Good morning you awesome war torn camera geeks! Today we re-examine for 2022 a very special and unique camera. It is the world’s first digital rangefinder, it is the Epson R-D1!
I have been using the R-D1 since 2006 so in this video I will share all my experiences with this camera, good and bad, to help you make an informed decision should you be looking to buy an Epson R-D1 in 2022. As always, plenty of sample pics with a variety of lenses to help you make your decision.

I snagged a R-D1 from KEH for a little under $1400 about 8 months ago. At the time it felt very risky, like something I'd regret. But I was really shocked at how much I loved it. Ended up getting a Pentax ist DL 2 months later to compare. The sensors may be the same but the Epson is a "richer" experience. I had more issues with the Pentax than the Epson so far. The Pentax had focus alignment issues causing it to back focus (had to learn how to get into diagnostics to adjust that), and the sensor has a ton of hot pixels that I don't know how to map out. Thanks for the awesome and very balanced video about this Gem!

Thanks for your kind words and for sharing your experiences! I totally understand what you mean by that risky feeling when buying it. You got a good price at one of my favorite dealers ever, KEH! Totally agree about the “richer” experience of the R-D1, most DSLRs simply cannot compare to the R-D1 when it comes to user experience. here in 2024.... I WANT THAT CAMERA!! hahaha And the thumb winder.. YES!!! I have the Fujifil X100s and f, and a winder would be perfect for it...

Thanks! Lucky indeed! It was actually a camera of the day when I got it, still somewhat of an enigma in 2006. Not unlike someone buying a Sony A9 today and having it for sixteen years. Appreciate your comments!

Speaking of low megapixel camera legends: lets not forget the Nikon D2Hs with the Nikon JFET LBCAST 4.1 mp sensor! Those DX pixels are huge! The regular D2H has the same sensor but the S has deeper buffers and 12bit JPG processing vs 10bit.

True yes! Always been a big fan of the D2H/D2Hs and that unique JFET LBCAST sensor! I in fact have a short written review from a few years back on Camera Legend. As you said those pixels are huge, and I like to call them PHAT pixels give a richness to the tonality that’s hard to replicate with denser sensors. Thanks for reminding me of the incredible D2Hs!!

OK man, you sold me. Those CCD sensors are so expensive to make. But all the cameras in outer space, medicine and engineering use CCD sensors, in those applications where fidelity is a must !!! (They might be supercooled too.)

A very intriguing camera CL and one that I would love to try but I'm not hardcore enough (or flush with cash) so I will just have to keep a causal eye out at various car boots/flea markets here in the UK for one from an unsuspecting seller...

Hi Chris, I can totally respect that! In fact a thinking man might find spending that kind of cash on this camera a bit reckless! great, Sam.have merxy, stop shwing us gorgeous camras ! which gves bestresults, this or Contax RVS-D?lke to know if$konca AR and Topcon RE lenses are goof enough, adapted to Sony E.mount. Tpcon lenses were, I think used nx JXII/JAPANESE Govt.,as benchmarksandard for optical ndustry, at one stage. Konica's old slogan was 'its the lens' dzndards,wde angles, please.

I think it's without a doubt that the Epson R-D1 will produce better images than the Contax TVS Digital, rangefinder vs point and shoot. Konica lenses are awesome! Thanks much and Merry Xmas to you.
