Dad has always said that the Mesa .50 Cal+ was “a poor man’s dumble” and I believe he is right. He always used a head, but when I saw this combo for sale 12-13 years ago for $500 I couldn’t pass it up. I kept it at home and he used it sometimes, but recently I was able to bring it back to Nashville (my holiday flights were cancelled, so I rented a car LOL).

I"m just going to throw this out there but I have a friend who said he use to work at Madison Square Garden in NYC and he told me many many bands would have these huge displays on stage all Marshalls walls of Marshalls but he claims what they were actually playing thru hidden somewhere at the back end of the stage were Mesa Boogie Studio 22's lol I"m not kidding and this friend has no reason to lie about something like this. So there you go and this was of course back in the day when the Studio 22's were first produce by Mesa Boogie. Peace !

I saw this first hand with one band with a mascot named Went to the Worcester Centrum with a couple guys from college. One buddy's dad was friends with the sound company and we were able to see the crew setting up before soundcheck. Surprisingly, there was a few Mesa Boogie combos mic'd up near the tech area. Didn't get to meet IM but seeing them perform was pretty awesome!

It was a very common tactic and still can be. My favorite example of that is probably Rich Robinson’s early years in The Black Crowes

I played a 50 Cal Plus Combo for almost a decade in L.A., through the metal scene and after. Best amp I ever owned.

@@austinskinner BTW I played through a Dumble Overdrive Special in '87. Great amp but the Boogie was a better value. It was $100,000 less.

New sub here man, got to play a modded 50 cal plus head back in the late 80’s and it was like a Soldano and a IIC++ had a baby on steroids! One of top 5 best sounding amps I’ve ever heard. 🤘🤘🤘

Bought my 50+ head new in 89, I run it into a 87 Peavey MS412 with G12k85 Celestions (still my favorite rock/blues speaker). Rock and Roll Machine!!!

I've got a 50 Cal + head that got all new tubes and caps and I think it sounds just great. I use it with pedals but it is fun to crank that gain and get that old Boogie sound going. Thanks for showing that combo.They are beasts. It's a lot of amp for the dough for sure.

Great amp i have 2 For live nothing sounds as good . Youu can use the eq for a lead boost if u get your sound then turn the eq off for the boost and flatten out the eq.. volume is the only issue on a big stage that's why i have two Best amp for sound and reliability i ever owned and some years i did over 150 gigs and had it for 20 yrs . Also tinfoil shield flakes onto board when you slide amp out for repair .i remove this with a drill and wire brush or it will short out but 9 outta 10 amp in my book

You’re not “hearing” the pickups as much as the brass hardware on the guitar, the amp, and the speaker. I’d have to remove the pickguard to remember what they are but I know the neck is an Adder.
