Lots of camera-trap-photos are winning competitions. This kind of an approach requires a certain kind of skill etc. But I feel that competitions should have camera-trap-photography as a separate category, and shouldn't be mixed with the conventional photography approach
You got a valid point there. It’s not envy on my part but getting a shot remotely is a totally different style, requiring a different set of knowledge and skill……and good luck of course.
Great shot however it is not the same type of photography as being there personally to take the shot. I feel that the selection of a trail camera shot as the overall winning photograph has ruined the credibility of this competition. Sorry but anyone can set-up a trail camera and wait for months to get a shot.
I agree with other commenters that there should be a separate category for camera trap. And I don't see myself using traps because I love being there, in that moment experiencing it all, there is a technique to what Sergey did, 100%. Knowing how to set up and use the tracking cameras and setting up the camera to remotely trigger and capture is not something everyone can do. It takes knowledge, craft and skill.

Am I the only one that heard Sergey say it took him days to get out to where he needed to set up because he had to cut down trees?! Ethically, I'm not so sure how I feel about that. For me everywhere I venture I firmly believe in leave no trace.
Camera-trap-photography definitely belongs to a different category, in the future, we will have drone photography too. When we see the wildlife in live situations, the emotion, the challenge, the danger, the weather, the wind all these factors take into account and impact on the photographer herself or himself to have that special picture.
