Episode 4: The Hidden Looper in the Prophet Rev2

Very fun and inspiring trick I stumbled across to achieve a Looper like effect on the DSI Rev2. I wanted to keep the sound design as simple as possible and focus on the underlying concepts of this trick here so I used the simplest possible sound, a Sine Wave :D
Here is a jam I made using the looping LFO on cutoff instead of volume. • Spacey, Chilled Out DS...
You can definitely expand on this idea! I'm going to start a new thing in the description of these videos with some rough ideas for going further with the concepts!
Going Further:
- Instead of the Loop LFO on our Amp Amount you can set it to the Filter Cutoff of an Init Patch for a more filter sweep type sound!
- Square LFO on the Loop LFO's rate would jump between two different loop speeds.
-A slow triangle LFO could slowly alter the loop speed. You could also use that same Tri LFO on pitch.
-This is all possible because a Reverse Saw sounds like a decaying notes. Give a regular Sawtooth LFO a shot instead!
-You can use this like an onboard delay on the p08! If you have a Rev2, that means you could have two delays. Both Beat synced if you want.

Thank you for this tip - I've just spent a good half hour twiddling around. This is so convincing in setting up drone / ambient textures that just go on and on and on. Anyone who's experimentin' should also try different wave shapes, using the same routing. Normal sawtooth wave gives a 'reversed' audio sound. Increasing filter resonance until it self-oscillates results in creepy, growly, haunting sounds with low cutoff. Imitates a whole setup, just using one synth.

Right on dude. If only we could modulate the LFO type in real time :O I suppose you could rig something similar up with the 3rd envelope, looping. Then further modulate the stages ;D
@iv0luti0n
@iv0luti0n 3 года назад
@@philmakesnoise Here's a grand idea. You have multiple LFOs, each with a unique waveshape, that all modulate the VCA. The base amount is set to 0. Then you use the gated sequencer to trigger the LFO amount, but only for one LFO at a time. So in this way, you can 'modulate' between different wave shapes in real time. This would still be triggered by key presses but hey, at least you don't have to manually switch the LFO waveshapes. It's probably not going to be that smooth between transitions either but it could work. I'm going to try it over the next couple of days!

Great stuff! As the LFOs are syncable, this trick also works in the context of live jamming with other gear, like synths, external sequencers and DAWs, when synced to the same MIDI clock (except modulating the LFO rates, in this case).

Thanks man! Working on getting my Rev2 back actually. Ended up with a Prophet 6 for a while and yeah, it was great but the Rev2 was my first synth. It just feels so natural to me. Had to sell the P6 when I lost my day job due to covid but when it comes time to replace it, I'll be going back to Rev2. I'll definitely post some more videos!

You can also play around with pan spread by setting another triangle LFO in the mod matrix (LFO 2 :: Pan Spread :: ~20) to get a sound that bounces back and forth in the stereo field. I like to vary this amount in envelope 3 so I get a sound that dynamically moves into wider stereo field over time by setting a delay, attack, decay on it. I really like making the "loops" start at different points using the note number to alter the LFO rate. There are so many ways to have fun with this Prophet!

Thanks for your Episode! I'm enjoying a lot to imitating your work! But for this one, I've been trying to generate the sine wave on my prophet rev2. But every time I press a key, the pitch is slightly different. So if I play a scale, sounds like microtonal scale. Do you know how to solve this problem?
@philmakesnoise
@philmakesnoise Год назад
Since we are playing the filter, it's not as stable as an oscillator. You might try lowering the resonance a touch less than full. And you might also try going into the synth setting and doing a calibration.
@youngwoolee8380

@@philmakesnoise Yeah, I can't help but lust over actual Prophets, be they 5, 6 or Rev2's, but the DM12 is an amazing machine, especially for the price, and I get too easily down about it (mind you, that's just how life seems to be right now with this pandemic), watching vids like this really reignites the flame!
@philmakesnoise
@philmakesnoise 3 года назад
@@squareeyedgit yeah man, the best synth (or any instrument) is the one in front of you. Even aside from that, the the dm has a really cool sound. I love analogaudio1s patches. The pandemic has definitely sucked. I sold most of my gear very early on and only just now started getting a few things back. And the fact that I've been comfortable enough to have my tempoary loss of gear to point to as a negative means I'm still riding this out better a whole lot of folks. Point is, I'm hella grateful for the health of me and my family and grateful for the few bleep bloop boxes I have to help pass the time. Enjoy that dm to the fullest 🙂 E: oh and I have owned a Rev2, pro 3, pro 2, and now a P6. All seperately though but still. Even now that I have my dream synth, I'm still lusting for a Poly Brute and a Hydra Synth. The allure of the new and shiny will always be there ;)

It’s a great synth - I have a lot of great ones and I can’t sell my Rev2 no matter what. It does so much and anyone who says “Curtis filter” in a bad way is just wrong. No it’s not a Moog Ladder Filter- if you need that buy a Moog too. Each synth has its own character. Good luck!
