Episode FIVE of this eight episode series compares two 2008 Land Rover LR3 HSE’s, one with the stock air suspension against an aftermarket coil conversion.
In this episode we hit the scenic highways of Moab with both LR3's to test their performance at speed, braking, cornering, steering, and more. Join Military Mobility founder, Brian Ribera (former Navy SEAL and Master Training Specialist that has conducted mobility operations in over 40 countries) and our lead instructor Webb (Camel Trophy participant, Land Rover driving instructor, and current military Special Forces trainer) as they drive both vehicles on Moab's beautiful highways!

The advantage of air off-road is that you can raise it when you need it. It is also an integral part of Terrain Response. On the road, above a certain speed, the air suspension lowers, improving handling. Taking air tech out is like turning the clock back 20 years. Most modern 4x4 have air and Terrain Response for a reason - it works. Brill vid, though. You guys are heroes.

Excellent video as I'm looking to change my air to coil sprung. I do very little off-road so I would say, coil sprung is a good option

Outstanding video and series! I have the exact same coil set, your testing. I'm stunned the coils tied the air. IMO the handling became more crisp with the coils. Thank you for making this test!

I LOVE my LR3. It outperforms my previous Jeep and F150. No comparison. It's a beast on the trails, but with my 3inch johnson rod lift you have to go pretty slow on turns which is a bummer as the traction control kicks in and auto brakes. The air suspension was a bit nauseating at first but now I LOVE it on the trails and is great on the straight stretches. Be prepared for electrical malfunctions in the bush and have your own self booster and spare battery. Seems that cold weather -10 makes the electrical act up... It's a stellar off roader for the price. Through on some good all terrains, so the johnson rod 3inch lift and find yourself a good mechanic because you're going to end up putting some cash into this so you don't get stuck in the bush.

Get in the habit of pressing the DSC button when you start up the vehicle to turn that feature off and you won’t have the annoying auto-braking around turns. We adjusted our height calibration with the GAP tool and don’t have that problem anymore. We even had that problem with the coil conversion so it’s not the Johnson Rods causing it.

What part of Jersey you from.....Essex county here. Also can you go into more depth about your "independent air suspension kit"? I have a Touareg and would like to do something similar to avoid be stranded..Thx

Great video series and comparison for the LR3 coil vs air, like it a lot. Well done guys! You just rock. Driving the LR3 or LR4 on the highway is just so boring, but in a good way. It just drives for hours and you just feel good about it. I'm driving a newer LR4 and going out for 2 days across Europe driving 700-800 miles per day is just so relaxing. Not tired at all even after 12 or 14 hours on the road. Hey, what are those 18" steelies you are using on the LR3's?

It means so much to us that you enjoy the series, thank you for reaching out! Agreed, they are great vehicles for road trips, just love the commanding view and interior space. What engine do you have in your LR4? Diesel perhaps? …. Would love one of those!
@Dieter.Reuter
@Dieter.Reuter 2 года назад
@@MilitaryMobility I do have a 2016 LR4 with the Diesel engine (of course), this engine makes so much more sense here in Germany, and the mileage you get out of this heavy car is just excellent. I drive it on average at 23.5mpg (10l/100km) which is extremely efficient for a 2.8ton car. I had used a friends LR3 for some days back in 2012/13 in Nevada and I really loved this car so much, and finally found a great 2016 LR4 almost new one last year. Currently this LR4 is just a luxury last model "LANDMARK", equipped with absolutely everything - and all in stock conditions. But it's missing the rear diff locker. Next week it will be getting 18in rims, 265/65r18 wheels and XLifter. I didn't feel good about installing 32" tires, so decided to go for 31.5", even the spare tire should fit under the car (but almost deflated, but good to go as my daily driver). And honestly we do have to do some minor modifications to fit the larger tires, so not sure how you can use 32" completely unmodified. 😏

@MilitaryMobility 2 года назад
@@Dieter.Reuter Very nice! Score on the Landmark edition and all the mods. We’re able to run the 32” tires by using either the GAP programming tool or the Johnson Rods. The XLifter will do the same and is an awesome product. Best of luck with that rig! 🙌

These are the best series of air vs coil comparison videos of LR3. I own one myself and considering conversion. Which tire size do you use on both vehicles? do you have johnson rods or some other spacers, because tires look larger than standard 255/60/18
@MilitaryMobility
@MilitaryMobility Год назад
Hello and glad you’re enjoying the series. The tires are P rating and equate to a 32” tire. We had the Johnson Rods on the air suspension rig as it’s an easy plug and play solution to allowing for the bigger tires, and I highly recommend them however we have since removed them and set a custom height with the GAP programming tool. No spacers on the coil LR3, just the OME 2” coils.

Really enjoy your videos guys👍🏻 I'm curious about the cross bars on your rigs. Any whistle noise? My LR3 cross bars whistle like crazy, very annoying. I think it's because I don't have the top rubber strip anymore. I take the bars off in the summer and put on my roof rack. As for my coil setup, it's good. I do prefer the air, gotta say!
@MilitaryMobility

Hello Zman and thanks for reaching out! It means so much to us that people like yourself are enjoying the series; that’s what we’re after! 🙌 Yes our bars whistle a bit and on our grey one with the awning you hear the wind a bit more. One trick that helps reduce but not remove wind completely is to move the front crossbar back some, so the air over the windshield doesn’t hit it immediately. Those roof mounted lightbars folks have are loud for this reason. Which coil conversion did you go with? It’s nice for us to be able to have both. I will say our air has been giving is fits lately and I’ve been reliably using the coil until I get time to straighten things out. Something to be said for putting in the key and just driving! …. But the features on the air are so nice… hahaha!!

@@MilitaryMobility I have the Atlantic British 2" HD springs. I would like a bit more lift/stiffness in the rear coils because when I'm loaded it will sometimes rub the tires going over dips on the freeway. Took it to Santa Cruz CA last summer and up through San Francisco then home to Utah on I80. The freeway going through Sacramento to Santa Jose, not good loaded with springs. I'll move the front cross bar back. 👍🏻
