As somebody who has traveled quite a bit overseas, I can tell you that "culture shock" is a real thing, and sometimes it can be a slow build. Often, when the thrill of being in a new place wears off, you are just left with the dislocation, inconvenience and lack of routine. You're smart to be aware of how that is affecting your mood, and to readjust your outlook accordingly. It's like a runner getting a second wind.

When I was 22 years old I went to Germany. It was my first time out of the US. I knew little Deutch and was alone. Whew, I ate apples, bread, butter, cheese and jelly with water for 6 weeks because I was too ashamed to try harder. Eventually, I learned enough German to eat and to find my way back and forth. I learned to try, even if I seemed a bit silly. Some folks will respect that and help. They really dislike arrogant Americans who don’t try. Texas

Last week I walked a week of the Camino and loved it. Today im sitting in bed with flu watching your 4 Camino episodes and loved them. It's motivating me to put together a little video of my experience. I can't wait to go back and do more. Have an amazing rest of your trip and thank you for your lovely videos💜

I'm glad you've had the opportunity to have this experience. It sounds like even a "grizzled ol' Triple Crown through-hiker" as yourself can learn some new things along the way. Thanks for having us all along on your trip. It looks like Montana is having a good experience, too.

The Camino isn't a backpacking trip or hike although it does involve both of those activities. It's a pilgrimage that people have been doing for over 1000 years - you're walking in history and culture. I walked some of it in September and what an amazing experience - far different to any of my walks here in Australia.

I love that your channel kind of informs me of what trails to avoid. Not that it seems so bad, its just the opposite of what I'm personally looking for when I go hiking. In addition to bed bugs , sleeping next to a group of people means you are more likely to get the common cold and stuff, although I imagine it also gradually builds your resilience to that as your immune system learns and adapts to more strains. For me , I'd still take a tent.

Dixie, once again, fantastic job of taking us along. A few years ago a friend and I went on a ski trip in southern Alberta and stayed in a hostel room that we had to ourselves. When I returned from the washroom(Canadian for restroom lol) before turning in for the night I found a new pair of earplugs on my pillow. My friend was quite concerned that he would keep me awake with his snoring. Super considerate guy. I Lao use them after night shifts when my neighbours cut their lawns when I need to sleep. The little foam earplugs really work. Take care and safe travels.

Been following you since Amicalola state park.... it’s been amazing to see you go from “deer-in-the-headlights” novice, to experienced hiker... to expert backpacker... to guide with your mom... to friend/sister/guide/mother to your own sister. ... not quite sure what is next... but with a selfish sense of pride and admiration, i am certain that what ever it is.... you will do it well. Thank you... for the years of education, enjoyment and inspiration you have provided.

With long term international travel I find the homesick hits at about week two. I always tell myself I'll be a stronger person for getting through it and pressing on. So far I haven't been wrong. The more I travel though, the less homesick happens, and the more excited I am for that unique opportunity to re-experience the thrill new moments bring - those I'll remember forever.

Told a friend about my channel name, and apparently she watches yours a great deal, and directed me that way. Glad she did! Fantastic travel and adventure content. Also can very much relate to the varied accessibility and expectations of showering... have worked as a wildlife biologist for quite a while, and the cleaning process can be challenging in places! Makes me appreciate access when I have it all the more.

Culture shock hits all of us sooner or later; I had a crisis moment of not being able to handle the newness of everything pretty bad after moving across the atlantic to work, and I only had to shift from the USA to England! Not nearly as much to handle as the language barrier can be. It's good to acknowledge it, do something familiar, and then push on through. Really enjoying seeing your experience out of the country!

Dixie/Montana....there's all kinds of camping: the thru hiking kind, glamping, RVs, and this thing, the el camino. Personally, the ONLY type of camping I want to do is....the thru hiking type. To get AWAY from most people and vestiges of society, purposefully. Except when I need supplies and a sliver of social. To have to hear the snores of others, in a communal room, etc. ISN'T what I'm into.....because after-all, I HAVE to go thru that in my dad's RV, and I don't do it well! (I literally camp outside in a separate backpacker tent)

Beautiful views from Torres del Río to Sansol. I flew the drone early in the morning and Sansol’s shadow covered Torres del Rio. Very lucky to spend a night without snoring people! Buen Camino is not what we think, in the past, pilgrims would say “Ultreia” which means sort of like “Keep on going” or I encourage you to keep going. So “Buen Camino” is not are you having a good day? Rather, have a good day/ trip. A good tip is that the pilgrims office is right before you cross the bridge in Logroño. There, they give you a free map and a discount book, plus your stamp for your credential.

I'm reading a lot of people who seen disappointed that the Camino isn't a typical through hike. Bluntly, it's pretty radically different and most people that do it aren't doing a "thru-hike". They're doing a pilgrimage. Part of what makes the Camino what it is is the people you meet and talk to and walk with. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with not wanting that, but that was my experience and almost everyone else's that I met. I averaged 18 km a day, with a max of about 30km. Was it an intense hike? Sure. It was different than a wilderness hike, and if that's what this want, this isn't for you... But it was amazing....

You have made it to wine country! Some of the best parts of the trail! Snoring is almost guaranteed in the camino, but everyone sleeps with earplugs...do you not have cheap foam earplugs? Makes a huge difference. Since you are not following the normal stages then you probably are going to a lot of less typical towns... so there should be fewer people and less snoring in general. For washing, some of the private albergues have washing machines. Often times people share a load and you save washing by hand those days which is a nice break from the constant hand washing. You are expected to be clean, but many people re-use the dirty clothes for two or three days since it is just going to get dirty anyways and they keep the clean/after-shower clothes separate so they are not stinky in the village/albergue. Have you made any trail friends? It might be harder at your pace. One tradition is to make friends going at the same rythm and start staying at the same places, cooking pasta dinners together, etc. It is like having a family on the trail... but harder if you are not doing the "typical" stages.

