One duo I wish would have been mentioned was Grace and Mamrie. As a duo who was a duo even before starting to upload content on YT they've kept with it for over 10+ years now. The biggest thing I think they've done is creating an atmosphere with their friendship, vulnerability and general silliness that has always felt it was made to include their audience throughout the years. Not to mention that it is a duo of funny, talented women that have made it through the test of time, where as a lot of duos fall off, or only one keeps going like they mentioned.

Dan and Phil recently came out as gay, but the relationship between them is still left in the dark. The problem with fans always pushing them to come out for years is that they didn’t want to come out. They weren’t ready and didn’t know if they ever would be ready, so to have all these people being like ‘we know your gay’ was probably really stressful for them. They both released videos about them coming out on their separate channels

Hey, I know the Dan and Phil saga! Here we go: Dan and Phil were just two dudes on the internet around 2005-2009, two emo young adults who had a community of people that was very small at first. They shared stuff on many early social media sites they didn't expect millions of people to see. They were posting content to youtube as a fun side thing, Phil since 2006. This is part of how they met-Dan watched Phil's videos, they became friends, Phil encouraged him to do the same. The unique issue with shipping them, which has only been public since 2019, is that Dan and Phil were both ACTUALLY gay and NOT OUT TO THE INTERNET (that's ~2009-2019 =10 years of being almost outed daily). This caused a few problems: when fans did their crazy shipper digging, they found actual things that were supposed to be private, which only fueled the fire. Additionally, it made the two uncomfortable in a HUGE and unique way compared to straight guys being shipped, because time and time again they were asked in 1000 different ways if they were straight, and either had to dodge the question or lie, which ALSO only fueled the fire. Dan in particular was NOT EVEN OUT TO HIS FAMILY, meaning that every time he had to acknowledge this it was extremely stressful... Imagine, anyone can send clips of what you say publicly DIRECTLY to your family. He's said he was to the point of even keeping this information from close friends, because there was a fear someone would out him without thinking, etcetera. So! fans crossed so many boundaries and were basically shoving shipping content in their faces daily, demanding they acknowledge old posts/content and admit they were BOTH gay AND together. On the other side of this are two very young men who were both not out to the internet and fucking praying that this would not be the main focus of discussions surrounding their content soon. Pretty bad! Additionally, this situation is so much worse than the shipping of any other internet duo because it was a breach of their rights to privacy regarding their sexuality and relationships. In other words, a lot of times when fans ship duos there is an acknowledgement that this is not a conspiracy but a fantasy, and the fans do not know details of their actual lives. For Dan and Phil that line was never drawn. And yes, I was involved in this fandom! There were good times, there were bad times. As an aside, their friendship and the vibe of their duo was SO important to a huge generation of nerdy, depressed, socially awkward, socially rejected people. For me, it showed that even though I felt so alone, they were a lot like me, and they existed had found each other. Therefore it was possible for me to also find people who understood me. Their fandom was proof that those people existed! As a young teen, though I never actively harassed them, it did not immediately occur to me that the posts I was seeing were seriously harmful. Not to mention that famous people had their lives invaded all the time already, so this sort of behavior/information was quite normalized in a lot of ways, and to me these two were the same as regular celebrities.

As someone who lives in Wyoming, it is so SO weird for these celebrities to move here. Like. Kayne moved to a ranch a couple minutes outside of Cody Wy and totally changed the property. Like built on the property and demolished bits of it and put mounds of dirt to block the public from seeing the property (which houses a very pretty lake and historic cabins.) He had all these plans for Cody. Hired people, bought multiple buildings that he was going to turn into factories and businesses. He had an entire housekeeping crew at his ranch and then just... dipped. Sold all of his buildings and property and let go of all the employees. As for Jeffree, he lives in Casper, WY and has his ranch where he raises Yak for meat and hide I believe. Casper is a very industrial town. Like blue collar workers and people just trying to make a living, so when he bought this ranch and started driving his pink sportscars around, it was very... unsettling? Just so out of place and honestly out of touch. Aside from the outrageous outfits and cars, Jeffree fits right in with the rest of the gun toting, ranching, Wyoming communities. I don't keep up with Jeffree, but I've seen him show off his gun collections and such. It's not out of the ordinary for people to have a gun collection or raise cattle to sell here. Ranching is a large part of the economy here, but idk. It feels weird when someone famous moves here and sort of takes over that community with luxury Yaks, lol. It was a really weird time when all of the Wyoming news outlets were focused primarily on Kanye and Jeffree. Just my take on things since it was all the buzz for 2 years.

