Wow! It looks incredible. I love watching Blacktail Studio and agree, Cam makes some beautiful tables. The fractal burning is amazing and I`m glad you didn`t use the all to commonly used blue epoxy. One of a kind creation and I`m looking forward to the next one.

I have a passion for woodworking since my early years. Just getting into epoxy resin techniques recently. I came across this video searching for it and this blew out my mind. Your approach to build this coffee table is totally in an artist level and perfection. Beautifully done!. I would love to learn the wood burning technique. 🔥 Thank you for sharing your knowledge and the passion you put into it.

@@bruceburnswoodshop1620 that's the thing you wouldn't have to put black pigment or anything in the epoxy just mix clear the burn is already black. If you needed darken up some spots small artist brush and touch up the areas that needed to be then just pour a clear epoxy coat over the entire piece. Or use a paint pen instead of tiny brush. I don't know where I found these at but I found some syringe type paint brushes. You fill them up and they have a plunger just like a syringe but instead of just pushing down to release the paint you would twist these to release the paint. And they held the paint well actually. Not having to constantly twist them or anything to keep paint in the brush end. When I go out to the shop either later today or tomorrow I will see if I can find one and send you a picture. Believe it or not it just crossed my mind but I think I found them at either Walmart in the arts and crafts area or at a like dollar general. Family dollar type of store to be honest with you as far fetched as that seems. I do know they weren't expensive they almost look like one of these products you see and you think those would never work and you pick them up and question this $2.00 major purchase the entire rest of your time in the store. Hahahaha should I put these back, keep them ugh you know what I'm saying then you get home and may not even use them and weeks go by and you find them and then you repeat the whole questioning yourself thing again only for you to open them up and use them and they are the best thing since sliced bread lol. Only to return to the store to buy up the $20 dollars worth of quantity the store had only for them to be all gone. Hahahaha story of my life I will try and pm you a picture of one later. Have a great rest to your weekend my friend.

I have been doing HV Pyrography for years. I can not say say strongly enough to stop using a microwave transformer! ONLY ONE MISTAKE and you are dead, PERIOD! There is a second reason why you should change your power source. It called control. For artistic sake the use of a neon transformer will give you MUCH more control over the burn and even the pattern. If you should make a mistake with a neon transformer it will get your attention BUT it wont kill you. Let me know if you would like to learn more Andrew
@joshsinko76
@joshsinko76 Год назад
Their is 9500 to 11500 volts in a neon sign transformer it just doesn't burn as hot so fast as a microwave transformer does. It burns better detail but at the same time not as deep in most cases. I've got several of both transformers. I haven't checked the amps on the neon sign transformer but if I had to quess I would lean to think that it is just as high or higher. Anyway point I'm trying to add is purchase a Veriac voltage regulator run your power through the regulator then out to the transformer of choice turn the power on and turn the knob on the regulator up increasing the volts until you get the desired burn your going for the more you increase it the hotter it gets. I'm sure you get the picture. Both are very dangerous in each of their own ways. Hahahaha it's just insane to me that today we have to hold everyone's hand in every little single way to protect them to protect ourselves from getting in trouble or whatever bc they didn't protect themselves and got hurt it's the dumbest thing ever. People see it is burning it is obviously hot seeing that it is on fire. Duh. It is plugged into the wall it's got arcs of power coming off the ends of the leeds that are touching the wood. Don't touch you idiot!!!! But go ahead and touch it at your own risk. Hahahahahaha it's absolutely dumb that we in today's world have to tell grown men and women to protect yourself Don't touch that it can hurt you badly or kill you. When the most dangerous thing we do everyday is get behind the wheel of a car and boy their are some straight crazies on the road behind the wheel of a car. Why don't they ban these drag racing or doing burnouts or donuts in intersections on public streets for. Car in the middle of intersection doing donuts ok people don't get close watch out you can get hurt if you get too close or if the dumbass behind the wheel slips up and loses control or if you prefer to stand as close to the action as you wish be my guest go right ahead get right up in there on the action be sure to hang your head down low and out to get the best shot of the action. Hahahahaha bunch of dummies. Why doesn't RU-vid make you agree to some sort of agreement when signing up to app. Not responsible for the content you find and view on this app nor its creators are not responsible for your actions if you become injured or impaled maimed or beheaded or lose a limb or die. No one is responsible for you not being safe don't be stupid work smarter and good luck stay safe your the only one responsible for What you do or what happens to you or anything from you Trying anything seen on this app. Play with fire while stupid not a good thing will not get the result you were going for your the only one responsible for being stupid and getting hurt. Hahahahah

BruceBurns, is that a pun on the process or your real name? Anyway - great choice to work with complimentary colors instead of the neon blue/green or jet black we so often see in this genre of work. Thought the legs were a bit heavy in section for this table top? but the top design is just great. Thanks for posting your work.

