episode 78 - changeling: the lost discussion

Don't worry, we're not totally casting off our roots quite yet. While Changeling: the Dreaming was in deep freeze, the mantle of "modern personal horror fae game" was taken up by Changeling: the Lost, a rather different entry in the (new) World/Chronicles of Darkness. At a glance, Lost shares a lot of terms and concepts with Dreaming, but digging into it, the game diverges significantly from its predecessor. This doesn't mean it's a bad game! We're giving it a fair shake this week and talking generally about some of its setting, the unique position it carves out among the lines, and how we feel it relates to Dreaming-especially since this was maybe the primary replacement we had to work with until C20.

As a Lost player dipping my toes into the world of Dreaming I really appreciated you guys breaking down your likes and dislikes of Lost. It's been really interesting. The only thing I want to push back a bit on is the reason the Lost come together, which is more closely explored in Lords of Summer in 1E. The Lost do gather because of Trauma bonds being formed but they stay together because each of the Courts gives something different and requires something different. Spring gives a place to be hedonistic and cut loose in chasing your desires, but obliges each person to take responsibility for their actions. Summer gives a brotherhood of like-minded and directed warriors, but it requires training, sacrifice and keeping others in mind. Autumn gives people protection, food, magic, and a place to work through fear, but requires reciprocation of what they've invested for the future of their courts. Winter gives a place to hide, to disappear from all the things chasing you, but requires information, collaboration, and self-sufficiency. So a Lost Freehold, even if it's functioning poorly has those elements and developments which is why Changelings gather, initially it's for protection but it morphs into having purpose.
