Interesting how many people in the US are doing this now, but all hand stitching is popular. I am 70 and have been stitching more than 60 years. I was taught as a child to sew hexagons into Grandmother's Flower garden quilts but we did not use paper templates. If you were a beginner you were taught to mark the quarter inch seams. Recently I tried hexiforms, they don't come out like the paper but I would never use that as a quilt, too stiff. I also tried the technique that Emma Jones RU-vidr does where you put batting and a larger hexigon and sew it around and that has been my fav. I love any quilt as you go technique.
Great video! I love your project. You may have discovered this by now but Decobob is 100% polyester. It is “cottonized” which is what Wonderfil calls the process they use to make it behave a bit more like cotton but no cotton is used. I normally use Aurifil 50 weight cotton but I’m going to try out the Decobob soon. It looks nice!
Thank you, I just started doing EPP this week and have just started cutting hexagons out and glue basting them. So I am even more excited about getting them sewn together now that I have watched your video. I was very nervous about starting this and now I feel relieved after watching you. Thank you 😊
I have been making quilts for 52 years, and never tried EPP, after watching a friend doing it, I finally decided to give it a try, your tips have been very helpful, especially the one with the sandpaper. I don't know why I waited so long to give this a try, I have always loved hand sewing, I guess I thought it would be hard to do, but it isn't, and it's very relaxing to do. Thank You for sharing your time, and your talent with all of us.
You are a brilliant teacher. I've watched a lot of beginner EPP vids waiting for the hexies and other templates to appear so I can say that I have learned more from you than I have almost all the others. TFS!
What a lovely thing to share, Rachellee! I'm so glad you've found it to be helpful! I'm still learning as well, so I'll be sure to keep sharing tips that I find to be useful as I hone my skills. :)
I took the first step and purchased my templates. This came about because I wanted a project to work on while visiting family. I like the portability. Ty for the tips.
Thanks you so much for your beautifully detailed explanation. I’ve always wanted to know how this is done. Thanks and now I also want to try it. 🎉 will def give it a try .
I now know what my new project for this coming winter will be, thanks. I have been knitting dish cloths and we have so many lol lovely instruction, so soothing to listen to you.
great video! TFS! a couple tips that might help... do not pull your papers out till you have all sides secured to another hexi (or any shape) and if you do a nicker knot at the beginning and end the corners are very secure and wont come out after washing. ALSO! I do a nicker knot half way (or more than one per side if larger) just in case years later one come undone it will have extra knots to keep the shape together
@@aquiltingtale6230 it's just a small VERY! secure knot using both the working end and tail end of the thread. Wrap the working end one time around needle as usual then use the tail (coming from needle eye) to wrap a second loop and pull through. its tiny but mighty lol.
Really enjoyed your video. I am a beginner and yet to sew my many 1 inch Hexies. My project is to make a memory table runner for my daughter in law who lost her dear dad suddenly at the earlier part of this year. Its a surprise. Its mainly fussy cutting birds, which he loved and a good mixture of animals. They live in the Jurassic part of Devon and so i have included some great Dinosaur material, butterflies, fish you name it. Bees were a favourite too. Just hope i can work out the right pattern i want to do. Thanks again x
Thanks for the great video! The sandpaper is 400 (see the big 400 printed on it) :) 600 is a little better. Also your iron might have been recalled due to a faulty connection between the cord and iron. I know this as I had the exact one and Amazon sent me a notice to send it back.
Ha! As my grandpa used to tell me, "If it was a snake, it would have bit you already." 😅 Thanks for the warning about the iron. I just bought it this summer at Joann's, so hopefully the issue is fixed. I'll make sure not to leave it unattended though. I've heard of mini irons catching fire.
Just wanted to say that you should press, not iron, your fabric. Ironing can distort your fabric, while pressing the fabric will not. Also, I find that a 3/8 inch edge is easier for me to baste. I am a beginner like you, but I am older and have arthritis issues. Also, it’s easier for me to use the rotary cutter than the scissors when I cut. I enjoyed your video! 😃
Thanks, Judy! Yes, ironing back and forth is a hard habit for me to break, and I do it absent-mindedly sometimes, even when I know pressing is the way to go. Good catch. Thanks for sharing tips to help with arthritis too. I hope you're enjoying EPP as much as I am!
Hi Judy. I’m returning to quilting after a 15 yr absence. So many new products. But I know the difference between pressing and ironing. It’s common to watch videos where demonstrators use the wrong process. ePP istotally new to me. Found a cute pin cushion using that process that I’m anxious to try. Anyway, thanks for making the correction/observation. Grandma Mary
When you do your stripes fabric, me I will use coloured pens or felts !! Will be more easy! I am not got to design like you so colour will be more visible
Very helpful video! I had always wanted to try it but felt intimidated. You are a great teacher I finally understand how the gluing works. Btw I love the colors you chose. I’m trying to guess the weight of the hexagon, would poster board from Dollar Tree work or is that too thick? I was thinking of using my cutting machine to cut the hexagons with. Thanks for a great video.
Hi, Lucy! Thank you for the lovely feedback. The hexagons I use feel thinner than poster board (more like scrapbooking paper or a light cardstock), but I would think poster board thickness would be okay. You might punch a hole in the centers to help remove them, because poster board is stiffer. I wouldn't go much thicker than poster board because there might be a bigger gap between the wrong sides of the glued seams, so that might impact the shape when you remove the papers. Let me know if you try poster board and how it works out. EPP is such a relaxing, satisfying way to quilt. I hope you love it!
@@aquiltingtale6230 oh ok I do have scrapbooking paper I’m not fond of so I will try that. Thank you for your response. I like how portable it is. Will definitely try.
First time watching your channel😁Enjoyed your tips, what brand of mini iron are you using? Thank you for putting together this video and all the time it takes to do this‼️💖
That glue will be more easy to take off if you have a problem to spray a little bit of water on the bad side and the glue will let you take off the paper!
Am watching your EPP video. Where did you get that neat little green gizmo that holds your thread and glue pen? Apologies if you cover that further into the video! 🤐
Very good video. Today is my first day trying epp and my question is: when I want to add it to a project (like a purse) is it appliquéd on top? Thanks!
Hi there! I'm going to applique each EPP block to a rectangular background and sew those rectangles together on my machine to complete a quilt top. I'm waiting until all my EPP blocks are done to do so, because I want to make sure the mix of background colors is balanced after I decide the layout of the EPP blocks. :)
I know, I'm behind on all the videos I want to make, but I haven't forgotten about it. Is there anything in particular that you'd like me to address? I'm compiling a list of what I want to include in a follow up video. :)
I tried ordering hexagons on line and got the wrong size. Apparently you don just measure them across. Could you tell me how to measure the ones i have so i can order more of the right size?
Not sure if you're aware, but you can move ahead in videos by clicking on the time bar or double tapping the right side of your screen. I also provide chapters in the description if you're not a fan of my introduction style and want to skip ahead to specific parts. Have a good day.
Good morning, Shaylin … I’m also newish to EPP and appreciate so much the tips and tricks that I am learning from RU-vid videos. Your instructions are clear … Thank you for that! I haven’t done fussy cutting yet but ready to try it. 🧵
Hi, Anne! I'm so glad you found it helpful. I think you'll enjoy fussy cutting. The possibilities and "wow" factor you can add to your design will make it worth trying! Have fun!
