Ha Ha, Toto killed it. My neighbor seems happy with his, I haven't had a chance to drive his yet but it is nice, I like it. I have an S-Class and I can't say I would change that for this but an actual electric S-Class would be very nice. It's interesting that you compared it to a CLS because that's what his EQS replaced, a CLS AMG. If I were to go out and buy an electric car right now I would probably lean towards the e-Tron GT, that thing looks mean.
@@TheSmokingTire If redesigning the brake pedal, I always thought that including a detent somewhere mid-travel to indicate the end of regen and the start of friction braking would make the most sense. The current trend of fixed regen braking levels make as much sense to me as fixed steering increments or fixed throttle levels. There is already a pedal for stopping, so why not task it with modulating all forms of braking? By avoiding the detent and friction brakes, you could learn to drive in the most efficient manner. You'd also retain the ability to coast and not need to constantly keep your foot controlling the throttle pedal outside of cruise control.
The looks are there for sure, but the fact they screwed up the chance to make it ride like silk is the real letdown. Someone probably cooked the brakes, when Zack slammed on them, that’s obvious they are glazed BADLY. EV acceleration is turned down for comfort no doubt, 600+ lb.ft is still no joke but they are completely out klassed here in every way except the perception of interior durability.
@@TheSmokingTire I drove one for a day and loved it. Brake pedal was perfectly normal. My own cars are a 2019 G550 and a 2019 AMG GTC. So I’m familiar with how a brake pedal should feel ;)
Pricing of these seems excessive for what it is. The EQE seems even worse however, a mid spec one in the UK with sub 300bhp is £85,000 which is more than a decent spec Taycan utter madness!
I've driven the Taycan. It's terriffic! But for me in California, the 225mile real world range makes it a non starter as a choice. High voltage charging stations are scarce here (when they work) Really Tesla is the only choice here if you actually like going someplace in your GT. I'm afraid it's going to remain this way for sometime.
@@gregmcable +1. .. Tesla has a decade head start in the number of charge stations and pick of the location litter. . Tesla charger locations is to the power of 10 above all EV comers; VW/Audi/Porsche, MB, Lucid, and the rest. . An informed EV buyer will have thought charging / locations through. .... What's that time-honored line? .. "Its the Charger Locations Stupid"
Just bought the entry level 450+ amg line without the hyperscreen. All i can say is i have 0 regrets. Ultinately people need to understand that buying a car is so subjective. To be honest i do not give a darn abt speed and honestly i felt that even with the single motor its faster den a regular s class as i own the s320 as well. My purpose was a confortable luxury family car and this beast did more than that imo. Seats were so comfortable and futuristic as i got the cream color. Changed my wheels to the 21 inch ones and grille to the eqs 53 grille which made it look sportier. Ride was so smooth comfortable and honestly i am not a v8 engine kinda guy either. And tbh being one of the first few to drive it in my country i get head turns everywhere i go. The build quality on my car was near perfection unlike the tesla which has loose ends everywhere and taycan which very oftenly breaks down the latter especially. So ultimately its perspective =) the porshe taycan / etron gts / tesla / bmw were all in my cards when i test drive to find a new ev and honestly none of them could compare to the comfort and experience the eqs could give. Well maybe the bmw ix could but even so the price is way pricier and seats still are not as comfy. Well if you are a family guy or someone who prefers comfort and luxury over speed this wins any sport brands hands down. U can fit 3 strollers in the boot =). A surf board if you want as well. But if you are a taycan kind of guy well obviously look elsewhere =)
Definitely not an S-class in any stretch of the imagination, in my mind at least. The styling lacks all the grace of the S-class. Why not just make an electric S-class? Seems more sensible, less R&D, no need to include yet ANOTHER model in the portfolio (as if Mercedes needs any more models). That said, it’s Infinitely better than a Tesla. This car will actually feel like you spent $100,000.
Because an S class cannot fit enough batteries to give it more than a 50 mile range. Futhermore, its drag coefficient, which happens to be a huge factor in highway speed range efficiency, is like a brick in comparison.
“Efficiency”… it’s an almost 6000lbs pig, how about working on that first. Come on, you guys have to come up with a better one than that. No one interested in an S-class will cross-shop with this thing. Yet another model added to the ever growing portfolio of Mercedes models that don’t sell well. Not that I like it, but BMW successfully created a fully electric 7 series. Don’t tell me Mercedes could not do the same with the S-class.
