What a way to feck up your drill chuck That "sandpaper" should be wet and dry paper. Use it wet with dish soap and it won't clog up.

Awesome results! Seems like a very cool technique for those high-quality macro shots, even if it's not something I'd do everyday. Sometime I will have to try it and do a side-by-side performance comparison just for my own curiosity! (Now, you'll have to try taking it all the way up to a felt wheel with some jeweler's rouge!!! Hahaha!)

with a little finesse pliers can be use to flatten the end of the wire rather than using a hammer. wet sanding is a method to keep things a tad bit cleaner, but for most users i would not suggest it if they are using a corded drill.

Seems counter productive, wouldn't you want a rougher surface to the coil to provide nooks and crannies for the juice to sit in. Seems to me a mirror finish would make a slick surface for the juice to just slip off.
@ruspj
@ruspj 8 лет назад
worth polishing your wire with some swivels before you wrap the coils ? guessing any effect on the flavour would be much better if the whole wire is polished including the inside where it contacts the wick
@TheArtofVaping
@TheArtofVaping 8 лет назад
+ruspj Absolutely! If you are just doing this technique on a single piece of round wire then you could absolutely do that and quite honestly have a better end result. However, it would be difficult to really do that with say a piece of framed staple. I'm sure you could to a certain level but would have to be careful not to mess anything up or get uneven sanding.
@chezbalz8469
@chezbalz8469 8 лет назад
To save time with just basic round coils. What you can do is just polish it before wrapping It. And it will be easier to clean and it will have a polished surface inside too. So that way the whole coil is less likely to gunk up

The ebay shop linked for sandpaper is great, and you get a whole lot of sandpaper. But if you're looking to experiment, Hobby Lobby and I'm sure other modeling/rc shops will have it - the pack I picked up is an "Ultra Fine Waterproof Finishing Kit" 8 Pack of 3.5" x 8" sheets of 320, 400, 600, 1000, 2000, 4000, 6000, and 12,000 grit papers. Picked up a pack for $9 locally. Thought I'd mention it if you're looking to experiment or try this out and dont need the super large packs that are linked.

+The Art of Vaping I don't make these kind of coils, BUT.... watching, was just curious why doing all those 'cleaning' steps, but only at the end... wouldn't be enough? Seemed kind of like a waste of time to do them in between, when you're just gonna go sand them again. As I said, don't make these kind of coils, so idk... maybe it's a "duhhh" to me kinda thing, but even as a long time vaper, was my first thought watching. Pretty labor intensive, tho quite sure it's WELL worth it (well, of course it must be, otherwise ya wouldn't have even bothered. lol) ;) Live long(ER) & vape on! #ABillionLives

The most important thing I took from this video is a new way to wrap my framed staple coils because its always a bitch too wrap with that ribbon wire inside, so now I cant use this tech everytime just to wrap even if iam not going to sand on some builds.... Thanks squid00de
@TheArtofVaping
@TheArtofVaping 8 лет назад
+James Alipo This is a great way to wrap the most stubborn of coils. It works especially well for very stiff wire like 18, 20 and 22ga
@HeadShotKilla10
@HeadShotKilla10 8 лет назад
yeah like framed staples or regular staples are a bitch, they always wanna twist and turn and that will ruin the whole coil..... so this tech has worked awesome for me
@wonderdude32
@wonderdude32 8 лет назад
Instead of polishing the wire, why not rough them to create more surface area? This is something I've been thinking about for a long time and would like to hear your thoughts. Great video.
@Masononi
@Masononi 8 лет назад
+wonderdude32 It just creates excessive gunking. All those little grooves from the rough sanding get filled with gunk pretty fast and it doesn't really produce any noticeable difference anyway.
@alfonsedente9679
@alfonsedente9679 8 лет назад
i agree... whoever thinks this polishing improves wicking is wasting thier time and knows nothing about physics. imagine splashing water on a sheet of glass, and a sheet of frosted glass. obviously the course imperfections of the frosted glass will cause more water to stick than the plain glass.
@TheCoolStuffHD
@TheCoolStuffHD 8 лет назад
+wonderdude32 Poishsing it only makes for better pictures to post on instagram. But performance wise, you'd think polishing the INSIDE would have an effect of the way it wicks, since the wick and juice don't really contact the outside unless you drip right on it.
@MrLucamazzanti
@MrLucamazzanti 6 лет назад
Fully agree. By polishing it you're actually getting rid of microscopic imperfections that helped aid in overall surface area. I think this is more a hobbyist approach than a scientific one though, so I still think it's cool.

Polishing the outer surface of the coil does not give anything but hilarious appearance , but if the inner coil surface polished ,then the coil will last longer because less will be burnt to its surface.