Oh my god yes PLEASE do an episode about what Connor was talking about with the Snapchat news type shit. I've been ranting for YEARS about how insane it is that it'll show a story about "what women really think during sex" directly next to "I survived a kidnapping" or footage of actual war crimes. It's DESENSITIZING. It's INSANE. And I really feel like it's a topic that's not talked about enough. Doesn't have to just be about Snapchat btw, it can be about like how this constant barrage of information online is driving us crazy and causing real mental health problems, especially for young people. Bo Burnham described it best in Welcome to the Internet: "Here's a tip for straining pasta / Here's a nine-year-old who died"

LOVED this episode (already listened on spotify lmfao) talking about experiences with Dan and Phil- I saw them live on tour back in 2014 and they were getting VERBAL harassment from the audience. I was like 12 at the time and remember thinking even then it was really inappropriate. There was a part where they were doing some cowboy skit and the group of girls behind me were screaming “RIDE PHIL!!!” Like cmon yall

personally as a femme fan of TMG, it’s been literally so refreshing to see Brooke in the mix. i think at first it was bittersweet because she broke that glass ceiling in their studio in that she was the first female host, but to see her really stepping up and owning that role and really “keeping up with the boys” is really empowering to the gals who’ve followed Cody and Noel for so long, and it’s just like, nice to know they’re doing their part to level the playing field and offering opportunities to the people they believe in.

I was very into Dan & Phil for several years when I was younger, a lot of the fandom was really….bad- because they’d like Lego pressure them to come out, not just write weird raunchy fanfic- I was under the impression that they were just like gay friends, because for a while I wasn’t really interacting with other fans, which I thought was cool! But then it like…got weird talking to any other fans when I only ever watched them because they were hilarious and it was comforting to see two guys be friends and NOT be crazy toxic to eachother

hi, i was deep in the dan and phil trenches when this was happening. they were really close to two other British youtubers, kickthepj and crabstickz, and they were really badly impacted by the excessive shipping their fans were putting them through, actually damaging pj and chris' friendship eventually (this was years ago so i might be a bit off forgive me lmao) and i think dan and phil saw that and panicked. dan and phil had a lot more subscribers, and it was absolutely insane the lengths people would go to try and find out if they were actually together, shouting things at them at their stage show, i went to school with a girl who literally turned up at their flat and they moved out of manchester pretty quickly afterwards, it was kind of insane. although, i think dan and phil have such a strong soulmate bond (whether that be romantic or platonic), they managed to get through it, and they have recently built a house together:) but yeah it was insane. i was also deep in the one direction trenches and i think larry might have been worse, it still goes on today, there was literally so much drama surrounding a big fan account becoming an 'anti' (someone that doesn't believe in larry) and the amount of shit that caused, twitter and tiktok were losing their minds... and that was last week. it really did affect their relationship, they went from living together to hardly being seen around each other. larry runs so much deeper than dan and phil i think, and its a lot more damaging because they involve their other relationships. they think louis' child is fake, at one point they thought eleanor (louis' gf) was a twin or a triplet and they all switch shifts to be his beard, commenting on louis' younger sisters live stream (i think she was like preteen at this point) saying that she's lying about louis to the point of it being harassment. its fucking insane that i was completely convinced at one point. and, i think the whole thing with shipping people you stan together, louis and harry for example, it was routed in we didn't want to see them with anyone, no one else was good enough for them, so people just wanted them to be together because they were the only people who were good enough for one another. i think that can be seen pretty clearly with harry dating camille rowe. she was absolutely hounded the whole time she was dating him, i have no idea how she dealt with all the hate, but now a lot of harries love and miss her because they've moved onto olivia wilde to hate. stan culture is fucking crazy. essays over now

I was in with Dan and Phil and it was honestly sad. They stated multiple times the shipping and graphic fanfics made them uncomfortable. No one cared really and continued writing. I believe they did get together but both were struggling with accepting their sexuality which makes the situation worse

As a young adult who was heavily involved in the Dan and Phil fandom around 2017-2020, I have to correct this to say it was mostly girls. Their fanbase was entirely children and a few young adults(college age). The majority of the dirty fanfictions I read when I was an active fan were clearly written by children. The young girls who didn't understand the concept of fetishizing gay men also didn't understand how sex works(especially gay man sex) and it showed. Young people on the internet generally don't have good ideas of what boundaries are and a lot of them were actively being groomed by adults online, further straying them away from an understanding of boundaries. Also, so many of the young girls who wrote those fanfictions are adults now and have taken down their writing and replaced them with apologies to Dan and Phil. For a while a lot of people were justifying it as fiction because Dan and Phil hadn't come out yet, but when they came out as gay, people realized how much these stories and the speculation had a real affect on Dan and Phil's mental health and relationships with their own sexualities.

