After the attacks on Lake Horowhenua and Paekakariki, Te Rauparaha encounters some push back from the local Iwi resulting in losses. This covers a number of those events which convinces Te Rauparaha that the only safe place for him and his people is on Kapiti

Another great episode. Shame you can’t venture South for the waipounamu portion of history. I noticed on the map showing the waikanae pa site being to the north and inland of the river mouth. The waikanae pa was in fact located to the south of where the river mouth now is in what is Kena kena park. Interesting site described in various books and the site of the first church built on the kapiti coast..

The cost of living is taking its toll... Re Waikanae Pa, you are probably right re Kenakena. In all of the accounts Te Rauparaha's Pa there is referred to as Waikanae Pa. There were a number around Waikanae, but Kenakena is closest to the river, which is probably why it is the most likely.