Frightening brakes and weird ride? It’s insane that this made it production with such fundamental flaws when the S-class is so superb. And the styling? Oh lord.
Guys the brakes you describe are how the car is. We got an EQS 580 at my Porsche dealer and that was the stand out “What were they thinking” aspect. It wasn’t from track testing. That’s how they are. It’s insane.
Rear Steering clarification: In the US, the car was origionally supposed to come with 4.5 degree standard and 10 degree optinal, and some of the first thousand or so pilot build cars only have the 4.5 degree (some seem to not have any at all) but they decided 10 degree would be standard, along with ventiullated seats, before regualar production started but after some of those early builds had already been built. So yeah, a little odd. If your vin ends 2000 or later, you almost certainly have 10 degree, but a decent chunk of the less then 2000, especially less then 1000 vins have 4.5 degree, and a few of them even have a $1300 credit for said missing standard.
@@Snoetzel87 Many had it, but I've seen probably a dozen with vins up to 1500 that have on the build sheet 4.5 degree rear steering and at least two with code D9C missing standard rear axel steering
Hey guys, love your videos. I am a Taycan owner. I have to say that the Taycan has the same "issue" with the variable brake pedal during regen. However, it is much less noticeable because Taycans have no regen paddles. But when using the adaptive cruise control or regen button, it is definitely there. So you are calling out a trend in German EVs broadly - not just the EQS.
Although Apple Carplsy does all that and more and you don’t type your destination in, you apeak it. All the manufacturers bundle their mediocre, soon to be dated Navi with things you actually want forcing you to get something that , in my case, I never use. Infuriating.
I thought the braking was fine (and my dailies are ‘19 G550 and AMG GTC). But, I didn’t change the regen. This is a car for my Dad and he hates regen. He wants the same brake feel as he’s been used to, and that’s what the EQS provided. I am glad that regen is not mandatory.
"where are these trucks going?" "The aquaduct." "The Aquaduct? Why are these trucks going to a horse racing track?" "Not that Aquaduct! THIS aquaduct!"
A motoring journalist here in the UK actually phoned Mercedes when testing this car as he thought the brakes were faulty and dangerous after almost having an accident!!
21:48 Those touch screens are so sluggish. Even my Galaxy S4 from about 10 years ago was so much more responsive than the flagship mercedes from 2022. How is this acceptable?
When the car is in "Eco" mode, the controls become sluggish due in part to the battery saving code most of the onboard systems are running. Once back in normal operating modes, the response times of the touch screens are actually quite impressive.
@@coreygolphenee9633 A smartphone is exposed to much more abuse than a screen installed into the dashboard, as it's being pulled out of the pocket 100 times a day, dropped and so on. Also, car manufacturers could make screens as sturdy as they like, because unlike a phone, those screens don't need to be either slim or lightweight. Lastly, why would any of this even be relevant with regards to the performance and responsiveness of the system? Again, it's completely unacceptable that these screens are so sluggish.
So you have 6 or possibilities for user profiles (which you will never use), you can set everything and save it for the profile but you have to set up regen every time again... what is there left to say?
@@neohimself tough to find a source for regulation. But you can see the video in autogefühl YT channel in the video EQE 350+ first drive review which was driven in USA ! He drives with a Merc engineer there and he explains it.
Lucid manages a 280 liter frunk right on top a 600 hp front motor in a 25 cm shorter car, Merc gives you none even in a RWD car. And NOT EVER a heat pump, so winter range is the worst relative to EPA/WLTP of any brand. Sadly the Lucid Air somehow has to have a silly letterbox sedan boot. Which customer ever wants that over a lift gate or estate boot? And no wagon version for ANY of the EVs out there of course.
I think the EQS SUV is going to be the one to buy at this price point. The whole reason to buy an S-class over an E-class is the rear seat. The SUV fixes that problem.
Just wondering if we will care as much about 0-60 as every EV/SUV grocery-getter to come does it in 5 seconds? Do you currently enter into launch mode to get the drop on the ‘91 Civic (with Pep Boys wing) in the other lane? EV’s raise all kinds of unexpected questions.
Interesting comment on the driver warning; could it be your seating position? From everything I was taught you look far away from the steering wheel and somewhat low. I believe you're supposed to sit close enough to be able to rest your wrist on the top of the steering wheel at a light stretch, and adjust height until your eyeline is around the mid point of the windscreen. I'm sure you'll say you're comfortable as you are, but you'll get used to however you sit over time...