@MrJmak642
@MrJmak642 8 лет назад
Why wouldn't you just polish 20 22 or 24 gauge before you wrap the coil? Does the wrapping do something to mess up the finish? I can see this being nearly impossible with smaller wire. Just anchor the free end of the wire on a swivel and polish it up before you wrap it. Seems like it would work, no?
@ForkMyDongle
@ForkMyDongle 8 лет назад
+MrJmak642 I was thinking the same thing. Not the swivel part but now that you mention it it would be easier. Only thing would be getting finger prints on the finish when you wrap it.
@TheArtofVaping
@TheArtofVaping 8 лет назад
+MrJmak642 So this process removes a lot of material so starting with 20ga or 22ga gives you more material to work with. I just used 20ga as an example. If you check out builders like @addictedtobuilding and others who "specialize" in this technique you will see you can really apply this to any type of wire just have to be using the appropriate sandpaper so it isn't too abrasive. As for using a swivel and polishing the wire up before hand, of course you can do that if you're working on a single piece of wire but with something like a fused clapton or more advance wires which are more flat in shape you won't get the consistency that this way provides. However, this is in no means the said way or law on how to do it, this video is only intended to get the information out there. Where you take it from here is up to you!

To significantly reduce the dust from sanding simply wet the sand paper. You can also rinse it in between which removes a lot of the dust. It's called wet sanding.
@TheCoolStuffHD
@TheCoolStuffHD 8 лет назад
Awesome tutorial. To avoid less damage or risk of damage, I'd imagine that some nylon pliers and a small nylon jewelers mallet would come in handy. Question: Would you be able to just sand down the wire before wrapping it?? Maybe stick it in the drill and have the wire on a swivel like you would do a clapton, and just run the sandpaper on the wire??
@TheArtofVaping
@TheArtofVaping 8 лет назад
+TheCoolStuffHD yeah I completely agree, I was getting a little aggressive with the hammer. As for your question, that method would work perfectly fine for single wires that are round. When you start doing this technique with more intricate wires that tend to be more square or rectangular shaped it may be difficult to get a consistent finish.

You can use the back side of that sandpaper to clean the coil between grits so you wouldn't have to soak it every time and clean it once really well at the end. Might save you some time. Also don't really need to start with such a heavy grit because the finish on the wire is already very good. I would also use a pair of pliers to tuck the end of the wire when it's on the bit, your drill will thank you later.
@bahnjee
@bahnjee 6 лет назад
I was thinking the same thing...grip that sumbeech in the toothless pliers and give a few revolutions. Also would like to add that many small taps of a hammer would be better than a few violent whacks.
@andyflagg
@andyflagg 8 лет назад
squidoode would it make it wick better if you used fishing swivels and polished all sides of the wire before you built the coils? it just seems like it would make the wicking and flavor better by removing all the contamination from the wire before even coiling it.
@TheArtofVaping
@TheArtofVaping 8 лет назад
+andyflagg You could absolutely do this however with more elaborate wires (which tend to be more rectangular in shape) are hard to get an even sanding and you always run the risk of messing the wire up while doing that. However, for your basic single pieces of round wire, I don't see why you couldn't do it the way you described!
@Spushed
@Spushed 7 лет назад
I believe after you straighten the wire, leave it in the drill and then sand the WHOLE wire vice just the outside so it's more effective. Hell you can do that to 34ga and lower THEN build the coil completely for a more effective outcome. Might be a bit difficult with 36ga though.

Perhaps using the sandpaper with water might help with dust. Plus you can get a much smoother finish without taking the sanding up to such a high grit.
@elementnature
@elementnature 6 лет назад
I hear it matters if you use wet vs dry sandpaper grits? I heard it only works with wet grit? I don't know the difference, I'm new to all of this and I bought a pack of sand paper with all different grits, but I think it's just dry but I can't tell. I don't even know what wet vs. dry is truly. Any help majorly appreciated. I'm back to this video for the 3rd time now with all the right gear finally! SO please help if you are able! Awesome video thanks for the tutorials Squidoode, keep it up I wouldn't be where I am without these.
@TheArtofVaping
@TheArtofVaping 6 лет назад
Hey Alex, wet sanding vs. dry sanding could be debated from both ends. My opinion, in my experience doing high polishes on headlights, firearms, coils, etc you just about name it... wet sanding is always going to be the better option as the water acts as a "coolant" and allows for a smoother more even finish. Now this is when you start getting in the 2000 grit + range. Wet sanding with 80 grit, makes no sense you see... Hopefully that makes a little sense. Now they do sell specifically wet and dry sandpaper, but I have found it doesn't really matter as long as you have the grit you're looking for. I would simply make a water soap mixture in a piece of tupperware or something you don't mind getting a little dirty and dunking your piece of sandpaper in that water/soap mixture periodically while sanding no matter what the polish project is or skip the hassle and just dry sand it. When you dry sand with those higher grits you'll still have very very fine scratches in the wire which would only be seen through an up close macro type photo.
@elementnature
@elementnature 6 лет назад
The Art of Vaping wow thanks so much that was the answer I needed and more. So so grateful for your help. Thanks again!! (Btw I don't mind doing the soap/water dipping, if it produces a better cleaner finish)

