In the absence of time of payment of Rs. 10,000, it will create the problem whether this should be discounted or compounded to calculate its value on the focal date for comparison if focal date is other than t=0. And if the focal date is taken as t=0 then Rs. 10,000 has to be discounted (to bring its value on focal date) in all cases, eg. if t happens to be 5 10, 0 etc. the discount factor will be used to bring it on the focal date (t=0) with power as -5, -10 and 0, and if focal date is t=7 (other than 0) issues of the compounding and discounting will arise, because t will be determined later on.