And thanks for your input on the legs, I always welcome criticism. To be honest, the legs are often an afterthought in my table making process and that’s something I should think about more; taking the time to find legs that complement the top. If you use a matte clear glaze coating on your work or even a gloss glaze spray on coat before doing your fill of the burn pattern you don't have to do all the scraping and sanding potentially losing some of the pattern left from the burn process I've been doing these for sometime as well and have spent hours and days sanding. Bc usually your going to apply a finish of either a gloss finish or matte finish over the entire piece when finished. It saves a ton of time my friend try it and let me know what you think. Great piece by the way looks great.
@bruceburnswoodshop1620
@bruceburnswoodshop1620 Год назад
So I used to coat the whole piece in shellac before pouring but I ran into problems when sanding the excess epoxy off because it would take some of the shellac of and come out uneven. What finish do you use before pouring in the burns?
@joshsinko76
@joshsinko76 Год назад
@@bruceburnswoodshop1620 yes I would always sand my piece to the finish I wanted the smoothness that is then burn it that way i wouldn't lose any of the finer details in the burn. Then if I was going with a gloss finish or a flat matte finish i would spray the whole piece let it dry and then possibly another light spray to coat the areas that may have soaked up the glaze coat leaving some or the grain lightly still exposed. Well I skipped a step depending on how I felt or what the detail of the burn was I would run a small pick like dental pick through the smaller more detailed sections of the burn and wire brush some of the carbon out of the entire burn. Then wash it off.allow to dry then spray the glaze. Now I'm back on track. After the glaze dries make sure you have a real good glaze coat on it even that is. That glaze I'd gonna fill in any small undulations on the piece. Then pour your epoxy into your burn still trying to minimize as much overflow running all over but it happens I think you know what im talking about. Just not having it in a complete mess. Anyway allow that coat after using like a plastic bondo type putty knife or trowel allow it to set up just a little so it's settled and not so runny. Use a clean putty knife metal or plastic being careful not to gouge grooves in the piece run it over the flat and all of the epoxy will pretty much be gone. Yes their will be a fine coating on the piece of epoxy that didn't come off sometimes I've even used some old Rags and gone around it if I felt like it was gonna leave a bubble or raised spot on the piece. But if you ever have noticed how when the say blue colored epoxy you mixed up and poured out when it is stretched out thin it almost doesn't have a tinted color to it anymore bc the background is overpowering it leaving it clear again. Then I would pour a clear coat of epoxy as a glaze coat to fill in any dips and imperfections and stuff that coat will fill in any fine scratches and things making it a mirror finish be sure to still check for air bubbles and remove them with torch. It will eliminated all that finish sanding it may add several hours of more dry time for the piece because of the extra pour glaze coat at the end of the project but that leaves time to work on something else productive instead of standing in the same place wearing a low spot in floor from standing there sanding for 5 hours or whatever it takes you can work on the next project or grab a beer or beverage of choice and sit down for a breather I can't hardly sit down longer than 10-15 mins before I notice something over here or over there that needs straightening up or fixed or just whatever. It just utilizes the time you waiting on it to dry instead of having to waste all that energy just sanding bc 80 percent of the time you spend on a finished piece is spent on sanding buffing polishing or whatever and it just gets monotonous I think. The key is to finish sand your piece to the finish you prefer and then burn. That is the main thing. Basically doing the project in reverse at first. But no glaze before doing your burn would probably just burn and stink up the shop or catch fire. Keep doing what you do good looking work you are doing my friend take care and reach out whenever in need I do the same. That's why these pages are started anyway is to be able to network learn and progress your skills or trade to build your knowledge. Hope ot works out for you I've not had a issue with this process but everyone is different I suppose but this is actually the first time I've shared this ever I hope it helps

Awesome piece!! In fractal burning can you paint a channel of the baking soda water solution instead of saturating an entire piece? My thoughts were to try and direct a single burn channel from corner to corner of a piece. Thanks
@bruceburnswoodshop1620
@bruceburnswoodshop1620 Год назад
Ya you can definitely do that! I like to soak the entire piece because the baking soda solution will actually change the appearance of the wood and it would look uneven if the entire piece does not get saturated! And thank you btw!

