Epson Perfection V330 Scanning Negative Film Strips (How to) 

It's a durable scanner. I've scanned thousands of drawings for animation and it's still running after 5 years of use.

Wear cotton gloves when scanning negatives or slides (available from photo supply houses) so that oils from the hand don't contaminate the negative. Over time these oils will destroy the negative. A 300 dpi jpeg of a scan is useless for printing. Always scan at the highest rate the scanner will scan with interpolation. If it's a 2400 dpi scanner, scan at 2400 dpi. Save as a tiff. Jpegs are lossy formats and discard color which you can't get back. Tiffs will save all of the color information.

Thanks, I've had my Scanner for about 4 Years. Up until today I hadn't known how to Scan Negatives. The instructions that came with the Scanner, told how to Scan Photos but not Negatives.

Thanks. I have this scanner for 10 years now an never figured it out until I watched your video. Apparently, the Epson software barely works with Windows 11. The scan button is nearly invisible but if I click the box where it would be, it works. The only problem I have now is that the first slide is good but the rest are all cut off at different parts. If I slide the negatives over to compensate for it, it still seems to pick up the same scans and are still all messed up. Thanks again.

Nice video and presentation, I could never really comprehend how those things quite worked but now I get it. One issue, you are getting your thumb prints all over those negative - maybe use some gloves or only hold them by the edges. Thanks for taking the time to share.

The guy makes a video showing how to use the scanner - while even Epson haven't done that - and people freak out about the background music. Oh, the first world problems..

@s jones have you managed to scan ? I just offered this as a xmas gift to my father and he wrote me the same thing happened, he just scanned the strip holder on the glass.

And what about 120 film? is it compatible?

I believe V330 is the old model, the current model is V370. That's what I found on the Epson website anyway. How does V330 or the V370 compare to Canon CanoScan 9000F? Any major differences there?... besides the price?

Do you have any experience in scanning with this scanner on Windows 10? For some reason a customer of mine can't get the negative film option.

Just bought the v370 and had trouble scanning B&W negs, the documentation is next to useless, your video has sorted it, however, please reduce the volume of your "Background" music it's very overpowering.

Someone can help me? I have bought an epson v370 today, i try to install the epson scanner software opening "install navi" on the cd, but it says that Epson have to update the application. Now, i'm not a professional photographer and I don't want to pay for a Vuescan or something like that. What can i do? Is there any update download from epson site? I do not see any on their site. I wonder if you could tell me, does this scanner scan other film negatives besides 35mm, and I'm talking in particular formats like 115, 128 or 120?. I'm looking for a film scanner that will scan those small negatives which were quite popular in the 80s, and also the large, single B&W negatives which were common in the 1950s and 60s. Will this do those?. Also, is there a way the Epson V330 (or any similar scanner) allow you to freely scan what area of the negative you want, without losing or automatically cropping out any area of the negative?. I have a bogstandard standalone negative scanner and you have no control over what it scans, it just scans what it is adjusted to, and there is a certain part of the image that is cropped out.

I have this scanner for years and didn't know it has a negative holder behind that white board!!?? I almost put it on ebay for $30!

I just got a v370 and I am getting really mad because I can't see my slides. Someone please help me. All it did was make a stupid image of how I placed the slides on the glass. I bought this damn thing so I could see my slides and alter the color and everything else. I am not happy. I want to see my family history on these slides.

Distracting, annoying and uneccesary music. Why? It didn't enhance the video a jot and attracted a down-thumb.

jpeg is not the right format for scanning , tiff would be so much better because it does not compress the image information. You can use the jpeg after checking the result in photoshop or lightroom.

I was going to get this scanner as a very old scanner of mine finally gave in, but the film scanning just seems like so much of a hassle to set up. My old hp scanner had the film and slide holder built into the top lid, so you just slid the film in. Thanks for the video as I was unsure how this process worked on this particular scanner..thumbs up

Thank you very much . I played with this thing for hours, got prints to scan OK but when it came to negatives or slides, could not make it work. The instructions did NOT indicate you had to remove the document screen. Great video...!!!!!!!

Can you scan 120 film also?

A friend has let me borrow an Epson Perfection 3170 Photo Scanner and all I have is the Scanner Software that works with Windows up to XP. My computer runs Windows 7 and I'm wondering if it will work. Also will it work with 110 filmstrips?

Yes, 300 dpi for a small 35mm negative is not enough. This scanner is 4800x9600.

Make sure that the emulsion faces the scanner head. If not done they will be reversed. Although not a problem because it can be reversed in photoshop.

V500 and V550 are where 120/medium support begins.

Very good instruction. Saved my from myself. But is there ANY way to re-mix and lose the dimwit "music?" Not up to Epson standards by a long shot.

Robert you scan negative in 300 dpi and save to jpg... Its not good. Its very bad idea.
