This is the best explanation of scene structure I've come across. Your whole series is dense with information. I'll probably need to rewatch a few times to really absorb it all. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this.

Once again- THANK YOU! Always sad when each of these ends because I learn so much. I’m currently reading as much material as I can on the subject, along with watching videos here from a variety of sources, and I find your method exceeds at getting all these ideas to really stick in my noggin. Splicing in clips as examples is so helpful for visual learners like me. I’ll ride your train of screenwriting expertise until it runs off the rails!

I think I went too far, as I found six. Rookie mistake. I paused your video and did the excersice. You are right. I mean, I just broke it down into verbs. Sorry my misspelling. 1. Sees the life and glamour of a pilot. 2. Frank pretends to be a student. 3. Gets information from Mr. Morgan. 4. Calls for a uniform. 5. Pick up the uniform. 6. Transforms into a pilot/sets his father´s values (exposition?)/ transform them into a lie. But, after, watching the rest of your video, I realized now that 2/3/4/5 are part of the same unit of information (becoming a pilot). Thank you so much, I am learning a lot.

Yes, it is, and we often must deliver more than one piece of information per scene -- but the audience will usually only absorb one primary emotional unit at a time. @@oraclemedia9266

I work almost 70 hours a week and when I get home, I can't even leave my eyes open to write a script I'm so tired. I've written several scripts but only two placed in contests which got me nowhere. I want to be thankful for what I have but it's so hard when you have nothing. I'm tired. I'm just tired. I just wanna give up and die sometimes but then I know I would be leaving so many who love me... I just for once want to be happy at what I do for a living. Is that so much to ask... I'll start watching you're channel and maybe I can get the help I need to push my writing forward.

The feelings you're describing are common, and always have been, to most people trying to build a career in the arts. I can't advise you on life, but I can tell you that making a living in the arts will not have the magical effect of making your life wonderful. We all have to find joy in the act of making something we're proud of and that other people enjoy (that's one reason I'm doing these videos!), even if it's just a few people. Making money and/or receiving accolades can't be our primary reason. Good luck in your work and in your life.

Thanks for the video Andy! This is a really useful way of thinking about scenes. I've always thought of scenes as discrete sections of narrative which have a particular purpose in advancing the story. It's important to highlight that a scene isn't limited to a particular time or location. For example, montages are made up of clips from multiple times and locations, but together they form one scene, e.i. the 'montage scene', which is cut together to communicate a particular point.

Always excited to see that you have a new video up. You said you wrote for archie bunker. It reminds me of one of those funny lines you hear in a TV show when youre a kid and you never forget it. I was watching the show with my mom. I dont remember the story line anymore, but archie was talking about edith having to go to see a doctor. Archie said something like, "edith has to go see a groinecologist." My mom laughed pretty hard. I have used that word as a joke where ever i get the chance. Of course people either laugh or look at me strangely.

Catch me if you can holds a special place in my heart. I had to write some sort of essay when it came out, when I was studying Audio and Visual Design here in Buenos Aires. For some reason, I googled Frank Abagnale and found his email address. I wrote to him, and soon after he replied asking what my personal address was. Couple of weeks later, I received his biography book (the one the movie is based on), translated to spanish, and signed by him, dedicated to me. I have it right here still.
@TheGoDraft
@TheGoDraft 2 месяца назад
That's cool. Ironically, some people suspect that Abagnale (a veteran con man) was conning the publisher as well as Spielberg with an "autobiography" which wasn't entirely true. But I prefer to assume it was mostly accurate. In any case, it's a great film.

For the scenes that contain a continuous flow, you categorize as two separate scenes because they give two diff units of information, but wouldn’t that just be considered multiple beats in the one scene because the information is coupled in that one moment? And if not, would that continuous flow be considered a sequence? Sorry, I’m trying to unlearn some things I’ve picked up from elsewhere but that’s how I always looked at it. Love the series!
@TheGoDraft
@TheGoDraft Месяц назад
To a writer who's approaching the daunting task of dramatizing a story from scratch, a unit of information that advances the story is a scene. Doesn't matter whether they're contained in one continuous flow of action or 12 separate ones. But honestly, the nomenclature is not of paramount importance here. This is my way of doing things. If it helps you, then that's great -- but other writers can and do approach things differently. The main thing is not to get hung up on the terminology used by so my screenwriting books and programs created by people who don't write for a living but rather get money out of struggling beginners for a living.

Loving this masterclass! Much appreciated. Based on my own understanding, I'm a little confused about the differentiation of a traditional story beat within this explanation of what is a scene. Are they the same thing?
@TheGoDraft
@TheGoDraft Месяц назад
Not necessarily. For example a story beat might be: they fall in love. But that might take you 3, 4, 5 or more scene to accomplish. A beat is something major that happens which advances your story. Of course, if you outline in great detail, it may wind up that your beats are the same pretty much as your scenes. But it doesn't have to be.

Speilberg said he watches The Searchers before he goes to make a movie. He did make a historical mistake on the beach though. The boat obstacle pole ramps are pointing the wrong way. Kind of crazy that something like that would be gotten wrong with him and so many others preparing the set.
@TheGoDraft
@TheGoDraft 4 месяца назад
You may be right, and yes there are a lot of eyeballs that should catch mistakes - but making a movie is such a titanic endeavor, it's a miracle most movies aren't filled with more mistakes.

Besides the depressing long shot feeling that goes with a script ever being turned into a movie, i also feel torn when i hear people on film courage talk about how a script had better grab them in the first two pages or i am throwing it in the trash can because my time cannot be wasted. I get the sense that these days we had better trot out the glow in the dark space monkeys shooting lasers from their bum in the first few pages or else the reader will become bored and toss it aside like an empty clam shell. We cannot have the characters say too much and we cannot have them ever be silent and every page and scene needs to have someone driving a flaming car out of a 14 story building or else. I guess my question is, would anyone in hollywood these days put up $10 million dollars to make a movie like tender mercies?
@TheGoDraft
@TheGoDraft 4 месяца назад
No, they wouldn't ake Tender Mercies for 10 million, but someone could get it made for 2-3 million. As for grabbing people in the first 2 pages, what they really mean is not space monkeys but a sense of competence and immediate emotional engagement. And that's true: a good writer couldn't write 2 boring pages, much less do it on the first 2 pages. So if the first 2-5 pages don't engage me, there's almost no chance the rest of the script will.

What is the difference between a scene and a sequence?
@TheGoDraft
@TheGoDraft 3 месяца назад
Great question, for which there is no easy answer, since there is no official standard for screenwriting terminology. Personally, I always think in terms of scenes being the building blocks of a story. Sequences (to me) are a series of scenes that move the story in a s]certain direction. Think of them as a wall that the scenes build, all of which are serving the larger story (or building to continue the metaphor). But other screenwriters might well disagree with my defininitons.
@pfhastie
@pfhastie 3 месяца назад
@@TheGoDraft That's how I look at it. Perhaps it's better to look at each informational block as simply a unit, which could either be a scene or a sequence or even a montage. Anyway, you're quite right, it's not an exact science, which is a good thing.