I lived abroad for about an year and half, I understand homesick and not being able properly communicate. If I can offer some of my experience I have 2 advices: 1° Be curious, it doesn't matter how long you've been in a place there is always something or someone new and interesting. 2° respect your limits, it's not only your body that will give you signals, your mind can do the same. Get of schedule if you can, take a day to wonder around with no mission but to do nothing. People often think they are wasting time if they're not on a mission when travelling but I found that sometimes sitting on a bench or wonder around just observing people come and go with their normal lives can be quite fulfilling.

Very interesting perspective and the differences in this trail are striking. While I appreciate the history of it, I don’t think I’d ever do this trail. For me personally I hike to get away from people, noise, cities and interactions and want to revel in solitude and nature, so going through towns as often as you are doing would end up removing most of where I draw solace. But even if this trail isn’t for me I greatly enjoy and appreciate the work you put into sharing it! Happy trails.

I love that you did this, as it's a nice stark expose of the differences for those of us who need wilderness and quiet vs those who want to be a pilgrim in towns with lots of people. The other week I was hiking through a state forest and the trail went right down the middle of a clear-cut. The replanted saplings were all protected by white plastic tubes which made the whole thing look a bit like Arlington Cemetery. Understandably this put me in a somber mood but after a while it occurred to me, this was not a cemetery I was hiking through, it was a nursery. Quick fix for my somber mood, change of perspective.

My second was so much better and the difference was that we'd start every day a couple of hours before sunrise. That way you're going to feel fresh and get a fair chunk of your day done in the cool and gentle air of those magic hours before dawn. Sometimes the second time around turns out to be so much better than the first. You should seriously consider doing the AT a second time. For me the second time around was so much more enjoyable simply because I knew what I was in store for me for the next 5 months. Soon, now, 2020 will be my third "tour" of the AT and I am genuinely curious as to what to emotionally expect....and Im looking forward to it. Then in 2021 it will be the PCT. I am amazed by the explosion of hikers attempting to thruhike the PCT compared to even just 5 years ago. Personally, I truly enjoy the social aspect of these trails in comparison to, say, something like the CDT...which I have no real desire, at this time anyway, to accomplish. But my congrats to you as a new Triple-Crowner...something to be incredibly proud of. It would be a pleasure to bump into you somewhere, someday....

There'sa pilgrimage trail of sorts on the Japanese island of Shikoku. It's the Shikoku 88 temples. I think you'd find it fascinating and there are some very interesting insects in Japan as well as cheap hot springs to soak in at the end of the day... It would be culturally challenging although Japanese rural people are quite friendly and kind, but the scenery of Japan is really nice and did I mention those hot springs?

Been loving your videos since the AT. One suggestion if you do more hikes like this. A map would be great. We can picture where you are (roughly) in the US, but after watching today’s video, it had me thinking, “it’d be nice to see your progress/location on a map every so often.” I subscribe to Darwin as well, and I don’t remember him showing a map of his Scotland hike more than once or twice. And a while back I watched Will Wood/Red Beard do the Overland Track in Tasmania, and I don’t remember having him note on a map where he was there, either. Maybe it’s just the fact that I’m a design engineer who works in CAD and I’m a visual thinker who likes to see how things are laid out. ☺️

Adjust your walking poles to arm pits length! Otherwise they are not helpfull... Only skiing downhill is somewhat shorter. Nice weather , but IT snowed allready in the Sierra de Gredos! Have fun having good sleep and voor!

Torres del Rio was such a funny little village, we stayed at a different Albergue down the hill but we had the best dinner at La Pata De Oca, it's run by such a lovely woman!

I understand the language barrier. Spent some homesick time adventuring in Brazil and I don’t really speak Portuguese well at all.

yeah, i mean the Camino isn't a wilderness hike so keeping clean is expected. It used to take me about 2 hours after checking into an alberque to sort my bed, gear and have a shower and do laundry. I loved the routine after a while, every day the same, no stress or thinking just walking, talk to people if you want. Listen to music, read. Happy days.

Hey Dixie, I haven't actually watched any of your videos in awhile but wanted to share something here (I miss hiking so much, and I've been watching Corey on the PCT :) I follow Mark Horvath / Invisible People, on RU-vid, and he recently posted an interview w a man who is hiking the AT north to south. Mark interviewed him in Harrisburg, PA, which means this hiker is going to be in some really cold weather if he continues through the fall and winter, even though he's hiking south. I wanted to post info here in the hopes that you and others might see it and maybe someone / someones could help him. I won't post the link because am not sure how that works on RU-vid, but the name of the video is "Harrisburg Homeless Man is Trying to Find Himself after Son Died." Since I am not currently hiking and lost my job last week, I'm not in a position to do trail magic per se, or in the best position to try and help him have what he needs warmth-wise (gear) if he continues through these cool and cold seasons. Thanks!!!

Welcome to what I call the expat doldrums. It's that awkward point after the new and exciting wears off and before you can actually assimilate. I've been overseas quite a bit and it's pretty common to hit them in week 3-4. For short term stays like yours, you just kind of wait it out, but for long term stays (living somewhere else) that's when it's really important to become immersed and embrace your new culture. Those who run from it miss out on a lot and don't fare very well. Even though you're only there a bit longer, try to really dig in. You're that way by nature or at least you seem to be, and your instincts are good. Enjoy your Camino and soak up and embrace as much culture as you can while you are there. It will brighten your spirits and enhance your experience.

Lovin’ it! Did want to mention every time I see Montana actually using her poles, seems like they’re way too short.

Too short. Plus she was walking downhil, so they need to alot longer, to take pressure of her knees.