First off, Beautiful job! I was surprised that you only sanded down to 240 grit before pouring the finish. I thought Rubio required like, 600 to really show off the woodgrain. Yours came out excellent though. (That was cool, to give a shoutout to Cam. I'm a fan, also. I wonder how many woodworkers he has inspired.)

we used a neon light tranformer. higher voltage. i finally hooked up and insulated couple screw drivers. then you could control touch where you was burning. so cool cause you could right someones name while burning.
@ThinkingBetter
@ThinkingBetter Год назад
Anyone following such guidelines might die from it. The shock from a neon sign transformer can also be lethal. The high voltage allows a large current to flow, even with light contact against dry skin or through some arc. The transformer is current-limited, but typically to a level well above the threshold for ventricular fibrillation. The big issue is when you have much higher voltage you also allow arcs to form on much bigger distances. A screwdriver that has microscopic cracks in the plastic handle could easily be lethal, for example, if the transformer outputs 15kV and the distance through a crack is one centimeter. Screwdrivers are not designed for isolating such voltage at all and as plastic ages over time it naturally can get microscopic cracks. Your screwdrivers might be safe, but random people doing random choices might not see the next day.

Was it table top epoxy or deep pour epoxy? Table top epoxy is only meant to be poured up to 1/4 inch thick or so at most. Deep pour epoxy can be poured much thicker without it over heating. Don’t ask me how I know 😂
@diecksl
@diecksl Год назад
@@bruceburnswoodshop1620 Ah, that explains why the epoxy that you used looks viscous like water. I wasn't aware that different sorts of epoxy exist (I guess the one you use for your tables uses less hardener so it takes longer but doesn't heat up that much).

My husband and I are making a swing in memory of my Dad. The seat has fractal burning...I want to use the colored epoxy. It will be outside, what would be the best product to use? Will the monocoat be enough? We talked about polyurethane, but not sure. Please advise...we LOVE your work...
@bruceburnswoodshop1620
@bruceburnswoodshop1620 Год назад
I would use a table top epoxy with colored pigment to fill the burns. For finish, there’s really no finish that does well outside. An oil based polly can yellow with direct sunlight. With all my experience using different finishes I have found Rubio to be the best overall, easiest to apply and the best protection. I’m not sure how well it will hold up outside but they do make a maintenance oil you can re apply as needed. That might be your best bet!

I have a question about the epoxy adhering,,, I haven't tried using epoxy on wood, but after watching your video and seeing what table looked like when finished, your table really turned out beautiful , an now would like to try but not with jumper cables, 😆 , mainly asking about using epoxy, can i buy the epoxy in different colors ? or would I have to add a color ? If you would have used straight clear epoxy to fill the gaps in the wood that you filled the table mold in with , the space or gaps between the wood, would the epoxy been a really clear see through , given you didn't add any color to Epoxy that is ? MY QUESTION, about epoxy, HOW well does epoxy adhere to the wood securely ? WHEN, in your video, you laid the pieces of tree wood slabs inside the square table mold, and the pieces were gapped, kept completely separate from each other, and then you poured the epoxy inside the table mold,, DOES the epoxy adhere to the sides of the wood securely to when table is finished, the table can hold the weight of say like,, (for an example) like the weight of a computer 🖥️ ? wood burning with using jumper cables, can you do that on any type of wood ? ALSO, do you spray a baking soda and water mixture on wood before you clamp the jumper cables to the wood ? Ive did a lot of wood burning but haven't did wood burning with using jumper cables, and with using epoxy, FOR REAL THAT IS A UNIQUE PATTERN WITH WOOD BURNING , USING JUMPER CABLES, & YES, FOR REAL WITH BEING SAFE,, DEFINITELY HAVE TO BE 100% WITH SAFETY !!!! Thank you for sharing your video, 🤠 Happy Wood crafting !

Epoxy is clear I added color pigment to it. If your poured it clear it’s really hard to keep bubbles from showing up or dust getting in there. The wood to epoxy bold and the epoxy it’s self is stronger than wood.

Looks nice. Probably would look even better with no burn in features. I mean bottom part looked better than actual top. Also does it kill wood integrity when you stress it out with such intensive 🔥? Wonder how long it will last before it will fall apart. Not to mention epoxy might also lose strength when hrat coming close to it.
@bruceburnswoodshop1620
@bruceburnswoodshop1620 Год назад
The epoxy bond is stronger than the wood itself. Not sure what hrat is but if it’s some kind of table destroying monster it could definitely do some damage. 🤷‍♂️

@@milkod2001 epoxy when fully cured is food safe. But you can’t cut over epoxy. So you can make a serving tray or charcuterie with epoxy but not a cutting board.