@TheArtofVaping
@TheArtofVaping 8 лет назад
+Van VanM Absolutely. This however will only work well with single pieces of wire. On the more elaborate wires, they tend to be more square or rectangular in shape which makes it a little more difficult to sand. Not saying it can't be done. Once you hit 1,000 grit, use drops of water in the paper. Eliminates dust, eases sanding and does a better job. Also don't ribbon around the coil, use your finger for pressure. Anything passed 5,000 grit is a waste. Super cut polishing compound takes down to 2,500 sand scratches out. You're welcome.

Here in the Land Down Under, the fine grit paper is usually both black and can be used wet. (Emery paper or glass paper). I use this as well as polishing paste designed for metal polishing and finishing work and ise fine stones to work it in (Japanese technique) when I am finishing any of the medieval swords I make. I also make use of both dust extraction systems I built and a good respirator.

Dude I can't thank you enough for the inspiration. I have learned so much from your videos this one included.... but. For the love of god don't hammer on a drill chuck... From what i've seen (on your videos) the less wobble on the drill the better and those chucks (especially the cheaper variety) are not made to be hit... Maybe pull it out of the chuck and hammer it on a vise? I dunno... Its just the first thing i've seen in any of your videos that I thought I could help you out on for a change haha. Please keep making these videos!

HAHA yeah no doubt! To be honest with you, I have several drills and for the sake of time and this video I donated one! But you are absolutely correct, appreciate the call out!

I know, it's the dialect around the Southwest region of Ohio. Everyone says it that way (around here) and sometimes it slips my mind…

Can you please make a tsuka coil tutorial?
@bjarmib
@bjarmib 8 лет назад
Hi i have one question about have you taken older coils you had maybe for some time maybe dirty black and put them in the ultrasonic cleaner and see the result how it comes out.....just wondering if they would almost be looking like brand new :) ? because I have seen a lot videos of people just cleaning their atomizers or tanks with it but not seen really a used gunky coil that has been cleaned by it :)

Great vid and great info. I do have one question though. Why don't you use the pliers to get the end of the wire flush on the drill bit instead of hitting it with a hammer and possibly doing internal damage to the drill?
@TheArtofVaping
@TheArtofVaping 8 лет назад
+Frank Aanenson Pliers will more than likely damage the coil, more specifically if the wire is say a clapton. Toothless pliers to that type of wire will easily remove the clapton. I'm using light pressure when using the hammer and it's about an 8 ounce hammer so I'm not too concerned with damaging the drill but good point!

Thank you for taking the time to respond. It was just a thought and concern. That was the first vid of yours that I had watched. Keep up the good work and sharing the knowledge.

how does the polished side affect the taste? I could understand the inside of the Coil causing a change in taste. Think this is just for looks. Great video tho.
@johnavi
@johnavi 8 лет назад
Jake Vang so it's only beneficial if you drip directly on top of the coil? I think the inside of a coil should be polished. I could understand that.
@jacobvang
@jacobvang 8 лет назад
+John Avi yea basically. I been thinking if youre gonna benefit from a mirrored coil, might as well straighten the whole wire then sand it while it's straight so that the whole thing is clean, therefore the inside will be mirror finished while your wrap it

Hello Squidoode, interested in what you vape, earlier in the video you mention you go back to a specific juice, what juice is that? Love your vids, I hope I get a 1/4 as good as you at building coils, that would be enough 😎

I've been vaping for 3months and it's more than obvious that a spaced coil works better than a tight coil. Polish your coil all you want lol 😂

I believe that statement is true but in certain cases for sure, not across the board though

What precision screwdriver set do you use? Seems really handy for centering with the small lip that they have.

you need to get a drill with a brushed motor. lots of low end torque

OK I've done a lot of construction work and its really if you are going to be sanding and big ole piece of work like a plank of wood or any grinding on a piece of metal. ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT QUESTION CLEAN THE HELL OUT OF THE COIL BEFORE VAPING OR FIRING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But for wearing a mask while sanding the coils not really necessary just don't have it near your face, hold it at like arms length and below your face and you will be fine.

Or to clean it spin the coil in the chuck and take a tooth brush with your cleaning solution
