What is the nature and significance of beauty in Islamic theology and intellectual thought? To what extent did theological, philosophical, and mystical ideas inform the production and reception of Islamic material culture? These and other questions will be the focus of the English interview series "Beauty and Islamic Theology", a series that explores the rich and diverse relationships between theology, art, and aesthetics in the Islamic world.
What is ‘Islamic Aesthetics’? And what is particularly ‘Islamic’ about ‘Islamic art?’ These foundational questions form the focus of our second episode of ‘Conversations about Beauty and Islamic Theology’. Dr Mahmoud also talks about where human beings stand in the great hierarchy of creation, and discusses how to bridge the gap between Islamic intellectual thought and art.
Dr Samir Mahmoud is currently Lecturer at the Cambridge Muslim College on the BA in Islamic Studies and the Diploma in Islamic Psychology.
Recently he was Assistant Professor at the Lebanese American University. He has a BA (Hons) in Anthropology & Politics with a focus on multicultural theory and comparative religion, and an MA in Architectural History, Theory & Urban Design with a focus on the traditional townscape from the University of New South Wales, Sydney Australia. He also holds an MPhil in Theology & Religious Studies with a focus on comparative philosophy and aesthetics. He completed a PhD in Islamic Studies from the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Dr. Timothy Winter (Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad).
The interview series concludes the one-year AIWG project workshop "Beauty and Islamic Theology", a joint research program of the Centre for Islamic Theology at the Eberhard-Karls-University Tübingen and the Chair of Islamic Religious Studies at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg.