I was a huge Dan and Phil fan at one point (massive hyperfixation). At the very beginning of my D&P phase, I did ship Phan. Almost every single comment I saw on every single one of their videos was talking about them being a couple. I didn't see anyone even questioning the shipping and so to tween me it seemed harmless and "normal". When I delved deeper into the fandom, I then realised how intense shipping can get. There were children debating "who's the top and who's the bottom?". My friends and I called some of these people out. I'd argue with these people (who were often referred to as "demon phannies"?💀) about how it's fetishisation of gay men and this one tween aged girl, who would post very sexually inappropriate things about D&P, would say that it just flat out wasn't sexual. She literally talked about who topped/who bottomed and what their penis sizes could be, but according to her? Nah that's not sexual.. She knew damn well what top and bottom meant and even if she tried to say it somehow wasn't sexual, in a way it was just rebranded heteronormativity and was spreading bad messages. "That one acts like this so he puts his dick in the other one". Idk bruh. It wasn't just "they're so cute together" it was "let's pick apart every little detail we can spot in their videos, analyse every word they have ever dared to say, dig up their extremely old posts that they don't want shared and use all of it to expose the apparent romantic/sexual relationship they've been hiding" Treating Dan and Phil's personal lives like a treasure hunt. It was some stalker type shit. D&P have acknowledged the existence of phanfic/phanart, making fun of it at times and even making their own phanfics as a joke which are on RU-vid. They seemed to just brush off that sort of thing. What *really* bothered them (Dan specifically was known for being upset by this, there was even a joke in the fandom about how in 2012 he wasnt handling it well) was when people would speculate and dig into their personal lives. In his coming out video he talks about this stage in his life where it really messed with him and it's quite sad. He deserved to have boundaries. He wasn't even out to his family, but the internet felt entitled to his sexuality and relationship (platonic or not) with Phil AKA his soulmate and the person who made him feel safest (he says those things about phil in his coming out video). Dan even confirmed on his own terms that at some point he and Phil were "obviously more than friends", but continues to not disclose what their current relationship is and wants to keep that between them. Watching both of their coming out videos is recommended if you want to know more.

“parasocial” isn’t always a concept that makes sense to me. this could be a consequence of being ND but i just can’t grasp it fully. i _have_ been someone who’s been *obsessed* but i’ve never once been under the impression that i’m personally friends with them? it’s always been an idolization. i never even had like fan pages or knew their addresses or what hospital they were born in, but i have reached the level where i seek out every ounce of content featuring them i can and have to speak about them. i don’t even attempt to reach out to celebrities online outside of an attempt at a witty yet respectful twitter response to a youtuber.

I have been a Dan & Phil fan for so long. I followed Dan back in 2013, & I feel like he plays a big part in a lot of the sarcastic humor I now have. I was never heavily involved with the subset of fans that shipped them, although I definitely thought there was something going on between the two of them. I think in my mind, all I really wanted was for both of them to be happy & not feel afraid to be open with fans. It broke my heart when they stopped posting on their gaming channel & Dan took a break from his own channel, but I was crying tears of excitement when both of them posted their coming out videos. I really miss their joint content and I hope eventually they can get to a place where they feel comfortable posting together again, but I’m not sure that some of the fan base will ever stop their obsession with them being together so it makes it difficult. But overall, I truly believe they were the first internet duo that I loved!

Honestly I feel as though Jenna was one of the only people on the internet during her prime on youtube who was doing youtube that way. She never put ads in her videos, never was sponsored, because she didn’t believe in trying to sell things to her audience who just wanted to enjoy her content. Jenna and Julien have always been extremely vocal on addressing parts of the internet that they find problematic and especially with their podcast (which was incredible btw) Jenna always made sure to state that this was only her opinion and that she will only say something about her community if it was necessary, such as an infringement on someone’s privacy. I miss Jenna so much however I respect so much that she was one of the only youtubers I know who completely and honestly apologized for things she’s done in the past that were not great and said I will remove myself from this platform for it, even tho she’s one of the most honest and incredible people who have been on the platform. Jenna and Julien have always been positive and cared so much about not only their fans but also their platform. I miss her everyday

my half brother and i didnt see each other much, but we bonded the most over all of the smosh videos. the music videos, food battle every year, we'd memorize every video and just act as ian or anthony on road trips. youtube is the greatest memory i have around that time in my childhood, it gave me a connection to my brother. and i really miss that

