you can provide your coals with the ideal conditions that conserve the most energy, that extra energy will be funneled towards growth and coloration, improve their response to stress etc. So it's not all about selling a light fixture, but providing the complete solution (water parameters, circulation, light) for corals to thrive in.
We actually talked about it on episode #3. You're right, however the % of Peridinin out of the whole photosystem (acpPC) is about 15% and though the max excitation is at 502/526nm, we have found that it starts even at 490nm (which is at the slope of the peak of the RS reef spec blue) which gives you enough to excitate the entire complex efficiently.
One more thing you need to remember is that the the zoox is embedded in the coral's tissue. Energy cannot be lost, it transforms. Any unutilized energy, is absorbed and transforms into heat, can create free radicals, and damage the coral's tissue. The red wavelength will get absorbed by the tissue before it can reach to the zoox causing more harm than good.
