Great videos and historically accurate. These episodes of Mediterranean history are almost forgotten (probably bcause there are no aglosaxon protagonists). You need more views. Good job!

Thanks for watching! A lot of my postgrad research looked at the influence Barbarossa, Dragut, Uluj Ali and others had in 16th century Mediterranean naval military landscape. Crucial figures in Ottoman history to say the very least, make sure to check the other episodes of the Ottoman Titans of the Mediterranean series!

Great video and very interesting series! Seeing the chronological links between episodes are you going to talk about Occhialli?

Next episode will be about Piale Pasha, but thinking of talking about Occhiali (Uluç Alì) as part of the episode, given his role at Lepanto and in the Ottoman navy in that era.

I was born in Bodrum/Turgut Reis. He was born in here. He was born in kara toprak (black land) a village in Bodrum.

If you asked today any Maltese person who was Dragut, they would tell you he died in the Great Siege after a stone hit his head. They wouldn't be able to tell you the names of any of the other Ottoman leaders. That is how much the Maltese hated and feared him, that we still remember how he died!

Sicilians as well and pretty much all coastal Italian towns and villages. Same story with Barbarossa before him. Actually talked about him during the great siege in the Malta miniseries, episode 5.4 think it was. Thank you for watching/listening!

Dear Sir, Thank you for this podcast episode (6.3). I am researching Turgut Reis and am grateful for your expertise. A) The Further Reading you mentioned by Ali Riza Seyfi, is there an English translation? B) I’ve read elsewhere that Dragut evaded Doria at Djerba (circa 1550) by portaging his boats over the lagoon. Do you have any information about this incident? Seems exaggerated. My [armchair/amateur] research hasn't produced good sources. What is your opinion on the incident? C) Please recommend other (English) sources/histories regarding Dragut. Thank you.

Hello, thanks for listening! First of all I was fortunate to find some notes in Romanian translated by Orientalists in their work/research done on the history of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century(mainly Aurel Decei and Iorga but also Dimitrie Cantemir). As far as I'm aware Seyfi's books on both Dragut and Barbarossa are not translated in English. B) I've looked in Braudel's book (Mediterranean in the Age of Philip II, vol 2 (1995), pp.908-910. Dragut causes some turbulences mainly in Sicily, 7th may 1550 Doria arrives in Naples (report on 29th said Dragut's fleet was near Messina, waiting to ambush grain ships leaving the harbour. Doria's fleet is lacking manpower (~ 1000 oarsmen short). Leaves Naples on the 11th of May. (Beforehand Dragut had taken over the small town of Africa, which Doria actually manages to win in a small victory). Braudel writes that Dragut retreats and there is the Battle of Ponza where he gathers his forces and supplies to confront Doria's fleet and defeat him. C) Once again I would reference Braudel's work and to have a look at the index for Dragut. Lords of the Sea: A History of the Barbary Corsairs by Alan G. Jamieson is decent Book written by Paul Coles in 1968 - The Ottoman Impact on Europe has a few mentioning of Dragut Calendar of State Papers Relating To English Affairs in the Archives of Venice, Volume 5, 1534-1554 (and vol 6) contain numerous references to both Barbarossa and Dragut Reis. Hopefully there will be more books written on the history of Dragut Reis, he was definitely fascinating historical figure. Hope this helps and thanks again for listening!

Not even close. Turgut is a name of Mongolian origin and It was one of the names commonly used among Anatolian Turks. Dragut just corrupted version of Turgut in latin sources.
