We have allowed a radical inequality to evolve within our political system; we don’t see it, but we must repair it if we’re to have a democracy that might count. Professor Lawrence Lessig explains that our democracy is failing, not because there are too many Republicans in Congress, or too many Democrats, but because the basic commitment of a representative democracy - political equality - has been denied in this fast paced talk. Lawrence Lessig is the Roy L. Furman Professor of Law and Leadership at Harvard Law School. Prior to rejoining the Harvard faculty, Lessig was a professor at Stanford Law School, where he founded the school’s Center for Internet and Society, and at the University of Chicago. He clerked for Judge Richard Posner on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and Justice Antonin Scalia on the United States Supreme Court. Lessig serves on the Board of the AXA Research Fund, and on the advisory boards of Creative Commons and the Sunlight Foundation. He is a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Association, and has received numerous awards, including the Free Software Foundation’s Freedom Award, Fastcase 50 Award and being named one of Scientific American’s Top 50 Visionaries. Lessig holds a BA in economics and a BS in management from the University of Pennsylvania, an MA in philosophy from Cambridge, and a JD from Yale. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Yes. Outrage and Anger just wears and tears us down. Acknowledging our Love is the true motivator ... for our children's future and what we will be leaving for them... provides us the strength and determination to keep on keeping on standing up and fighting against all that is wrong and destructive in this government.

Thank You Very Much For This Explanation On Inequality and the "Setbacks" on the Wellfunctioning of Democracy in the USA. Worldwide Democracy is According to Measurements by Freedom House, USA and The Economist (Intelligence Unit) Regretfully ALREADY Since "2006 in Decline". A Big CONCERN, Hopefully It Will Soon Come to a TURN.

The one candid argument of mine is that we will not have an equality of opinions, ideas, approaches, etc. until we have an equality of military power. Would you be so kind, to ground your reply to my quote?

As an American voter, the part about Congress members spending half their time raising money for their campaigns pisses me off the most. If you read Article I of the Constitution *(I know, novel idea, huh?)* that deals with Congress it clearly states that the ONLY party those members are answerable to is *_their constituents._* Funny enough, it doesn’t say a *_damn_* thing about rich people, PACs or corporations but _strangely;_ Congress members seem to value *_THEIR OPINIONS_* over those of us without *_MONEY!_*

Is Power money? idk. Money = power certainly but is all power money? I doubt the commander climbing the rock would say that. And, even some with money lack real power - consider that big landowner in Wyoming, would you say she's all-powerful? If anything, to me this brief talk suggests that passion and fight represent power.

No we are not equal. We cannot be equal. We were created equal, yes, but after that all sorts of forces take hold in our lives which result in inequality, and inequality is a completely natural and organic condition in any society.... and it cannot be changed.

I've heard some of this guys talks but I think he's off the mark because politics change and you have to access and re-access all the time he thinks in terms of a poll which is only good for that time frame until the next one comes out. Reality isn't time stamped but constantly changes.

You'd be right...except the only thing that changes for the common man is the scenery. We're no longer in control as we've been moved to the right seat and handed a steering wheel to play with and pretend our vote still counts. WE either kick the big money to the curb, or they make us permanent passengers.

You are simply one of your own self described elitists with a different than current political agenda you are putting forth. I would like an apolitical objective discussion. When are you going to get real and out of your impossible idealism so any real needed changes can be made to our political and elections system equality? Remember there is no such thing as PERFECT, particularly to everyone's consensus. You confuse an ideal political system with your personal idealism on issues vs needs of the separate citizens. I dare you to create any "perfect" political system for everyone. If you can then instead of being arrogant on what is wrong, layout in particularity what will be right--perfectly right!!! I too have many problems with our system, particularly how it is currently being sabotaged and corrupted. It is the corruption of one party and those, such as yourself, that is the current problem & that is destroying politics. A method currently exists for problem-solving but even it is corrupted by one party, judges, and media. I anxiously await a responsive speech and reply. If you can cure human shortcomings and wrongdoing (illegal and dishonest behavior), which will exist regardless of your or anyone's system, tell us how. I have not heard, studied about nor seen any country that comes close to the USA and our abilities to make a consensus adjustment when given time to do so. Take a look at our history. The mountains we have overcome are testament proof unless you favor a change to Socialism etc. Even that change will only shift favoritism & priorities to our detriment. I definitely would not want you as our president!! (see what I mean) To be politically correct, I will commend your efforts to persuade and speak your mind, a right you have earned simply because you are an American and/or have been given the right to do so in the USA.

So basically you are doing the same as him. Ie: You freely speaking your mind, not proposing any solutions, just doing an exposure (a way poorer and much less consistent) analysis of what you perceive to be the problem (corruption of one party) but when he does it is something awful because he (according to you) rubs American democracy the wrong way? Self awareness much?

Is this another guy advocating for the end of the electoral college and turning instead to a popular vote system? Even in such a system there will always be winners (maybe the largest ethnic or interest group?)and losers (minorities, be it ethnic groups or whatever) I think the founders realized the implications of a pure popular vote system, hence the elecoral college. Granted, it needs tweaking and he is right about the corrupting influence of money and gerrymandering. A straight popular vote, however, will just lead to more inequality.