I wonder why so many people lean so far back while driving, it's why they cant see all they want of the display and you see less of the road, more of the sky, and ultimately driving with almost stretched arms gives less control. Fail!
Interesting. I’ve a EQC400 for a couple of months and I too felt the brakes were too weak. However regen braking was really strong, and it did go to D double minus not just single minus.
Also not the first to complain about the terrible ride quality. They probably released it before it was ready to keep their fleet's gas mileage figures in compliance with Euro/USA regs. So just another throwaway EV whereas the Tesla/Rivian/Lucid and Chinese makers are actually innovating.
Johnny Smith in the UK has been saying the same about the brakes - he said he almost had a crash because he went deep into the brakes and they still did very little.
The steering wheel adjustment warning might be why Tesla made that knight rider steering wheel? So the top won't obstruct the sensors, no matter the wheel height.
It’s just so weird seeing you two do a road test with no exhaust note, or any shifting, absolutely no driving engagement with a electrical Car, I’m sorry you Tree Huggers, but nothing can replace the sweet sound of a internal conversion engine. The Fiesta Flash. 🤙🏼🍺🍺🍺
H-m-m-m-m. Have owned & driven many luxury brands over my life. Love @ first sight on the EQS! Purchased the EQS580 and must affirm (like all of the new tech cars) you need to use it, spend the time understanding it & in my opinion you will be a pleased motorist. After 4 other EVs from Tesla Model 3 & Model Y’s to Genesis GV60 this car is wow! In your commentary, at least compare it to the Model S which is lacking in many ways to this car. Tesla has great tech, super-charging, but after that still not upper level luxury. EQS580 has the speed if you need it, the ride comfort & quiet interior with many standard features is superior to many other brands I have demoed. Price, not in my budget….CPO Mercedes most definitely is! Braking has not been an issue in any mode from no regenerative to strong to all versions of regenerative. Hey Mercedes has been exceptional & their beta AI IS REALLY A HOOT. Just another view point, but realize that like most reviewers, your job is to (in a short use case) to describe issues before longer use.
The upcoming BMW i7 is going to embarrass this car. Seems like MB missed the mark on this one, which I really wouldn't have expected them to do, especially in this segment.
Oh man. That steering wheel position issue is an killer. I’m only 5’10” and yet the steering wheel blocks the gauges in almost every car I drive. I live with it, but at least they don’t bitch at me every 20 minutes for obscuring the tech. Is the idea with the brake pedal that the first bit of travel is the regen, whether or not you have 1 pedal turned on? So strange.
Matt knows! This is totally a CLS. It's just called an S-Class because it was the "first". That's disappointing, because the CLS has been a pioneering vehicle since it was conceived of. That brake pedal configuration is actually contra to how SBC brakes were configured. That system could tap the pad against the disc to prep the brakes for rapid application and dry the discs in the rain. Also, why is the driver sensor not with the rear view mirror any more? It's trying to stare into your soul! Riddle me this one. Does the electric BMW 7 series have significantly less range than this? Is it otherwise a lesser vehicle? I do hear it's heavy. Which of these two is the more appealing, assuming this does represent an electric S-Class for now.?
I was getting this based off the concept which it looks nothing like. The drive is nice, interior looks better in photos than in real life, quality isn't there on interior materials
This is the only car in history that has given me legitimate nightmares. That dash made me feel like i was being sucked into a black hole and driving off a cliff at the same time.
Lol I love the part “on the other hand a positive is there is great storage”. Important, but yikes seems like they really missed the mark. Start to sound more and more like a really expensive minivan as the review went on.
I would have liked to see them getting into and out of this car when they changed places. One is 5'10" and the other 6'3". I am 6'1" and I was unable to get into the car without moving my head around. Maybe entering head first is the way to go. I think if you are under 5"6" you would have no issues. Anybody taller than that will have an issue.
Just took the first long weekend trip in my Lucid Air. I've had the car for about 2 weeks and still can't stop looking at it. The EQS interior looks like they were trying too hard and the Tesla leaves me cold. If I didn't get the Lucid I would have gone for the Taycan but having put some miles on it now I am so glad to be driving the Lucid, even with all the potential downsides of a startup. It is a driver's car.