I think at first we were all weary of julien was bc of how Jenna and max broke up. It was somewhat messy and we all were surprised so when this new man came near Jenna we felt protective. Another weird thing about the internet. We think we know people who’s content we consume almost every day

i was waiting on a dan and phil reference last ep, glad you brought it up here! I was a super fan back in the day, still follow their stuff casually. I was definitely a shipper but for me it never veered off into the perverse or intrusive, it was just a 'aw these two are so cute, definitely together' and I was certainly in one camp or another (for/against shipping) throughout the years. when dan and phil came out as gay recently, it's implied that they are together but not entirely confirmed, and i think even though dan in particular had his own reasons for staying closeted (like even to his own family, not just the internet) I think it's safe to say that the internet hysteria around their interactions had an impact on their openness.

I actually shipped Dan and Phil in 2017-2018, not as intensely as others but I did love the idea of them being together. Looking back on it, it feels so icky that I felt that way as well as others that were in the fandom. I think 2012 was when they spoke out against it majorly, Dan actually spoke about it in his coming out video. It’s crazy and heartbreaking to think how friendships are effected because of fans like that.

Such amazing people. Violating Community Guidelines has like taken its slot as a podcast as something funny, relatable and heart warming for me. I hope that comes as a compliment to you both (and guests!) that your stuff is great!

The Dan and Phil era was crazy especially the fan fiction. It was literally so graphic and weird and millions were up on sites and constantly sent to Dan and Phil. People were also so invasive and found old videos and pictures against the duos wish. They used to go live on YouNow, you guys NEED to do an episode on that, and the comments were just crazy. I feel bad for them because I don’t think that kind of fandom would be tolerated today.

I’ve been a Dan and Phil fan for probably ten years plus, and I have never and probably will never, interact with the fandom at large. In the end, their relationship, platonic or romantic, is THEIRS. And either way, I love their relationship! They really care for each other and they’re good for each other as friends or partners. As long as they’re happy, I’ve never felt the need to push for any information. It’s not my business.

I was in the Dan and Phil fandom so here’s my two cents; Both Dan and Phil have come out as gay after YEARS of constant speculation from fans. I think that now his fans are not teenagers they seem to be a lot more okay with them not explicitly saying the nature of their relationship? They seem really embarrassed about how they acted and they should be ofc. Also I think the kids shipped them and suspected they were dating bc of their chemistry and the fact that they lived together for years and never had (public) partners too - not really because they thought they wanted to be with them theirselves? It was just massive to ship at the time, (like with Zoe and Alfie etc? ) I think teenagers were seeing a real genuine affection and connection between these two outcasts and I think they just really bought and adopted it because they identified SO strongly with them. Like it’s the same as shipping Tv characters bc it’s on screen and you’re a step removed so I think these kids didn’t connect it in their brains that they are whole fully realised humans who they are not entitled to?

About the whole discussion about body types and unclear comments that can be insulting or not, plus people saying things like it feels good to see someone with my body type and all that. Thank you guys for talking about it because it changed my perspective and cleared some things up for me which i had not thought about before. i used to think that intention matters more, but listening to you guys i see how even well- intended comments can be off-putting or even insulting. Also, it is really true that we as the audience feel closer to you guys and often write stuff that needs context and how things like commenting on someone's physical features even if in appreciation can take away from the content that they are trying to make.

Love them so much, on the level that Rhett and Link are for me. Julien steams on Twitch and occasionally posts on his pain youtube, and he is still a joy and breath or fresh air to watch ❤ Also Brittany and Brooke make me so happy, this podcast was awesome

I was in the trenches with Dan and Phil in 2013 when i was like 14 or 15 and at that time I didn’t realize how bad the shipping was. While I did read fanfic and reblog the edits on tumblr I never actually go too into it but now looking back I can’t help but feel a little guilty for perpetuating the already bad situation even though I didn’t really know how bad it was.

Veteran Dan & Phil fan here. It was really bad and toxic at the time. Fans would make shipping videos, could literally search frame by frame for possible “evidence” and the raunchiest fan fictions ever. Dan & Phil went through years of nonstop questioning about their sexualities and their romantic lives. They literally couldn’t go anywhere or do anything without getting pressed even after they begged fans to stop asking or trying to find “evidence” ect. There are things that were uncovered that we don’t talk about but we’re complete shocking invasions of privacy. Eventually it died down but not after years. They have came out and it’s general consensus that they are together but they’re still very private and I don’t blame them at all for that.

Hey guys, cerebral is accualy really shady and kind of scammy. I would recommend looking into them and their allegations.
